KEVIN AYERS ~ HYDE PARK FREE CONCERT 1970
REEL RECORDINGS 002 (Barcode: 641444015627) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2007

After leaving the Soft MachineFind albums by this artist (of which he was a founding member) and recording the debut solo album (Joy Of A ToyFind albums with this title), guitarist / singer / composer Kevin AyersFind albums by this artist formed the Whole WorldFind albums by this artist band to record his second album (Shooting At The MoonFind albums with this title) and support its release by touring. This live recording captures the performance of Ayers and his band at the legendary London’s Hyde Park free concert, which had on the bill the most famous bands of the time performing in front of a 100,000 strong public – a record attendance to a rock venue in UK up to that time. Pink FloydFind albums by this artist performed their Atom Heart MotherFind albums with this title suite for the first time at that concert. Ayers and his cahoots, including David BedfordFind albums by this artist on keyboards, Lol CoxhillFind albums by this artist on saxophones, Mike OldfieldFind albums by this artist on bass and Robert WyattFind albums by this artist on drums, storm through a bunch of Kevin’s song with vengeance, as appropriate for such eclectic gig, and the whole set is captured exactly as it happened – a true piece of rock history. Coxhill’s brilliant contributions were always my favorite part of that particular band. The sonic quality might not be perfect, but considering this was a “field recording” done 37 years ago – who gives a damn? Priceless stuff!

KEVIN AYERS ~ WHAT MORE CAN I SAY…
REEL RECORDINGS 009 (Barcode: 641444032228) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene

Recorded: 1970 - 1971 Released: 2008

Canterbury scene founder (or at least one of the founders) Kevin AyersFind albums by this artist reveals here a bunch of his private recordings (demos, outtakes, etc.) from the early days of his solo career (after leaving Soft MachineFind albums by this artist), recorded mostly by himself (vocals, guitar, piano) and all written by himself. A few regular cohorts (David BedfordFind albums by this artist – organ, Mike OldfieldFind albums by this artist – bass, Robert WyattFind albums by this artist – drums) give a helping hand on occasion, but mostly this is Ayers by himself, demonstrating his amazing songwriting abilities and a unique delivery. This is a superb document of the early 1970s music, but also of the social climate and the care-free approach to life that characterized the bohemian scene Ayers was so much a part of. "Portrait of an Artist as a young man" is a very suitable description and this is not only a historical document but also a delightful trip down the memory lane, back to times long gone and much missed. The dedicated Ayers fans will of course be delighted to listen to this material, and considering the fact that none of it was ever heard before this is a Canterbury Holy Grail in many respects. Wholeheartedly recommended!

ARIK BEN KALIFA / MOGADOR ~ VOICES OF ELI
PRIVATE EDITION ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2007

Israeli bassist / composer Arik Ben KalifaFind albums by this artist spent six years in the US studying upright bass with William BettesFind albums by this artist and electric bass with Stanley ClarkeFind albums by this artist while playing with local bands. Upon his return to Israel in 2004 Arik formed the MagadorFind albums by this artist quintet with his musical partner, guitarist Guy RamonFind albums by this artist and with three young and very talented musicians: Amiram GranotFind albums by this artist (saxophones & flute), Tomer MezamerFind albums by this artist (keyboards) and Stas ZilbermanFind albums by this artist (drums). The band recorded a demo album in 2004 and later this, their debut album, which to me is a major surprise, considering the fact that it is one of the best Fusion albums I’ve heard in a long time. The music, composed mostly by Arik (with a couple of tunes co-composed with Guy) is superbly melodic, incorporating the best Fusion traditions with subtle Middle-Eastern motifs, which is not surprising considering Arik’s cultural legacy - his Moroccan-born father was a traditional oud player. Each of the tunes on the album provides a great melodic basis for the improvisations by the band members and the album offers plenty of excellent solos. Driven by Arik’s pulsating bass lines, the music is full of joy and charm, a real listening pleasure. The sophisticated melodies and the brilliant performances turn this album into something that deserves to be heard and admired, as it is as good, if not better, as any other Fusion album recorded by world’s top players. Hearing stuff like this makes me proud to be an Israeli.

COMMON BOND ~ RHYTHM OF LIFE
PRIVATE EDITION ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2006

1st album by Israeli ensemble Common BondFind albums by this artist, founded and led by guitarist and composer Kobi ShefiFind albums by this artist. Although founded at the end of the 1990s, the nine-piece band took a long time to mature and develop. They recorded a demo album a few years back, but this is their formal debut release, and as it turns out it was worth waiting for. In many respects this is one of the finest albums ever recorded in this country and it encapsulates the capabilities of the phenomenal new generation of Israeli musicians. Kobi, who wrote most of the music and the spectacular arrangements on this album, is a seasoned player with solid Jazz background (he was a member of Harold RubinFind albums by this artist’s group ParparFind albums by this artist). Drummer Roni ZadikFind albums by this artist, who is another veteran musician, keeps the music incredibly tight, regardless of the complex rhythmic patterns. All the other players are slightly younger (late 20s / early 30s) with extensive musical education and performing experience. The surprise of the album is the 19 years old vocalist Marina Maximilian BluminFind albums by this artist, born in Ukraine and immigrated to Israel as a child. She is undoubtedly the most original and spectacular Israeli vocalist since Rimona FrancisFind albums by this artist 40 years ago. Her extraordinary technique, range and self-confidence could all be easily mistaken as belonging to a 40 years old veteran superstar. The band creates an incredible big sound, with intricate brass arrangements and jazzy solos, but the music combines (as the band’s name suggests) the best of Jazz, Fusion, Funk and World Music elements into an amalgam of rare beauty and spectacular effect. Think Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, Tower Of PowerFind albums by this artist and SantanaFind albums by this artist with a dash of Middle Eastern and Balkan melancholy, fronted by a diva. Absolutely stunning! Since the album was released, Common Bond performed extensively in many countries with enormous success and they are surely destined to go far. Unfortunately Marina left to follow her solo career (after capturing the entire Israeli public through her participation in a TV talent-discovery show), and was replaced by another very talented singer Anat Ben HamoFind albums by this artist. If you wish to explore the wonderful world of new Israeli music – this is the album to start with. You are in for a treat of your (musical) life.

BOB DOWNES / OPEN MUSIC ~ CROSSING BORDERS
REEL RECORDINGS 011 (Barcode: 676868177828) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1978 - 1979 Released: 2008

British flautist / saxophonist / composer Bob DownesFind albums by this artist and his Open MusicFind albums by this artist ensemble (a constantly changing group of musical cohorts) were always one of the most interesting acts on the British Jazz scene in the late 1960s / 1970s. Downes participated in many of the pivotal recording made at the time by other bandleaders, but in parallel always led his own ensemble which played the music he composed. His ability to combine melody and Free Improvisation into a unique amalgam was always his forte and his recordings are great examples of the limitless musical efforts, which are typical of the period. This release presents an album, previously unreleased, featuring compositions inspired by a 1973 South American tour, recorded several years later with a great cast of musicians: guitarist Brian GoddingFind albums by this artist, trombonist Paul RutherfordFind albums by this artist, bassists Barry GuyFind albums by this artist, Mark MeggidoFind albums by this artist and Paul BridgeFind albums by this artist and drummers Dennis SmithFind albums by this artist and John StevensFind albums by this artist – all of which are exemplary representatives of the British Jazz scene at its peak. Considering the fact that this music is previously unheard, it seems such a shame it laid hidden from our ears for so long, but as usual all is well that ends well, so here it is finally for us to savor. Downes´ fans need no encouragement to grab this album instantly, but British Jazz fans not familiar with his output should definitely investigate, especially in view of the fact that the melody lines and his amazing flute virtuosity make the improvised passages "easier on the ear" for less experienced listeners.

G. F. FITZ-GERALD / LOL COXHILL ~ ECHOES OF DUNEDEN
REEL RECORDINGS 003 (Barcode: 641444015528) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1975 Released: 2007

Scottish guitarist G. F. Fitz-GeraldFind albums by this artist is an avant-garde musician best known for his 1970 MouseproofFind albums with this title album. His activities span Psychedelic, Avant-Rock and Free Jazz. This album presents him in cooperation with one of the greatest British improvisers, saxophonist Lol CoxhillFind albums by this artist, performing a series of musical “conversations”. Recorded live at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and selected from hours of material, this is a most wonderful window into the intimate world of spontaneous music creation by two masters. Coxhill is at his best here, always lyrical and often strangely romantic, even at the very peak of heated improvisation. The interplay is telepathic and inspired. Not an easy listening, but a most rewarding intellectual experience. Intended for Improvised Music enthusiasts.

HUMPHREY`S SISPENCE ~ DICTIONARY OF THE SOUL PART 1
HAARMONIC TREE 01 (Barcode: 7891098010421) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2006

This is surely one of the most unusual and unexpected albums released in Israel. Humphrey’s Sispence are a trio consisting of Brazilian-born singer and lyricist Monica Estela and brothers Yossef (guitar and compositions) and Tamir (bass and production) Sviri. For the album they expanded the lineup to include several young Israeli jazz players, among them the excellent trumpeter Avishai Cohen (not to be mistaken for the other Avishai Cohen, who plays bass). Monica is quite a multi-talented lady with established credentials as a photographer, filmmaker and poet. The album is based on a poetry book she wrote, in which there is a poem for every letter in the alphabet and each poem includes (almost exclusively) words starting with that letter – quite clever really, but unfortunately for most of us all in Portuguese. The music is very different as well, a mixture of jazz, Brazilian jazz, lounge and acid jazz, but as usually labels are not adequate to describe it and listening is the only option. Monica’s expressive vocals are the focus of the music, which floats around them, creating an atmosphere of tension almost like a soundtrack for a thriller movie. All this is very unusual and strange at first, but gets under your skin and stays there. The younger generation of jazz fans will love this to bits; especially those exposed to modern European jazz. Since this album includes only the first half of the alphabet’s letters, the rest will appear on Part 2 – hopefully soon. This is an excellent example of how diverse the Israeli music scene is in the new Millenium. Warmly recommended!

ZAKIR HUSSAIN / USTAD AMJAD ALI KHAN ~ SAROD
MOMENT 1005 ~ INDIA ~ World Music & Folklore

AMG Review: The youngest son of sarod player Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan, Amjad Ali Khan has continued to expand on his father´s legacy. Performing as a soloist and in collaboration with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Charlie Byrd, Igor Frolav, Glenda Simpson, and Barry Mason, Khan has brought a global view to the sarod, a 25-stringed, violin-like, Indian instrument. Khan is famous for his elegant style and technique. After a lifetime of work on the instrument, he has breathed a new life to an ancient form.

ZAKIR HUSSAIN / USTAD SULTAN KHAN ~ SARANGI
MOMENT 1006 ~ INDIA ~ World Music & Folklore

AMG Review: A slow, lyrical performance of the sarangi expressing love and sadness begins Rag Bhupali, Rajasthani Folk Song in Rag Bhup Mand, one of the oldest and simplest of ragas, and the exposition develops into exciting virtuosic exchanges between Sultan Khan and the famous Zakir Hussain on tabla. Perhaps the nicest surprise this album offers is the warm, sweet Rajasthani folk song, which is alternately sung and then played on the sarangi, beautifully varied but never overdone by Khan and Hussain, who actually provide a decrescendo section at the end, instead of simply stopping.

ZAKIR HUSSAIN / USTAD ALLA RAKHA ~ TABLA DUET
MOMENT 1001 ~ INDIA ~ World Music & Folklore

AMG Review: Recorded live in Calcutta in January of 1991, Tabla Duet features the late Ustad Alla Rakha and his son, Ustad Zakir Hussain. Accompanied by Ramesh Misra on a sarangi — a bowed lute that has both melodic and sympathetic strings — this eminent duo develops innumerable variations within tintal, a 16-beat rhythmic cycle. For over an hour the pair establish themes, improvise upon them, and confidently venture out way beyond the usual limits of temporal terra firma. From there the father and son exchange improvisations, swell into perfectly coordinated cadences, and manifest a number of traditional classical compositions. Tabla Duet is not a CD for the regressive listener. Those who would rather passively absorb the banal beats of a typical pop band than actively listen to the development of sophisticated rhythmic dialogues should avoid this CD. This is not to say that Tabla Duet is only suitable for rhythm junkies and drum circle fanatics. In actuality, Tabla Duet is a CD for anyone who seeks out musics that reflect collaborations of the highest caliber.

KEN HYDER / TALISKER ~ DREAMING OF GLENISLA
REEL RECORDINGS 004 (Barcode: 641444015429) ~ UK ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1975 - 1976 Released: 2007

Scottish drummer / composer Ken HyderFind albums by this artist and his TaliskerFind albums by this artist ensemble were one of the most interesting groups on the UK Free Jazz scene in the mid-1970s. I recall hearing their performances several times at London’s typical jazz venues and those were always most enjoyable. As Hyder states in the liner notes for this reissue, he decided to go back to his Scottish / Celtic roots after playing for years American influenced music, while overlooking their own traditional music. This amalgam of Scottish roots and melodies with the powers of Jazz improvisation creates something completely new and quite surprising. The attempt to find the unifying elements of all music, regardless of its tradition or source is exemplified here beautifully. The band, an unusual quintet, with two horns and two bass players, includes Hyder on drums with Davie WebsterFind albums by this artist on alto sax, John RangecroftFind albums by this artist on tenor sax and clarinet, Lindsay CooperFind albums by this artist and Marc MeggidoFind albums by this artist on bass. The music is mostly composed by Hyder or arranged by him based on traditional motifs. This album captures a really unusual and often sadly forgotten moment of the splendid UK Jazz scene at that time and it’s really great to have it back. Most wholeheartedly recommended!

JEAN CLAUDE JONES ~ HOSTING MYSELF
KADIMA COLLECTIVE 08 ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2005 - 2006 Released: 2006

Jean Claude Jones is the leader and the driving force of the Kadima Collective, a group of Israeli musicians who practice free improvisations as their primary musical habitat. The Kadima Collective record label releases albums, which would have never seen the light of day in any commercial environment. This album is a perfect example of such a release. Jones recorded this album all by himself using only his bass and some electronic devices to create all the sounds. The music is all freely improvised of course and therefore completely adventitious, yet it makes perfect sense to a listener, who is ready to engage in the creative process with the Artist. The album includes only 3 tracks: The first and third tracks are excerpts of a live recording Jones made while the dancer Julyen Hamilton performed an improvised dance to his music. The second track (over 32 minutes long) is composed of 18 shorter episodes recorded in the studio over a period of several months. This is a bold and well-articulated statement by a seasoned and determined Artist, who remains restless and adventurous at all times. For listeners with positively opened ears only.

JEAN CLAUDE JONES ~ RECOMP
KADIMA COLLECTIVE 14 (Barcode: 634479745652) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1997 - 2007 Released: 2008

Israeli bassist and Improvised Music pioneer Jean Claude JonesFind albums by this artist revisits eleven musical pieces recorded live and in studio over a period of ten years, performing, what he calls recomposition of the pieces. In his own words: “As opposed to mere editing, recomp involves the deconstruction, subtraction, rearrangement, and reconstruction of the material. It not only changes the sequencing, but it radically affects the feeling and the flow of the music. It also changes the texture of the weave, the voice of the team, and the original intention, revealing new connections, transitions, and possibilities”. The pieces are duos and trios played with other Israeli Improvised Music musicians like Harold RubinFind albums by this artist (clarinet), Steve HorensteinFind albums by this artist (flute, bass clarinet & saxophone), Daniel HoffmanFind albums by this artist (violin) and others. One duet with world-famous Israeli bass player Avishai CohenFind albums by this artist is also included. As usual, this is very difficult music, suitable for enthusiasts of the genre, but also an extremely rewarding intellectual experience. It’s good to see some people still treating music as Art and not a commercial commodity.

His ECM album with Dave HollandFind albums by this artistMusic From Two BassesFind albums with this title” was the first bass duo recording (1971), which brings us to this superb duet. Excellently recorded by the French Radio, the music is a completely improvised set, full of beautiful conversations and exchanges between the players, who display almost telepathic contact. Full of deep feeling and lyricism, but always inspired by the fire and passion for the music, the duo performs some incredible music, which although demanding, is most enjoyable. It is a great example of how Improvised Music can stay being avant-garde in nature, but become mature and technically flawless. Highly recommended to lovers of acoustic bass and challenging musical experiences.

SHIMSHON MIEL ~ IT`S ME
PRIVATE EDITION ~ ISRAEL ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1997 - 2007 Released: 2007

Since the reissue in early 2007 of Shimshon MielFind albums by this artist’s legendary 1977 album Orchard Of The Whispering EmbersFind albums with this title (the rarest Israeli Prog / Psychedelic album originally pressed in 200 copies only), I’ve met him and listened to the music he created in the last 30 years. As Miel moved in time deep into the orthodox Jewish community, his contact with the local music scene was severed. Although Miel never released any albums since his legendary debut, he continues to play and create music all the time, recording it in his own home studio. I encouraged him to release some of this music, as I found it truly fascinating, and finally he succumbed. This album brings out the hidden treasures out in the open, for all of us to enjoy. Using an array of electric guitars and guitar synthesizers (no other instruments are used and everything is played by him) Miel forges some of the most interesting sound vistas I’ve heard in a long time. Although completely indescribable, the music mixes elements of Psychedelics, Jazz, Avant-Garde and Ambient music without any preconceptions or limitations. Completely unpredictable and deeply atmospheric the music flows beautifully keeping the listener in suspense at all times. Expect the unexpected is probably the only description one can propose to any potential listener, hoping that many will decide to plunge into the deep end of musical adventure. Considering the album is dedicated to John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, who had a deep influence on Miel’s approach to guitar playing, it is quite natural that McLaughlin’s followers will find many hooks into this music, but honestly any open-minded listener should have a feast with this stuff. Not easy, but deeply rewarding music, which is timeless and transcends genres and cultures. Wholeheartedly recommended.

HARRY MILLER / ISIPINGO ~ FULL STEAM AHEAD
REEL RECORDINGS 012 (Barcode: 676868177927) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1975 - 1977 Released: 2008

Harry MillerFind albums by this artist brought over from his native South Africa a whole universe of music, which he and several of his South African musical cohorts injected into the British Jazz scene at a time of its greatest glory, not only musically but also socially, when it opened its arms and embraced any worthy influence, be it from India, Middle East, Far East or any other part of the crumbling Empire. Harry was always one of the most revered Masters of the bass and the warm tone and full body of his instrument ornamented countless recordings made by British bandleaders in the 1970s. However, Harry´s heart was always warmest to the amalgam of Free Improvised Jazz based on South African roots. His performances with the Brotherhood Of BreathFind albums by this artist and with his own roots ensemble IsipingoFind albums by this artist are clear evidence of the fact. Sadly Isipingo recorded just one album and therefore this new release, which presents a set of wonderful (mostly studio) recordings, all previously unissued, is a true delight to every one of the many Harry´s fans around the globe. Made in cooperation with the Miller family label OgunFind albums on this label Records, run by his wife Hazel, this album is a heaven on earth in every respect – the music is delightful, the sound quality excellent and the historical value immeasurable. TALY NOY-MEIR ~ YOUR HEART IS YOUR ONLY HOME (EP)
PRIVATE EDITION (Barcode: 881034775023) ~ ISRAEL ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2011

This is the debut release by Israeli singer / songwriter Taly Noy-MeirFind albums by this artist. The EP contains five original songs, with English lyrics, which she sings accompanied by guitarist Amit YitzhakFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Adam PeriFind albums by this artist, cellist Maya BelsizmanFind albums by this artist, bassist Adam Ben-EzraFind albums by this artist and drummer Karen TeperbergFind albums by this artist. Considering the fact that I get dozens of new releases every week, most of which find their way to the waste basket almost immediately, the fact that this one passed my initial selection is already remarkable, but this is just the beginning of the story. The fact is that this EP is one of the best pieces of new Israeli music I´ve heard in a long while. Everything about it: the quality of the songs, the intelligent lyrics, the way Taly performs them, the excellent arrangements and formidable instrumental performances, production, sound and recording quality - all the above are simply superb. It is quite difficult to pinpoint Taly´s music exactly, as she combines genres quite freely. There are shades of indie Rock, some Country, a tinge of Jazz and other bits and pieces, but they work together perfectly, creating a unique and fresh musical experience, which is something quite rare these days. The music rocks, yet its romantic and heartfelt at the same time, and Taly´s warm and seductive voice is perfectly suited to this music. In short this is first class music, which makes you immediately ask for more, which I hope will follow soon in the form of a full album. In the liner notes Taly ask her fans to buy this EP, which will enable her to continue recording her music – all I can do is to ask everybody to join this effort, as she´s much to talented to be ignored!

OFRIN ~ RUST & VELVET
FA MUSIC 005 ~ ISRAEL ~ Classic Rock

Ofrin is Ofri Brin, a young and promising Israeli singer and Oded K.dar, a young and gifted Israeli composer. This is their debut album and they co-wrote the material. The album was recorded in Berlin (where they now reside) with Israeli and German musicians. When I first listened to this album I could hardly believe my ears – I have not heard such quality of music made by Israeli musicians in a very long time. The music is just breathtaking – dark and complex, yet splendidly melodic and fascinating. Ofri possesses an incredible sensuous deep voice, which she uses skillfully to match the mood of the music. Her vocal range is perhaps a little limited, but that does not limit her ability to express the lyrics with rare sensibility. She sings in English, without any trace of a foreign accent, which is very rare among Israeli vocalists. Having said all that, the forte of the album is definitely the music. It is mostly beyond classification, changing constantly between jazz, alternative rock, progressive rock and even contemporary classical. Some songs have intimate brass and string ensemble arrangements, which emphasize the mood perfectly and the general level of musicianship is excellent all the way. I only wish this album will be a huge success for the two young and gifted people, but unfortunately I must say (from a vast experience in these matters) that it is definitely much too good to be successful. I can hardly wait for their next album!

MIKE OSBORNE ~ FORCE OF NATURE
REEL RECORDINGS 006 (Barcode: 641444026128) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1980 - 1981 Released: 2008

British saxophone Giant Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist retired from active performing by the end of 1982 as a result of his mental illness, leaving the local Free Jazz scene with an enormous empty space. Although his playing is relatively well documented starting in the late 1960s, when he was an active participant in creating the British Jazz revolution / emancipation, and in the 1970s when he played with the most prestigious ensembles, but his last period before his untimely retirement remains almost completely undocumented. Therefore these recordings, dating from the early 1980s, shortly before he was to stop performing are priceless and of great historic importance. The two sessions presented here are both quartet recordings with Dave HoldsworthFind albums by this artist on trumpet and alternating bassists Marcio MattosFind albums by this artist / Paul BridgeFind albums by this artist and drummers Brian AbrahamsFind albums by this artist / Tony MarshFind albums by this artist. Osborne´s playing is fluid and passionate, presenting the absolute heights of improvisational artistry. Both quartets present the usual level of telepathic interplay present in Free Jazz situation, with all musicians performing brilliantly. Osborne died in 2007, leaving behind him a legacy, which proves beyond any doubt that he was a true Force of Nature. Brilliant stuff!

DON RENDELL / IAN CARR ~ LIVE AT THE UNION 1966
REEL RECORDINGS 016 (Barcode: 775020996229) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1966 Released: 2010

If one had to pick up just one British ensemble, which would epitomize the British Jazz in the 1960s and its momentous development and emancipation from the early American Jazz basics into a full fledged European Jazz extravaganza, the Don RendellFind albums by this artist / Ian CarrFind albums by this artist Quintet would probably fit the bill most appropriately. The quintet´s five superb albums stand out to this day as one of the genre´s finest recordings and therefore any additional recording capturing these magnificent players in action is a rare and precious jewel, especially in view of the fact that this one is beautifully recorded and sounds just perfect. The quintet includes also the extraordinary pianist / composer Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist, who wrote most of the quintet´s music, bassist Dave GreenFind albums by this artist and drummer Trevor TomkinsFind albums by this artist. On this particular recording Green plays only on the first two tracks (due to the fact that he had another gig the same evening) and is replaced for the rest of the duration by no other than Tony ReevesFind albums by this artist (New Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist, ColosseumFind albums by this artist, GreensladeFind albums by this artist, etc.). This is a rare and wonderful opportunity to hear Tony´s superb Jazz bass abilities. This is a beautiful gift to all British Jazz enthusiasts, especially in view of Ian´s sad departure. A must!

ARIEL SHIBOLET ~ UNTITLED (1959)
KADIMA COLLECTIVE 09 ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2006

This album brings together the Jerusalem based Kadima Collective member saxophonist Ariel Shibolet with four Bay Area Californians (Aurora Josephson – vocals, Jen Baker – trombone, Scott R. Looney – piano and Damon Smith – bass). The players got together one afternoon and performed the music captured here without any preparations in advance. “Natural, home-brewed, organic music” is what Shibolet calls it, and so it is. Of course the five players, being all free improvisers and familiar with the concept of spontaneity had no problem finding a common language creating music together. The result is quite surprising, presenting a wide range of musical concepts and interplay, all within the free jazz / contemporary improvised music vein. All track titles were given names of paintings by the great American artist Mark Rothko and the portraits of the players were drawn by Aurora – a nice touch pointing out the close relationship of different aspects of Art and Culture. Adventurous music for adventurous listeners.

ARIEL SHIBOLET / BETWEEN THE STRINGS TRIO ~ LIVE AT THE TEL AVIV MUSEUM
KADIMA COLLECTIVE 13 (Barcode: 634479391576) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2007

2nd album by Israeli saxophonist Ariel ShiboletFind albums by this artist, this time in cooperation with the Between The Strings TrioFind albums by this artist (Jean Claude JonesFind albums by this artist – bass, Daniel HoffmanFind albums by this artist – violin and Nori JacobyFind albums by this artist – viola), recorded live at the Tel Aviv Museum. The concert includes three parts, starting with a solo soprano saxophone performance by Ariel, continued by a piece by the string trio and concluded by a quartet performance by Ariel with the trio. Over 61 minutes of purely improvised music, challenging and difficult as always, but deeply rewarding to the disciples of the genre. Ariel’s playing is deeply rooted in the tradition of the late period John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, Steve LacyFind albums by this artist and Eric DolphyFind albums by this artist, based on complete control of the instrument, virtuosity and of course relentless passion. The balance between Ariel and the string trio, as well as their cooperative group improvisation is truly inspiring. Contrary to popular opinion improvised music is definitely still alive and kicking, and the fact that it still thrives here in Israel (although abandoned in other places) makes me especially proud, proving the multi-cultural openness of our society.

SOFT HEAP ~ AL DENTE
REEL RECORDINGS 008 (Barcode: 641444027927) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene

Recorded: 1978 Released: 2008

Soft HeapFind albums by this artist was a short-lived Canterbury super-group where members of Soft MachineFind albums by this artist (Hugh HopperFind albums by this artist – bass and Elton DeanFind albums by this artist – sax) met with pianist Alan GowenFind albums by this artist (GilgameshFind albums by this artist, National HealthFind albums by this artist) and drummer Pip PyleFind albums by this artist (GongFind albums by this artist, Hatfield And The NorthFind albums by this artist). They managed to record just one (eponymous) studio album and disbanded shortly afterwards, with each musician pursuing their own path. This wonderful album presents one of the very few live gigs the band played live in London and is of course a Canterbury dream comes true. The band had all the qualities that make the Canterbury scene so special; superb musicianship, great compositions and a free spirit atmosphere with a dash of typical British humor. For specialists – we can hear here a composition by Gowen, which was never previously available on record and the band´s name (second word) is an acronym of the band´s first names. Considering the fact that Gowen, Dean and Pyle are no longer with us (they passed away in 1981, 2006 and 2006 respectively) and Hopper is fighting leukemia at the time these lines are written, this is a tremendously important document of an era, which unfortunately is long time gone. A must for any Canterbury fan!

SPLINTERS ~ SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE
REEL RECORDINGS 013 (Barcode: 775020938328) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1972 Released: 2009

The Canadian Reel Recordings label does it again! Following a series of splendid British Jazz archival releases, which expose many previously unheard musical creations during the Golden Age of British Jazz, this addition to its catalogue is perhaps the most sensational and revealing. Obviously the feverish activity, that characterized this unprecedented period, produced a vast amount of groundbreaking music, which unfortunately was only partially captured on tape. Therefore unearthing another piece of that wonderful puzzle is always exciting and educational. The SplintersFind albums by this artist collective is truly unique in every sense, but the most striking trait of this ensemble is the meeting of generations, united by the inner urge to express their musical ideas as expressively and unrestrictedly as humanly possible. Three of the protagonists of this session, recorded live at the legendary 100 Club, London´s primary Jazz dungeon for many years, pianist Stan TraceyFind albums by this artist (b. 1926), drummer Phil SeamenFind albums by this artist (b. 1926) and saxophonist Tubby HayesFind albums by this artist (b. 1935) were already British Jazz legends at the time of this recording, with years of experience and established careers to their credit. All were immensely influential on the then growing up generation of the British New Wave of rebellious young players, who wished to emancipate the music they played from the restrictions of strict Jazz forms, patterns and rhythmical uniformity established since the genre´s conception and developed during its first half century in the USA. Tracey, Seamen and Hayes were the necessary missing link between the Jazz tradition and the gradual but revolutionary development that occurred in British Jazz from the mid-1960s on. Surprisingly, Tracey and Seamen, both older than Hayes, proved to be the more adventurous, shunning from nothing and keeping their sensitivity completely up to date. Tracey fully embraced Free Jazz and Improvised Music and Seamen was active not only in the Jazz area, but also took part in early Jazz-Rock, Rock and even early World-Jazz activities, mainly through his faithful pupil and protégé Ginger BakerFind albums by this artist. Hayes remained somewhat more "conventional", expanding his Bebop approach with some freedom, but remaining firmly within the established parameters. Perhaps the future might have proved differently, but Hayes died prematurely just a year after this music was recorded. The rest of the "crew" captured here: saxophonist Trevor WattsFind albums by this artist (b. 1939), who taped this music and was the initiator behind Splinters, trumpeter Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist (b. 1930), bassist Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist (b. 1937) and drummer John StevensFind albums by this artist (b. 1940), were the (not necessarily chronologically, but definitely spiritually) young Lions spearheading British Jazz into a new direction. The idea behind this session was to provide an open and most importantly completely free of any pre-conceptions environment for the musicians to express their ideas. As with much contemporary Jazz at the time, the idea of free flow and mutual respectful listening is the core of creation here. The music consists of two long (47 and 30 minutes) improvised pieces, with no strict melody lines, but full of very "melodic" playing, which makes perfect sense musically. This is group improvisation at its best, full of musical interplay and mutual inspiration respectful of each other´s "moment" and bearing at each particular instant. In many respects this is a classic "textbook" recording, which could be used as a perfect demonstration of what group improvisation really is. As someone must have said sometime: "you can´t plan lovemaking", this music, although unplanned, is a pure work of love. Beyond essential!

JOSEF SPRINZAK / JEAN CLAUDE JONES ~ THE WORLD IS ROUND
KADIMA COLLECTIVE 04 ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Both Sprinzak & Jones are members of the Kadima Collective - an umbrella organization of Israeli musicians formed to promote Free Improvised Music in Israel. Members originate from variety of music genres, i.e. classical , jazz & rock. Their work includes collaborations with poets and vocal artists. This album is an excellent example of such collaboration. Jones plays bass and electronics and Sprinzak delivers some amazing vocals, based on a story by Gertrude Stein. His artistic language is based on breaking words into syllables, using breathing techniques and extreme vocal production. The result is a kind of music played by the instrument of language. This is something for the more advaturous music lovers, avant-heads and people who enjoy a musical challenge.
