SHATEA ~ WAITING
JAZZIS 2001 ~ ISRAEL ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1992 Released: 1992

JazzisFind albums on this label Records are proud to release the debut CD by the most sensational rock group in Israel in many years - ShateaFind albums by this artist. The members of Shatea are all Israeli Arabs living in Haifa, and they are the first rock group in Israel, which plays rock music with vocals in the Arabic language, a novelty which aroused an unprecedented interest in the media. Even before the CD was released, Shatea were interviewed by all the major Israeli newspapers and appeared at the most prestigious TV and Radio shows - a success never accomplished before by any other rock group in this country. The music of Shatea is based on the tradition of Progressive Rock of the 70´s and their models are groups like Pink FloydFind albums by this artist and Deep PurpleFind albums by this artist, but they have developed a highly individual style and sound, bringing the music right up to date. The skillful arrangements and beautiful compositions make this CD a great achievement in the history of rock music in this country. Safa´a AmmarFind albums by this artist is the first Arab female vocalist performing together with male musicians on an equal basis. Her strong, clear and electrifying voice is only one of the group´s many advantages. Her partners are all gifted musicians, and the instrumental parts on this CD are no less thrilling then the vocal ones. Klofa TotaryFind albums by this artist plays some great guitar licks and the complicated musical background is carefully executed by the keyboard players Kareem NusserFind albums by this artist and Sami KambouraFind albums by this artist, well supported by the bass pulsations by Raymond HaddadFind albums by this artist and rock-solid drumming by Samer AzarFind albums by this artist. This release proves, yet again, the importance of Jazzis Records as the leading force behind many artistic achievements in Israeli music. Our persistence to keep producing original Israeli jazz and rock recordings creates the only chance for this wonderful music to be recorded, released and distributed to many attentive music lovers worldwide. As the only independent record label in Israel we´re proud of our results, hoping for many more in the future. This CD contains five songs in Arabic, two in English and one instrumental. Very unique!

SHESHET ~ SHESHET (30TH ANNIVERSARY EXPANDED EDITION)
NMC (ISRAEL) 82366 (Barcode: 7290011507602) ~ ISRAEL ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1977 Released: 2007

Eponymous album by Israeli group SheshetFind albums by this artist led by Shem Tov LevyFind albums by this artist, who also wrote almost all the music, and including the best local musicians at the time. This Prog / Jazz-Rock outfit created a great blend of western, Latin and middle-eastern music, which sounds as fresh today as it did at the time of the recording. Lead vocals are by Yehudith RavitzFind albums by this artist, who later became a major Israeli star. The compositions are heavily influenced by Prog (Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist in particular) and the album ranks among Israel’s all time best albums. The beautiful new edition includes as a bonus the extra-rare (just a few copies of the original LP are known to be in existence) second album by Sheshet, never previously released on CD, which the group recorded as soundtrack of the Israeli film “The Stretcher March” (see Side note). The only vocal track on the second album is sung by no other than Gidi GovFind albums by this artist, who also played a leading role in the film. The reissue of this album is a major feast for the Israeli Prog discography.
Side Note: Following the 1973 Yom Kippur War, the Israeli society entered a period of major upheaval and a radical re-examination of its values and social / political perspectives. The pioneering and bold film “The Stretcher March” was the first of its kind to openly examine the moral and psychological difficulties faced by soldiers in the IDF, a subject that was a complete taboo beforehand. This film and later other similar films and books written / published in the late 1970’s were all a result of this fascinating period in Israel’s society formative years.

TRESPASS ~ MORNING LIGHTS
PRIVATE EDITION (Barcode: 7290010781256) ~ ISRAEL ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2004 - 2005 Released: 2006

2nd album by Israeli trio TrespassFind albums by this artist. The band achieved worldwide recognition after their debut album was released on the French MuseaFind albums on this label label in 2002 and was accepted warmly by Prog fans. Gil SteinFind albums by this artist, who plays a multitude of keyboard instruments and recorders and occasionally sings, leads the trio. He is also the main composer and on this album he composed two and co-composed another two tracks. The fifth track is the band’s adaptation of Vivaldi’s violin concerto in A minor. Listeners familiar with the band’s debut album will find this one quite different. Gone is the feverish, faster then light racing on the keyboards; the music is now firmly based on classical music, with frequent quotations reminiscent of Baroque Masters. The compositions are solid and very well developed, with many themes and tempo changes. The similarity to bands like NiceFind albums by this artist, RefugeeFind albums by this artist, TraceFind albums by this artist, etc. is obvious, especially due to the sound, which is (purposely I assume) very 70’s. I’m personally very happy to see the band fulfill the high hopes we all had and produce an album, which can easily compare (if not overshadow) to any other Prog album produced anywhere else in the world. This again strengthens the fact that something truly wonderful is happening on the Israeli scene since the beginning of the 21st Century with a long streak of impressive new albums being produced one after another.
