Miskiewicz was the groupīs second composer and contributed two of the five compositions present on this album in addition to the three compositions by the leader, Sendecki. Sun Ship was the first of the Polish ensembles, which tried to leave behind them the Jazz-Rock Fusion, which was the predominant genre in the 1970s and return to mainstream Jazz, with more advanced chord changed and extended improvisations, which they did extremely well. Sendeckiīs keyboard wizardry is plainly evident on this beautiful album, as are the highly developed skills as improvisers. In retrospect this is one of the most interesting Polish Jazz recordings of that turbulent period. Highly recommended!

SING SING PENELOPE / ANDRZEJ PRZYBIELSKI ~ STIRLI PEOPLE – IN JAZZGA
MONOTYPE 022 (Barcode: 5908310927084) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2008 Released: 2009

This phenomenal recording presents a somewhat unlikely cooperation between young Polish ensemble Sing Sing PenelopeFind albums by this artist and the dark prince of Polish Jazz avant-garde, genius trumpeter / composer Andrzej PrzybielskiFind albums by this artist (now sadly departed). Sing Sing Penelope, formed by Polish drummer / composer Rafal GorzyckiFind albums by this artist also includes brilliant trumpeter Wojciech JachnaFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Tomasz GlazikFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Daniel MackiewiczFind albums by this artist and bassist Patryk WeclawekFind albums by this artist. They recorded three albums since the mid-2000s, all of which are excellent, and this is their fourth release. Przybielski was a key figure on the Polish avant-garde scene since the 1960s, and his scarce, but mostly brilliant recorded legacy is a prime example of the Eastern-European Jazz at its most creative best. The music created by the young members of the ensemble and the veteran trumpeter is a wonderful surprise, completely unexpected not only due to the age and musical background differences but mainly because of the vibrancy and vitality of the result, which resembles the power and verve of the early electric Miles DavisFind albums by this artist ensembles. The sound is very modern and up to date, mostly up tempo and sometimes quite Rock oriented, but always within the Jazz aesthetic and always simply radiant. Of the seven composition presented on the album Przybielski is credited with three, another three are co-credited to him and the group and the last one is by the group. The most striking feature of the album is of course the double trumpet front line, which is simply phenomenal. Jachna already proved his ability as a player on several albums featuring his unique talents and playing alongside a genius such as Przybielski must have proven a unique inspiration, which is evident from the result. Przybielski himself simply plays beautifully all the way and this recording is definitely one of his best moments. As much as two saxophones lineups are very popular in Jazz, a two trumpets ones are almost inexistent, which is a great pity, as this recording proves beyond any doubt. But of course all the participants of this recording deserve to be praised, as everybody contributes towards the unprecedented success. Overall this is one of the strongest Polish Jazz albums recorded recently and a grand memorial to the talents of Andrzej Przybielski, who received almost no recognition before his untimely and tragic death. Definitely a must to every connoisseur of Polish and Eastern-European Jazz!

ANDRZEJ KURYLEWICZ ~ TRIO
POLSKIE RADIO 0226-7 (Barcode: 5901448112261) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2000 Released: 2007

The legendary Polish Jazz pianist / composer Andrzej KurylewiczFind albums by this artist is one of the godfathers of the great Polish Jazz movement, starting from the 1950s. Sadly his role is often almost forgotten and certainly much less appreciated that that of his counterpart pianist / composer Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist, who managed to achieve some international exposure and prominence. Kurylewicz is a formidable force and his skills as pianist / composer / arranger / conductor are truly admirable. He also composed music for cinema, theatre and TV as well and contemporary Classical music. Unfortunately his recorded legacy of Jazz performances is rather limited and therefore the outmost importance of this superb album, which documents his return to Jazz piano after several years of absence, with his brilliant trio with bassist Pawel PantaFind albums by this artist and drummer Cezary KonradFind albums by this artist. These absolutely stunning recordings present the trio playing a set of original compositions and standards, played with finesse and taste completely unmatched. Of course the age and experience of the veteran musician have a lot to do with this (he was almost 70 by the time of this recording) but the talent and above all his incredible feel for Jazz, melody and improvisation, which are simply beyond what most other musicians have to offer. In his own compositions Kurylewicz is deeply rooted in the Polish musical tradition, which incorporates folklore and Classical music. His interpretation is typically European; elegant, sophisticated, clever and moving and this music simply uplifts the listener to another plane. The album also includes several video clips taken during the recording sessions of this album, which are also a great pleasure to watch. In short this is a great example of Polish (and European) Jazz at its finest moments, which should be treasured by Jazz connoisseurs around the world. A must!

STRING CONNECTION ~ 2012
POLSKIE RADIO 1419 (Barcode: 5907812244194) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2011

Over 20 years after the Polish Jazz ensemble String ConnectionFind albums by this artist ceased to exist after several years of leading the local Jazz scene, here they are again, reunited, rejuvenated and recharged with new energies. Led by the violin virtuoso / composer Krzesimir DebskiFind albums by this artist, who founded the original group in 1981 and who was also responsible for group´s breakup due to his mounting commitments as a composer for film and contemporary Classical music, the group also includes original members: saxophonist Andrzej OlejniczakFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Janusz SkowronFind albums by this artist, bassist Krzysztof ScieranskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Krzysztof PrzybylowiczFind albums by this artist. Female vocalist Anna JurksztowiczFind albums by this artist guests on two tracks. The music was composed mostly by Debski (six of the eight tunes on the album) with Olejniczak and Scieranski contributing one composition each. All these players are of course masters of their trade and their performances are always top notch, as expected. The music covers a wide spectrum of compositions, from World Music influences to Fusion, with the typical Eastern-European awareness of somewhat quirky melody lines and rhythmic patterns. There are no surprises here or groundbreaking innovations, but a lot of excellent and enjoyable music. For Jazz violin connoisseurs this is a must of course, as Jazz albums with violin are unfortunately a rarity, especially those of such quality like this one. Recommended!

TORD GUSTAVSEN ~ THE WELL
ECM 2237 (Barcode: 602527858968) ~ NORWAY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2012

This is the 5th album on the prestigious ECMFind albums on this label label by Norwegian pianist / composer Tord GustavsenFind albums by this artist. His first three albums were recorded in a trio format, the fourth by an ensemble (quintet with a new bassist, saxophonist and female vocalist) and this album returns to the classic quartet format with saxophonist Tore BrunborgFind albums by this artist, bassist Mats EilertsenFind albums by this artist and drummer Jarle VespestadFind albums by this artist. The music, all composed by Gustavsen, is absolutely brilliant in its typical Nordic way; relaxed, romantic, lyrical and beautifully melodic. The quartet performs superbly, with the saxophonist often sounding like Jan GarbarekFind albums by this artist, and the rhythm session subtly fulfilling the blanks and silences in between. Although some listeners might find the Nordic music "cold", this is a complete nonsense, and careful listening will eventually disclose the passionate nature of this music, beneath the stern exterior. Absolutely brilliant stuff!

KINKS ~ THE KINKS ARE THE VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY (DELUXE EDITION)
SANCTUARY 602527046792 (Barcode: 602527046792) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1968 Released: 2004

This is the 6th album by The KinksFind albums by this artist, the seminal British Pop / Rock band led by brothers Ray DaviesFind albums by this artist (who wrote all their wonderful material and was definitely one of the greatest composers in British Rock) and Dave DaviesFind albums by this artist (who played the lead guitar for the band). The first lineup, which lasted for five years, included also bassist Pete QuaifeFind albums by this artist and drummer Mick AvoryFind albums by this artist. Similar to other great British Rock bands like The HolliesFind albums by this artist, The WhoFind albums by this artist and even The Rolling StonesFind albums by this artist, The Kinks were overshadowed by The BeatlesFind albums by this artist, this in retrospect is a great injustice, as they certainly were as good if not better than the Fab Four in every respect. This album presents the culmination point for the group, which developed a completely unique approach to writing music, which now included elements of Psychedelia and other influences. The lyrics were full of social commentary and concentrated on British society, history and way of life, often being quite sarcastic and critical. This is a full fledged concept album, as good as any of its revered contemporaries, but somehow was missed both by fans and critics at the time of its release and quickly forgotten. In retrospect it is an absolute milestone and an essential piece of Rock´s history. Always truthful to themselves and their fans, the Kinks wonderfully mixed raw energy and melodic sophistication, which lost nothing of its intrinsic power through the years. This new edition adds two whole CDs worth of bonus material, including both stereo and mono versions of the original album, non-album singles, EPs, alternate takes, outtakes, and other previously unreleased recordings. Absolutely brilliant stuff!

SONY 886978478320 (Barcode: 886978478320) ~ USA ~ Blues

Recorded: 1923 - 2004 Released: 2011

I usually donīt like collections of this sort, but honestly this one is quite exceptional. It was compiled by Sony MusicFind albums on this label for the French market by French Blues enthusiasts and one must raise the hat to those Frenchmen, they simply have more taste than most, especially Americans. The compilation consists of 25 remastered original albums, mini-sleeved, in a cardboard box. It covers the many faces and shapes of the Blues between 1920s and 2000s, proving not only the enormous versatility of the music, but beyond all the overwhelming influence Blues had on all other music genres between Jazz and Rock. The sources include not only the usual ColumbiaFind albums on this label vaults, but also the French VogueFind albums on this label label and several others, to give a comprehensive story of the genre. The albums are presented chronologically by the release date, which in some cases is not exactly parallel to the recording date, but overall the story of the Blues is presented in whole. LEONARD COHEN ~ THE COMPLETE STUDIO ALBUMS COLLECTION
SONY 886979617728 (Barcode: 886979617728) ~ CANADA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1967 - 2004 Released: 2011

America didnīt really need another Jewish Prophet… Zimmerman created enough mayhem as it was, protesting out loud, corrupting the youth and what have you. Just look what happened: the god-fearing American Folk music went electric and turned into Rock, to be followed by the Summer Of Love and later Woodstock! Sodom and Gomorrah! And on top of all this another Jewish poet / singer / songwriter arrives from the north and adds oil to the fire… The connection between Leonard CohenFind albums by this artist and Bob DylanFind albums by this artist is obvious; they both deal often with the same subject matter and similar modus operandi, cleverly crafting revolutionary ideology and dressing it up with music. In many respects Cohen arrived on the scene just after Dylan peaked, and whereas Dylan never managed to recreate the golden era of his youth, Cohen aged well, continuously producing new albums, which were always up to date, both musically and intellectually. This collected studio recordings are a staggering monument presenting Cohenīs talent. Everybody knows some of his songs, which in time became timeless anthems, but listening to these eleven albums chronologically and in full is a true mind-blowing experience. He is a Prophet, a Sage and a great Artist indeed and what is amazing is the simplicity and honesty of his artistic way, devoid of any trickery (studio or otherwise), with minimal orchestration and shunning unnecessary camouflage, just straight to the point riding on the strength of his expressive vocals and heartfelt melodies. In retrospect Cohen is a symbol of minimalism at its most effective. This box is a capsule of good taste, healthy mind and aesthetic symbolism of a time, none of which are to be found today anywhere. An absolute must and an essential piece of what we (still) call Culture, which is disappearing as these words are being written…

EVIATAR BANAI ~ EVIATAR BANAI (15TH ANNIVERSARY EXPANDED EDITION)
HED ARZI 64999 (Barcode: 7293372499999) ~ ISRAEL ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1996 - 1997 Released: 2012

This beautiful new edition of Eviatar BanaiFind albums by this artist´s eponymous debut album pays tribute to this excellent singer / songwriter, who took the local music scene by complete surprise when the album was initially released. Introvert and densely convoluted, with strong sexual imagery and paranoid horror metaphors his texts were shocking and provoking, but expressed well the fall of conventions which ruled over older generation and were viewed by his generation as hypocritical, ridiculous or simply stupid. In complete contrast his music, delicate as butterfly wings, works in perfect, but somewhat deviant harmony with the text, creating a completely unique style, which Eviatar perfected. It´s truly surprising to realize that this album was released 15 years ago – to me it seems just like yesterday. This new edition adds a whole CD of early demo versions of the songs included on the album, including two songs, which eventually were not included on the album, as well as a DVD, which presents the chapter in a documentary about the milestone Israel albums, dedicated to this particular album. This is a beautiful package which is a must to all lovers of Israeli music.

ASSAF KEHATI ~ FLOWERS AND OTHER STORIES
PRIVATE EDITION (Barcode: 884501471824) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2011

This is the 2nd album by Israeli (currently resident in the US) Jazz guitarist / composer Assaf KehatiFind albums by this artist. Following his studies at the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in Israel Assaf received a scholarship and continued his studies at the New England Conservatory in Boston, where he was immediately noticed for his talents as a player. In time he performed with many distinguished Jazz players and later founded his own quartet with saxophonist Alon FarberFind albums by this artist, bassist Daniel SapirFind albums by this artist and drummer Udi ShlomoFind albums by this artist, all three being also Israeli Jazz musicians. The album contains seven original compositions, which are all beautifully crafted. In fact it seems that his strength as a composer is as significant as his performing skills, a phenomenon which characterizes most young Israel Jazz players, who are part of a quite noticeable tribe occupying a respected position on the contemporary US scene, of which Assaf is now a proud member. The music is wonderfully versatile, with changing moods and tempi, but always highly melodic. Assaf plays some sweet licks and overall his approach to Jazz guitar is well based in tradition and at the same time very modern. He manages to stay away from the dreaded Fusion doodling, which is the plague of many contemporary players. All three members of his quartet give him full and sympathetic support and Alonīs solos are all excellent examples of intelligent and passionate modern Jazz. The rhythm section supports the two soloists formidably, and above all not intrusively, always there when needed most. Overall this is album is a real delight from start to finish, and should be able to defend itself even from the sternest critics. We can only hope for many more albums by Assaf in the future, assuming they will be all as good as this one. Congratulations are in order!

DOORS ~ LIVE AT THE MATRIX `67
RHINO 081227988487 (Barcode: 081227988487) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1967 Released: 2008

This is finally the formal release of the legendary Matrix tapes capturing the DoorsFind albums by this artist live at the very early days of their career. Just a few months after their first album was released and before "Light My Fire" fired up the charts, they were just one more band playing the California coastal cities. But of course they were definitely not just "one more band" as these, far from perfect tapes, prove instantly. The Doors were the best American Rock band ever, and although they were still perfecting their act then and experimenting with it (something they never stopped to do) the visionary qualities are already there if you listen well enough. Including material from their first album, a few new songs from the second album (still not recorded at the time), and a lot of Blues, which all Doors members loved, to fill the blanks, this show is a time capsule preserving everything the Summer Of Love (although it was only early spring) was all about – intellectual freedom, total devotion to oneīs art and complete disregard of authority, establishment and commerciality. i.e. the American Way Of Life. Jim MorrisonFind albums by this artist is the actor and the poet, with music serving as the catalyst for his introvert sufferings, Ray ManzarekFind albums by this artist, with his miserable thin-sounding organ, manages to make magic with the keys on his keyboard, Robby KriegerFind albums by this artist plays the Blues, always, regardless what the tune is and John DensmoreFind albums by this artist keeps the whole lame wheelbarrow moving forward – towards Nirvana. This is, as said earlier, a time capsule, which proves that at that time even a seemingly uneventful gig at a dinky San Francisco club by a struggling young band was infinitely better that anything played in the 21st Century. Go figure?

DEREK AND THE DOMINOS ~ LAYLA AND OTHER ASSORTED LOVE SONGS (DELUXE EDITION)
POLYDOR 600753314296 (Barcode: 600753314296) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1970 - 1971 Released: 2011

I guess thereīs not much left to say about this iconic album, considering the oceans of words already spilled on the subject. Post CreamFind albums by this artist / Blind FaithFind albums by this artist guitarist / vocalist Eric ClaptonFind albums by this artist moved over the pond and embraced American music: Blues (which was always his primary love), Country and Rock And Roll. Playing with American musicians Clapton seemingly changed his approach from the highly improvisational, endless and incredibly loud solos he used to play with Cream, to concise, almost simplistic brief solo moments, lots of vocals and lots of melody. For some it was a "new" Clapton, but for people with keen hearing Clapton was still playing the Blues, same as he did in the YardbirdsFind albums by this artist years ago and same as he did with Cream, slightly disguised / Americanized but basically honest and consistent with his past. And then of course the presence of Duane AllmanFind albums by this artist, the legendary guitar hero of the Allman BrothersFind albums by this artist and Southern Rock in general, which turns this album into what it truly is – a conversation between two Giants, which in Rock happens only once in a blue moon. So what do we have here: nice but not sensational music, mostly Blues based, superb guitar playing, great support from a great rhythm section and a lot of Magic, which turns this into one of the greatest Rock albums of all times. Of course it could have never been repeated and even if Duane did not meet his Maker soon after, this kind of miracle happens only once, so letīs be happy with what we have. The additional CD includes some great previously unreleased material, some live / some studio, including the sessions for the second, never finished album and other goodies. Did I say essential? Hell YES!

His amazing technique, regardless if he plays the acoustic piano or an array of synthesizers, as well as his brilliant writing, again regardless if in an acoustic Jazz setting, hardwired Fusion or Ambient music, are always first rate and listening to his albums is quite an experience. This wonderful album presents Kaltenecker as a solo performer, playing both pre-composed pieces and freely improvised ones, using an electronic synthesizer programmed to emulate instruments like clavichord, harpsichord and guitar. ARTHUR BROWN ~ CHISHOLM IN MY BOSOM
ESOTERIC 2299 (Barcode: 5013929739925) ~ UK ~ Pop & Rock

Recorded: 1977 Released: 2011

This little know album by the great British maverick Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist was completely ignored at the time of its release, but in retrospect it shows how versatile and brilliant Brown was with everything he touched. Recorded on a tight budget, Brown was able to collect around him some excellent musicians, including old friend from The Crazy World Of Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Vincent CraneFind albums by this artist and ex-Kingdom ComeFind albums by this artist guitarist Andrew DalbyFind albums by this artist. Brown wrote all but two songs on this album (including the 23 minutes long title track), with Dalby contributing one and a new version of "I Put A Spell On You", which was also featured on his debut album. Brownīs vocal performances are, as usual, unparalleled and they always work for me. The music is perhaps less Prog oriented that the earlier solo and Kingdom Come material, but still is definitely worth listening to, especially if Brownīs enchanting voice and his unique dramatics are your cup of tea. A must to all Arthur Brown Fans!

MATEUSZ SMOCZYNSKI ~ EXPRESSIONS
TMP 002 (Barcode: 5905912553239) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2007 Released: 2008

This is the 2nd album as a leader by the young Polish Jazz violinist / composer Mateusz SmoczynskiFind albums by this artist. Recorded with a superb quintet, which includes his brother Jan SmoczynskiFind albums by this artist on piano, guitarist Konrad ZemlerFind albums by this artist, bassist Wojciech PulcynFind albums by this artist and drummer Lukasz ZytaFind albums by this artist, the album presents his talent and obvious virtuosity to the fullest extent. Of the ten compositions included on the album Jan contributed four, Mateusz one, Wojciech another four and the last is credited to all quintet members. The music is modern Jazz, which has solid roots in Jazz mainstream, but is open to glimpses of Free, which is not surprising since Mateusz points out John ColtraneFind albums by this artist as a major influence. Of course he also continues the Polish Jazz violin tradition, naming Zbigniew SeifertFind albums by this artist (who in turn was also strongly influenced by Coltrane) as another direct influence. However, attentive listening to his brilliant solos brings also memories of the other great Polish violinist, like Michal UrbaniakFind albums by this artist and Krzesimir DebskiFind albums by this artist and of course the French giant Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist. Since recording this album, Mateusz recorded another superb album (again with his brother Jan) in a trio setting ("Simultaneous AbstractionsFind albums with this title"), participated in a Zbigniew Seifert tribute album ("A Tribute To Zbigniew SeifertFind albums with this title") and recorded with the Atom String QuartetFind albums by this artist. All these projects are impeccable pieces of intelligent, rewarding and highly aesthetic music and it seems that Mateusz is heading to the very top of the local (and perhaps also international) scene. The album was recorded in the "Tokarnia" recording studio owned by the Smoczynski brothers, and engineered and mastered by Jan. From several other Polish Jazz recordings Iīve heard, which were recorded there, one can hear that this is probably the best recording studio in the country and Jan (in addition to his musical abilities) as a great sound engineer. Well, itīs always a pleasure to give credit, where credit is due, as in this case. Altogether this is brilliant piece of music, which any Jazz connoisseur anywhere should cherish. Most warmly recommended!

VOCALION 8482 (Barcode: 765387848224) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1965 - 1966 Released: 2011

During the 1964 concerts in UK by the Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist Band, saxophonist Paul GonsalvesFind albums by this artist was taken ill immediately prior to the band´s opening concert. He was promptly, but without any warning, replaced by the legendary local saxophone hero, Tubby HayesFind albums by this artist, who filled the void superbly. This incident led to a friendship between the two players, which led to the recording reissued herein. Gonsalves and Hayes exchange licks like there´s no tomorrow, leading a nonet consisting of excellent British musicians, some of which were the members of Hayes´ band at the time. The great pianist Stan TraceyFind albums by this artist was also drafted to the ranks. The music is simply divine, swinging like mad and the performances are truly stellar. A true meeting of the Giants! This reissue also includes an album by the Johnny ScottFind albums by this artist Orchestra, which consists of the leading Jazz players on the UK scene at the time. Recorded: 1966 - 1968 Released: 2011

British pianist / composer John CameronFind albums by this artist was one of the great mavericks on the local Jazz scene in the 1960s, when he was still performing himself. Later on Cameron concentrated on his work as a composer, arranger, bandleader contributing numerous film soundtracks, musicals, etc. This reissue brings to life two rare 1960s albums. He is accompanied by four excellent musicians: saxophonists Ronnie RossFind albums by this artist and Art EllefsonFind albums by this artist, bassist Spike HeatleyFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony CarrFind albums by this artist. The second features an orchestra led by Cameron performing a set of Pop / Rock songs arranged by him, which is a typical easy-listening recording, but of high quality due to the superb Jazzy arrangements. VOCALION 8479 (Barcode: 765387847920) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1965 - 1966 Released: 2011

This exquisite reissue brings to life two extremely rare mid-1960s quartet recordings by the great British saxophonist Dick MorrisseyFind albums by this artist, one of the great representatives of the British Jazz scene at its peak in the 1960s / 1970s. Earning respect and admiration as a hard bop player (as documented on these two albums) Morrissey later formed the fantastic early Jazz-Rock ensemble IfFind albums by this artist and after it disbanded he formed the Morrissey-Mullen BandFind albums by this artist (with guitarist Jim MullenFind albums by this artist), which lasted for almost two decades as one of the best and most stable British bands. Sadly Morrissey died in 2000, losing his battle with cancer. A brilliant player with enormous sensitivity and beautiful tone, Morrissey remains a symbol of the times, when music sounded better and girls looked prettier (to old farts like myself of course). This album is sweet and mellow, with superb performance by pianist Harry SouthFind albums by this artist, who also contributed several original compositions, bassist Phil BatesFind albums by this artist and drummers Bill EydenFind albums by this artist (first album) and the legend Phil SeamenFind albums by this artist (second album). Disregarding the element of nostalgia, this is a damn great Jazz album, which swings like mad and makes life worth living. The recording quality (and the superb remastering by Michael J. SING SING PENELOPE ~ WE REMEMBER KRZESELKO
ELECTRIC EYE 003 (Barcode: 5905912552874) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 2006 - 2007 Released: 2008

This is the 3rd album by excellent Polish ensemble Sing Sing PenelopeFind albums by this artist, led by drummer / composer Rafal GorzyckiFind albums by this artist, one of the most versatile and diligent Polish musicians, who also created and leads other ensembles, like Ecstasy ProjectFind albums by this artist. Gorzycki incorporates Jazz tradition with contemporary Classical music, Avant-garde, Rock, Punk and a myriad of other genres and sub-genres, completely ignoring conventions, like many of his Polish contemporaries on the off-centre music scene. His recording legacy in the last decade is quite prolific, presenting many quite contrasting, but always intriguing musical vistas. This album is definitely one of the most interesting of his recordings, and one of the best albums coming out of Poland in the first decade of the 21st Century. On this album the ensemble includes trumpeter Wojciech JachnaFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Tomasz GlazikFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Daniel MackiewiczFind albums by this artist and bassist Patryk WeclawekFind albums by this artist. Violinist Sebastian GruchotFind albums by this artist guests on four tracks. The music, all original of course, is a stunning amalgam of Modern Jazz, Avant-Rock, RIO, contemporary Classical; in short completely beyond classification. Somehow all this makes perfect sense musically and leaves the innocent listener completely stunned. The strange thing is that this music might appeal to Jazz and Rock (especially Progressive Rock) audiences with equal might, but certainly itīs extremely unlikely someone might stay indifferent to it. In short this is a blast of an album, which took me by complete surprise and made me return to it several time already. As to the albumīs title, I have no idea what the ensemble really meant, even after watching the short video included on the album, but my guess would be that itīs a pun on the many Polish Jazz albums dedicated to the memory of Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist, including the famous "We`ll Remember KomedaFind albums with this title" album? In any case this album is an absolute must!

MUZA 1062 (Barcode: 5907783420627) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1980 Released: 2007

This is an excellent album by a Polish Jazz quintet, led by veteran drummer Kazimierz JonkiszFind albums by this artist (ex-Zbigniew NamyslowskiFind albums by this artist quintet). The quintetīs two soloists are: the young brilliant violinist Krzesimir DebskiFind albums by this artist (shortly before he formed his own group String ConnectionFind albums by this artist, which would dominate the Polish scene in the first half of the 1980s) and saxophonist Andrzej OlejniczakFind albums by this artist, who fronted the most important Polish groups in the 1970s like Extra BallFind albums by this artist and Sun ShipFind albums by this artist. They are joined by pianist Janusz SkowronFind albums by this artist (also future member of String Connection and later for many years with Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist) and a young bassist Andrzej LukasikFind albums by this artist. Of the six tracks on the album, five were composed by Debski, who already at that time was a most promising composer in addition to his virtuoso violin performances. Packed with talent and great music, this is a superb example of modern Polish Jazz at its best and one of the strongest albums in the legendary Polish Jazz series. The harmonizing between the violin and soprano saxophone creates an unbelievable sound, which has very few parallels on record. This is a must to all Polish Jazz lovers and anybody interested in European Jazz in general.

TOMASZ STANKO ~ ROBERTO ZUCCO
POLONIA 059 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1995 Released: 1996

This is a relatively little known brilliant album by Polish virtuoso trumpeter / composer Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist, presenting one of the numerous soundtracks Stanko created for stage and cinema. This soundtrack was used for the Polish production of the theatre play "Roberto Zucco" by Bernard-Marie Koltés, based on the life of infamous Italian serial killer Roberto Succo. The music, which as usual with Stankoīs work, stands alone perfectly when removed from the stage context, consists of sixteen relatively short pieces performed by a quintet, quartet or on solo trumpet. Thirteen of these pieces are composed by Stanko and the remaining three are variations on the famous standard "Blue Velvet", of which two include vocal parts by singer Dorota MiskiewiczFind albums by this artist. This is an ultra rare opportunity to hear Stanko performing a standard, which he almost never does. Other players include pianist Andrzej JagodzinskiFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Janusz SkowronFind albums by this artist, bassist Slawomir KurkiewiczFind albums by this artist, drummer Michal MiskiewiczFind albums by this artist and percussionist Zbigniew BarysiakFind albums by this artist. KALTENECKER TRIO ~ WINTER`S TALE
PERIFERIC 215 (Barcode: 5998272708715) ~ HUNGARY ~ Jazz

Absolutely brilliant album by Hungarian Kaltenecker TrioFind albums by this artist, led by pianist Zsolt KalteneckerFind albums by this artist with bassist Viktor HarsFind albums by this artist and drummer Gergo BorlaiFind albums by this artist. The trio performs eleven original pieces, nine of which are composed by the pianist and one each by the other trio members. The music is absolutely brilliant from start to end and although completely within the mainstream tradition it manages to keep the listener at his toes continuously, which is quite a challenge. Kaltenecker has a great sense of melody and his technically brilliant piano performance simply sparks. The rhythm section gives the pianist a formidable support throughout, always right there where they are most needed. FERENC TORMA ~ I CRY OUT IN THE WILDERNESS
PERIFERIC 213 (Barcode: 5998272708678) ~ HUNGARY ~ Progressive Rock

This is a brilliant debut album by After CryingFind albums by this artist guitarist Ferenc TormaFind albums by this artist, a monumental concept album based on the life of John the Baptist. As usual with musicians belonging to the After Crying clique, we are talking about a full-fledged, almost symphonic scale work with rich orchestral arrangements, choir and a strong Classical Music influence. The list of participants includes twenty musicians, who play a plethora of instruments and sing either lead or chorus lines. Some Prog enthusiasts might find this music slightly "too serious" for their liking, but honestly this is Prog at its very best: intelligent, musical and challenging, with no clichés and boring repetitions. Admittedly a serious listening is definitely required in order to fully appreciate this beautiful piece of music, but the intellectual and aesthetic pleasure it bestows upon the listener in truly wonderful. This is the 4th and last album by the marvelous Polish Prog band AbraxasFind albums by this artist, which was definitely the greatest pioneer of the Prog renaissance in the 1990s in their country. Formed and led by the superb vocalist and charismatic leader Adam LassaFind albums by this artist, the band on this album also included guitarist Szymon BrzezinskiFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Marcin BlaszczykFind albums by this artist, bassist Rafal RatajczakFind albums by this artist, drummer Mikolaj MatyskaFind albums by this artist and second (acoustic) guitarist Lukasz SwiechFind albums by this artist. A couple of female backing singers also participate. The concert captured herein was recorded in memory of the Polish radio broadcaster Tomasz BeksinskiFind albums by this artist, perhaps the most significant radio personality in Poland at the time, who promoted exceptional music, including of course the music of Abraxas. His suicide (on Christmas Eve 1999) was a great blow to the many fans, who bestowed his radio programs a cult following. The highly emotional atmosphere of this special concert obviously influenced the musicians tremendously and the performance captured here is absolutely electrifying. The music of Abraxas is highly imaginative and although well set in the Prog tradition, it is completely original. It manages to avoid the triviality and repetitiousness of most Neo Prog and in retrospect remains one of Polandīs greatest achievement in Rock in general and Prog in particular. Even for people not familiar with the Polish language, this is one hell of a Prog album, almost 80 minutes of unadulterated straight in the gut superb Prog. The recording quality of this live music is one of the best Iīve ever encountered and the gold plated CD reproduces the music wonderfully. An absolute must for any serious Prog fan, anywhere on this planet.

SIMPLE ACOUSTIC TRIO ~ LULLABY FOR ROSEMARY
NOT TWO 727 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1995 - 2001 Released: 2001

This is a reissue of the debut album, originally entitled "KomedaFind albums with this title", by the superb Polish Jazz trio called Simple Acoustic TrioFind albums by this artist, which consists of pianist Marcin WasilewskiFind albums by this artist, bassist Slawomir KurkiewiczFind albums by this artist and drummer Michal MiskiewiczFind albums by this artist. This edition includes a bonus track not present on the original release, which is a live recording at the Polish Radio. In retrospect recording a debut album with Komedaīs music might have been slightly overreaching, since Komedaīs intricate compositions require sensitivity and experience well beyond the age of these musician at the time this album was recorded. Nevertheless they stood up to the challenge admirably, which proved that they were surely not "another" piano trio, but a formidable unit destined for greatness, which of course did materialize later. The bonus track gives a nice point of reference between the original music recorded six years earlier and the trioīs abilities at a later stage. ZBIGNIEW NAMYSLOWSKI ~ ASSYMETRY
PRIVATE EDITION ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2006

This is a brilliant album by veteran Polish saxophonist / composer Zbigniew NamyslowskiFind albums by this artist, one of the Founding Fathers of modern Polish Jazz active on the scene since the late 1950s. First as a member of the legendary Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist ensemble and later as a leader, Namyslowski was always a superb musician and an intriguing composer. His early work was often characterized by incorporating Polish folklore motifs into his compositions, which was highly unusual at the time in US or Western Europe, but relatively common behind the Iron Curtain. This amazing album, as the (slightly twisted) title suggests, is all about odd meters, you know all those 7/4, 5/4, 7/8 and other crazy rhythmic patterns that only highly skilled musicians are able to play correctly. As much as they are a nightmare to play, they are surely a wonder to listen to and enjoy and this albums offers nine lengthy tunes, one better that the other. Performed by a brilliant quintet: trombonist Jacek NamyslowskiFind albums by this artist (yes the next generation), pianist Slawek JaskulkeFind albums by this artist, bassist Michal BaranskiFind albums by this artist and drummers Grzegorz GrzybFind albums by this artist and Pawel DobrowolskiFind albums by this artist (on two tracks only), the music is simply divine, clever and enjoyable, all at the same time, which of course id pretty rare. CUSTOM TRIO / ANDRZEJ PRZYBIELSKI ~ FREE BOP
POLONIA 226 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1999 Released: 2000

This is probably the best album recorded by the recently deceased Polish trumpet virtuoso / composer Andrzej PrzybielskiFind albums by this artist, who remains largely unknown to most Jazz aficionados even in his native country. An eccentric and outsider, Przybielski was blessed with an incredible talent, which unfortunately was recognized only by very few connoisseurs. This studio recording, obviously well planned and relaxed, allows the great trumpeter to relax fully and play his heart out to the fullest, accompanied by excellent musicians worthy of his company, which are called Custom TrioFind albums by this artist. The trio consists of saxophonist Krzysztof KapelFind albums by this artist and the Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist: bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej Brat OlesFind albums by this artist – Polandīs Free Jazz most notable rhythm section. Together as a quartet they perform nine original compositions, five of which were composed by Przybielski and the remaining four by B.B. Oles. The performances are absolutely stellar and the album is one of the best Polish (and definitely not only Polish) Jazz albums ever recorded. As much as that sounds overblown, if you can listen to this music, youīll be instantly convinced. Any other player placed opposite (or side by side) a genius like Przybielski is in a great danger of appearing pale. Luckily Kapel is capably to blow like only a few can, matching everything that Przybielski plays with a vengeance. This is simply unbelievable music, which stands easily opposite such legendary sessions as the early Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist with Don CherryFind albums by this artist. In short this is essential Jazz, which can only be played by a very small group of exceptionally gifted players, which is definitely the case here. Brilliant!

Recorded just a few months after their brilliant debut album "KomedaFind albums with this title", dedicated to the music of the Godfather of Polish Jazz, pianist / composer Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist, this album is quite different and features the trioīs leader as the main composer in addition to his duties as the focal soloist. Wasilewski composed six of the nine compositions present on this album, Kurkiewicz added one of his own and the other two originate outside the trio, with the title tune being by Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist and an additional one by Carla BleyFind albums by this artist. Playing their own music allows the trio to stretch out and dare, much more so that on the debut. Of course Komedaīs music can be intimidation and even plain scary to every Polish Jazz musician, in view of Komedaīs legendary status, especially to such young musicians as the trio members at the time of recording the debut. But here they are, free of any (psychological or other) apprehensions, and the music surely indicates that. Of course these musicians are extremely talented and carry the "spark" of Jazz in their soul / heart, so anything they play sounds simply wonderful, even if the youthful energies are sometimes just a bit over the top. Of course a few years later the trio will receive a great lesson in Jazz from their Mentor Tomasz Stanko, with whom they were destined to play and record, a fact that at the time of this recording could only be a dream. But dreams do come true sometimes. In retrospect this is an incredible album by any standard, which (all things considered) withstands the test of time flawlessly and serves as a proof to the fact that the 1990 were not all a loss after all. An absolute must to Polish Jazz fans, piano trio fans and anybody with a pair of clean ears!

TOMASZ STANKO ~ LIVE AT THE MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL 1987
POLONIA 254 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1987 Released: 2000

This live recording at the Montreux Jazz Festival is the last of the glorious 1980s albums by the polish trumpet virtuoso / composer Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist and his FreelectronicFind albums by this artist ensemble, here consisting of keyboardists Janusz SkowronFind albums by this artist and Tadeusz SudnikFind albums by this artist and bassist Witold SzczurekFind albums by this artist. Stanko is in top form and in a great mood, which is evident by the happy atmosphere captured herein. His trumpet soars to incredible heights and the brilliant improvisations chase one another. In retrospect this is a perfect moment captured for posterity, just before the ever-changing Stanko would embark on yet another musical journey with the onset of the 1990s. The 1980s Stankoīs Jazz-Rock period was about to be abandoned and replaced by a return to the Jazz tradition and the new (again) Stanko, which would capture worldwide audiences with his ECMFind albums on this label recordings. But the 1980s period firmly remains as one of Stankoīs most productive and expressive periods and this album is an integral part of that legacy. A must to every Stanko fan!

This is the 2nd album by the great Argentinean Prog group Vox DeiFind albums by this artist, the first ever concept album in the Spanish language and one of the masterpieces of early South American Prog. Based (as the title suggests) on the Biblical story (similar to other concept albums on that subject) it presents an apocalyptic tale of the world. The music is truly exceptional as are the instrumental parts, especially the guitar solos. ZBIGNIEW NAMYSLOWSKI ~ THE LAST CONCERT
POLONIA 002 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1991 Released: 1992

This is a brilliant album by veteran Polish saxophonist / composer Zbigniew NamyslowskiFind albums by this artist, one of the pillars of modern Jazz in his country. A superb player and a gifted composer, Namyslowski first as a member of the Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artistīs group and later as a leader of his numerous ensembles created excellent music and served as a model to generations of Jazz players in his country. This album, one of very few live recordings by Namyslowski, was captured at Warsawīs Jazz Jamboree festival and features one of the strongest quartets Namyslowski ever led, with pianist Janusz SkowronFind albums by this artist, bassist Zbigniew WegehauptFind albums by this artist and drummer Cezary KonradFind albums by this artist. Violinist Maciej StrzelczykFind albums by this artist joins the quartet on a couple of tunes. All seven compositions performed are by Namyslowski and portray his wonderful sense of melody, polyrhythmic approach and tendency to incorporate World Music elements in his music. Two of the tracks are over 10 minutes long, which allows plenty of space for extensive improvisations. I have no idea why this album is entitled "The Last ConcertFind albums with this title" (perhaps this was the last concert with this particular quartet?), as this certainly wasnīt Namyslowskiīs last live performance and heīs still playing brilliantly twenty years later, to the delight to his many admirers and fans, as well as writing great music. For lovers of Polish Jazz, this is an absolute classic, which should be a part of any decent Jazz collection. Highly recommended!

ANDRZEJ PRZYBIELSKI ~ TREN ZALOBNY
MULTIKULTI 017 (Barcode: 5907529223178) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2008 - 2009 Released: 2011

This is the third posthumous release (in a few months) by the great Polish avant-garde trumpeter / composer Andrzej PrzybielskiFind albums by this artist, which is about as many albums as he released under his name during his entire life. This sad statistic once more reminds us that Art should be appreciated preferably while the Artist is still with us rather than when heīs gone. But, "better late than never", which is a solace for the fools, applies nevertheless. This album collects the recordings (both live and studio) Przybielski made with two young musicians: bassist Jacek MazurkiewiczFind albums by this artist and drummer Pawel OsickiFind albums by this artist, which were one of his last projects. The music is quite different from the acoustic trio performances with the Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist, as it also includes some electronically generated sound layers, vocal parts (with Przybielskiīs distinctive voice) and other effects, which expand the scope significantly. In many respects this is a lesser known side of Przybielskiīs activity, although he was involved with many innovative projects his entire life, some of which lied well beyond the Jazz idiom. Of course the music is brilliant and challenging as always in his case and attentive and open-minded listeners should find here an unusual and most rewarding musical experience. The album is an overwhelming proof of Przybielskiīs versatility and complete disregard of conventions and limitations, which makes his untimely death even more tragic, as he definitely was one of very few of his class. Modern avant-garde Jazz lovers rejoice!

ANDRZEJ PRZYBIELSKI ~ ABSTRACT
NOT TWO 761 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2003 Released: 2005

This is the first album recorded by Polish avant-garde Jazz trumpeter / composer Andrzej PrzybielskiFind albums by this artist with the fantastic rhythm section of Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist: bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej Brat OlesFind albums by this artist, and a unique document of the genius of Przybielski at work. The sessions, completely spontaneous and unplanned, capture on the spot improvisations by the trio, based of sketchy melodies and somewhat chaotic instruction given to the two "youngsters" by the legendary player seconds before the music starts. The relaxed atmosphere of this sessions and apparent good mood of the leader (the tape keeps running when he makes his little jokes) results in some of the best moments of Przybielskiīs playing ever, full of energy, Godly inspiration and great talent. Unfortunately with Przybielskiīs untimely death in February 2011, all we have lest are his rather scarce recordings, which should be cherished for generations to come. Itīs interesting to compare this recording with the posthumously released "De ProfundisFind albums with this title", recorded by the same trio, some seven years apart. Some of the music on both recordings originated in the same themes, but is completely different of course. This music is an absolute treasure in every respect and one can only hope that more people will discover this music, now saved for posterity. Absolute must to all avant-garde Jazz connoisseurs!

TOMASZ STANKO ~ LADY GO…

Recorded: 1984 Released: 2009

This is the second recording in the series of Jazz-Rock albums created by the great Polish trumpeter / composer Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist in the 1980s. Following "C.O.C.X.Find albums with this title" and preceding "Witkacy – PeyotlFind albums with this title", it is definitely the most melodic and "straight-forward" album Stanko ever recorded, with a set of superb melodies, which are great fun to listen to. Of course in Stankoīs case, simplicity means perfection and there is no compromise whatsoever with his usual standard of both performance and composing excellence. Recorded with guitarist Apostolis AnthimosFind albums by this artist (of SBBFind albums by this artist fame), who also plays drums here, bassist Witold SzczurekFind albums by this artist and percussionist Tomasz HolujFind albums by this artist, this is a beautiful example of Stankoīs versatility and his ability to rejuvenate and reinvent himself every decade or so. KINKS ~ ARTHUR (DELUXE EDITION)
SANCTUARY 273227 (Barcode: 602527322742) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1968 - 1969 Released: 2011

This is the 7th album by The KinksFind albums by this artist, the seminal British Pop / Rock band led by brothers Ray DaviesFind albums by this artist (who wrote all their wonderful material and was definitely one of the greatest composers in British Rock) and Dave DaviesFind albums by this artist (who played the lead guitar for the band). The first lineup, which lasted for five years, included also bassist Pete QuaifeFind albums by this artist and drummer Mick AvoryFind albums by this artist. Quaifeīs replacement John DaltonFind albums by this artist is heard on this album for the first time. Similar to other great British Rock bands like The HolliesFind albums by this artist, The WhoFind albums by this artist and even The Rolling StonesFind albums by this artist, The Kinks were overshadowed by The BeatlesFind albums by this artist, that in retrospect is a great injustice, as they certainly were as good if not better than the Fab Four in every respect. This album continues the new phase for the group, which developed a completely unique approach to writing music, which now included elements of Psychedelia and other influences. The lyrics were full of social commentary and concentrated on British society, history and way of life, often being quite sarcastic and critical. Although not a concept album as such, it was conceived and recorded as a soundtrack for a TV movie, which eventually was never made. Always truthful to themselves and their fans, the Kinks wonderfully mixed raw energy and melodic sophistication, which lost nothing of its intrinsic power through the years. This new edition adds a whole CD worth of bonus materials, including non-album singles, alternate takes, outtakes, mono and stereo versions and BBC sessions. Absolutely brilliant stuff!

WHO ~ QUADROPHENIA (DELUXE EDITION)
POLYDOR 2780503 (Barcode: 602527805030) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1972 - 1973 Released: 2011

This was the 6th studio album (7th including "Live At LeedsFind albums with this title") by the legendary British band The WhoFind albums by this artist and their second "Rock Opera" ("TommyFind albums with this title" was the first of course). In order to comprehend the enormity of Whoīs output of that period, one must recall that the three successive studio albums: "Tommy", "Who`s NextFind albums with this title" and "QuadropheniaFind albums with this title" were all double LPs, were based on literary plot / storyline and were written and composed by one man: Pete TownshendFind albums by this artist. The story behind "Quadrophenia" talks about a teenager boy called Jimmy, the opera protagonist, who suffers from quadruple schizophrenia (hence the title), where each of his multiple personalities represents one of the bandīs members. The social, psychological and moral aspects of Jimmyīs life, set in London and Brighton in the mid-1960s are the operaīs plot. In spite of the relative success of the album at the time of its release, it was severely criticized as self-indulgent and excessive, and was mostly completely misunderstood musically by the contemporary critics, which happened repeatedly with Whoīs albums. Often even passing time and perspective did not make significant difference in the order of recognition of the albumīs standing as one of the great masterpieces of British Rock. In 1979 the opera was transformed into a script and filmed, to be later released under the same name. The filmīs soundtrack features ten remixed songs from the original album and three new songs that did not appear on the album. In retrospect the music serves as a glorious reminder of times, when music was at the epicenter of Artistic expression with unprecedented and unfortunately unrepeated power and aptitude. This Deluxe Edition, produced by Townshend, adds a set of previously unreleased demo versions of the songs, which would later on become "Quadrophenia", and of course a remastered versions of the original album. Do I need to remind everybody again how essential it is?
Side Note: In addition to this Deluxe Edition there is also a Super Deluxe Edition of "Quadrophenia", a lavishly packed LP-sized box set, which includes 5 CDs, a beautiful book with text by Townshend and beautiful photographs and a plethora of other goodies. It is expensive, but worth every penny for a true Who fan!

GILAD HEKSELMAN ~ HEARTS WIDE OPEN
LE CHANT DU MONDE 2037 (Barcode: 3149024203725) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2011

This is the 3rd album by the sensational Israeli guitarist / composer Gilad HekselmanFind albums by this artist, who resides in NY since 2004, as do many other Israeli Jazz players. Hekselman quickly established himself as one of the top guitar players on the NY scene, a fact that is not a result of any publicity stunts but simply his incredible talent. With his tone very similar to early Pat MethenyFind albums by this artist, he is often compared to Metheny, but that kind of comparison is somewhat superficial. Hekselman is much more Jazz oriented than Metheny ever was in fact. Critics and more importantly fellow musicians agree unanimously that Hekselman was blessed with exceptional talent and his meteoric rise to fame is fully justified. This album, recorded with Hekselmanīs regular trio: bassist Joe MartinFind albums by this artist and drummer Marcus GilmoreFind albums by this artist and with guest appearance on four tracks by saxophonist Mark TurnerFind albums by this artist, presents eight original compositions, which are all ideal vehicles for the leaderīs display of his guitar magic, which is pretty amazing from start to finish. Clear, elegant, pure and melodic, his playing is always right on top of what is best for the music at any particular moment. Never clotted or overcrowded by too many notes, which usually plagues guitar players, he dances on his strings like leaves on a spring breeze, as if fingers and brain commands had nothing to do with it. But honestly, and most importantly, this is 100% unadulterated Jazz, free of any attempts whatsoever to become a neck-breaking Fusion trip, another plague of todayīs guitar players. If this is what Hekselman is capable of at the tender age of 28, his future seems to be laid out for him on a golden path to stardom. Hopefully his head is not lost in the process. Hats off to you, Gilad and God Bless!

ENRICO RAVA ~ TRIBE
ECM 2218 (Barcode: 602527669700) ~ ITALY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2011

This album presents an elderly Master surrounded by his disciples, or in other words veteran Italian trumpeter / composer Enrico RavaFind albums by this artist with his all Italian and very young current quintet, which includes trombonist Gianluca PetrellaFind albums by this artist, pianist Giovanni GuidiFind albums by this artist, bassist Gabriele EvagelistaFind albums by this artist and drummer Fabrizio SferraFind albums by this artist. On four of the twelve tracks the quintet is expanded into a sextet with the addition of guitarist Giacomo AncillottoFind albums by this artist. In spite of the age difference, and perhaps thanks to it, the resulting music is simply fabulous. Ravaīs often difficult compositions are treated with utmost respect by his fellow musicians, with each and every one on them adding his very personal touch, and the combined efforts simply work out wonderfully well. Although somewhat melancholic and somehow deliberately slow, the music manages to keep the listener involved it its development and mesmerized. Of course the level of musicianship is excellent throughout, but that by itself is often not enough to make the music worthwhile. It is the leaderīs vision and his sense of direction that makes the music become a work of Art and enables the listener to enjoy it even at the most intricate moments. So regardless of what some critics may tell you, this is a remarkable album, artistically fulfilling and aesthetically satisfying, well worth your money and a source of many enjoyable moments of music. GATO BARBIERI ~ THE THIRD WORLD
SONY 25758 (Barcode: 743212575828) ~ ARGENTINA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1969 Released: 2009

This is an absolutely stunning early album by Argentinean Jazz saxophonist / composer Gato BarbieriFind albums by this artist. Barbieri left his homeland in 1962, settling first in Europe, where he worked with local as well as American musicians, who resided in Europe due to a much more open and receptive cultural climate there. Barbieri also worked closely with movie directors composing scores for several films. In 1968 he recorded finally his first album as a leader, called "In Search Of The MysteryFind albums with this title", released by the legendary ESPFind albums on this label label in NY. A year later he recorded this album, which was released on no less legendary Flying DutchmanFind albums on this label label, founded and initially owned by the great producer Bob ThieleFind albums by this artist, which released some of the most impressive, interesting and revolutionary Jazz music in the late 1960s and early 1970s by artists from many corners of the world, who could not find a label to release their music on. The lineup if extremely impressive and includes bassist Charlie HadenFind albums by this artist, pianist Lonnie Liston SmithFind albums by this artist, drummer Beaver HarrisFind albums by this artist, trombonist Roswell RuddFind albums by this artist and percussionist Richard LandrumFind albums by this artist. The music is one of the earliest examples of World Music influenced Jazz, with Barbieri incorporating his unique amalgam of South American melody lines and rhythmic approach, all originating from his native Argentina (yes, the Tango), Brazil and other sources. All these elements are presented in a Free Jazz framework, where collective improvisation is the dominant means of expression. Barbieriīs brilliant playing is the focal point of course, with his extended surges of tenor saxophone fluctuating with seemingly endless energy and passion. Obviously strongly influenced by John Coltrane, Barbieri produces a "total" wall of sound, which requires the listener to open up completely and absorb the influx of many parallel sources of sound and create his own impressions. Of course this all makes perfect sense, once properly grasped and turns out to be truly prophetic music. Barbieriīs later recordings would become somewhat less intensive and he would return to melody as well, but his brilliant playing would always be a beacon of total dedication and an example of masterly and brilliantly executed music. Absolutely stunning stuff!

WOJCIECH STARONIEWICZ ~ ALTERNATIONS
ALLEGRO 017 (Barcode: 5901157049179) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

This is an excellent album by Polish saxophonist / composer Wojciech StaroniewiczFind albums by this artist, recorded with his quartet, which includes pianist Slawek JaskulkeFind albums by this artist, bassist Michal BaranskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Hubert ZemlerFind albums by this artist. Polish piano superstar Leszek MozdzerFind albums by this artist sits in on three tracks, replacing the regular pianist. Staroniewicz composed all the nine tracks present here, which again proves his abilities as a composer, as they versatile and vary in mood and melodic direction, including some subtle World Music influences. The music is performed perfectly with the leader soloing extensively, and his solos are always a pleasure to listen to. On the three tracks Mozdzer guests on, he also gets plenty of space to show his chops. The rhythm section gives the soloist excellent support and the overall sound of the quartet is very solid. Staroniewicz has a wonderful tone on tenor and soprano saxophone and an unusually melodic approach, which does not diminish his improvisational qualities, which are truly impressive. Overall this album is a lot of fun to listen to and a great proof that solid, melodic Jazz can be also of high quality and interest. This album is most warmly recommended to Jazz fans who love quality modern mainstream Jazz.

This is a beautiful album by Polish saxophonist / composer Wojciech StaroniewiczFind albums by this artist, recorded with his quintet, which is somewhat unusual, as it also includes accordionist Cezary PaciorekFind albums by this artist, a rare combination these days. The other musicians are: guitarist Maciej GrzywaczFind albums by this artist, bassist Piotr LemanczykFind albums by this artist and drummer Tomasz SowinskiFind albums by this artist. Staroniewicz has a wonderfully worm tone on his tenor saxophone and an unusually melodic approach, which does not diminish his improvisational qualities, which are truly impressive. The accordion adds a wonderful fuzzy "old time feel" to the entire session, and the Fusion guitar solos are a nice contrast. The music is mostly original with just two standards included for good measure. Overall this album is a lot of fun to listen to and a great proof that solid, melodic Jazz can be also of high quality and interest. TOMASZ STANKO ~ PEYOTL - WITKACY
POLONIA 037/038 (Barcode: 5904542687307) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1984 - 1986 Released: 2004

This is probably the most significant recording by Polish trumpeter virtuoso / composer Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist, surely at least among his Polish recordings before his later ECMFind albums on this label period. Following Miles DavisFind albums by this artist, Stanko switched to Jazz-Rock Fusion (albeit a decade later) and his 1980s output with his FreelectronicFind albums by this artist ensemble is radically different from the Free Jazz he played in the 1970s. This double album consists of one studio recording and one live recording, both expressing Stankoīs power as a performer and a composer to the max. The studio album, which was compiled over a period of two years, presents music composed by Stanko at the period when he was experimenting with hallucinogens and was deeply influenced by the writings of the Polish mystic / philosopher / avant-garde artist WitkacyFind albums by this artist (Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz), who was also an early experimenter with drugs. Text excerpts from Witkacyīs book about drugs are recited and closely incorporated into the fascinating music, which floats over a repetitious hypnotic vamp and layers of electronic keyboard sounds. The highlight of this album is undoubtedly the inclusion of a second genius trumpet player, Andrzej PrzybielskiFind albums by this artist, who exchanges licks with Stanko in a brilliant manner. The fact that Stanko invited Przybielski to participate in this recording is a testimony of how highly he regarded his unbelievable talent. Other musicians participating in these recordings are: keyboardists Janusz SkowronFind albums by this artist and Tadeusz SudnikFind albums by this artist, guitarist Apostolis AnthimosFind albums by this artist, bassist Witold SzczurekFind albums by this artist, and drummer Zbigniew BarysiakFind albums by this artist. The recitation is by the great actor Marek WalczewskiFind albums by this artist. In retrospect the fact that this music was recorded almost 30 years ago seem incomprehensible, as it so much more advanced that almost any music done these days. Stankoīs genius definitely reaches here one of its great peaks, which luckily for us was captured for posterity. Sadly this album is probably little known by his worldwide fan base, as it is very difficult to find, which of course is a shame. If one must own just one Stanko album, this is it, at least as far as Iīm concerned. Absolute unadulterated genius!

MILES DAVIS ~ WARSAW CONCERT 1983
IMMORTAL 104243 (Barcode: 8712177056620) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1983 Released: 2010

The importance of this music stretches far beyond the fact that this is music played by the great Miles DavisFind albums by this artist during the last decade of his life, when his playing was rejuvenated and full of creative powers again. This unique recording was captured during the Warsawīs Jazz Jamboree festival, Easter Europeīs most important Jazz even for several decades during the Socialist regime. In fact Warsawīs JJ was almost the only Jazz Festival where Eastern European Jazz enthusiast could hear Western Jazz musicians live. The fact that the JJ festival was able to bring Miles Davis over, during a renewed peak of his world popularity and against all odds (economic, political, etc.), is a miracle and the fascinating story behind the scenes is worthy of a movie script. Iīve been privileged to be a part of this story, but that is well beyond the scope of these notes. The music presents Miles accompanied by an ensemble of young and talented musicians, which consists of saxophonist Bill EvansFind albums by this artist, guitarist John ScofieldFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Robert Irving IIIFind albums by this artist, bassist Darryl JonesFind albums by this artist, drummer Al FosterFind albums by this artist and percussionist Mino CineluFind albums by this artist. They play the material that Miles preferred at the time, which is funky rhythmically, but quite complex harmonically. There is plenty of space for extended improvisations, with Miles playing more than he did in a long time, blowing the listeners away every time. In retrospect the music sounds as good today as it did at the time, which once again confirms Milesī genius and prophetic vision of music. Since this is not a part of the Milesī Columbia output, it is much more difficult to find. Great stuff!

MUZA 843 (Barcode: 5901844988125) ~ POLAND ~ Progressive Rock

This is the 1st album by the seminal Polish Prog / Fusion group SBBFind albums by this artist, founded by three ex-members of NiemenFind albums by this artistīs support group: bassist / keyboardist / leader Jozef SkrzekFind albums by this artist, guitarist Apostolis AnthimosFind albums by this artist and drummer Jerzy PiotrowskiFind albums by this artist. All three musicians were absolute virtuosi on their respective instruments and all three composed music. Their unusual approach, power of imagination and disregard of conventions turned them into immediate superstars on the East European music scene, with no rival act to challenge their supremacy for many years. Their influence on the music scene in Poland and other East European countries was enormous and their music and they way they made music served as a model to countless Prog / Fusion ensembles. The lengthy (running for the entire duration of both LP sides) improvisations, with incredible dynamics and changing tempi, moods and themes was quite innovative at the time, and SBB were one of the very few groups who could actually make it work. In retrospect this remains as one of the most important debut Prog / Fusion albums of all time and an absolutely essential piece of any serious record collection.

LOL COXHILL ~ EAR OF BEHOLDER
ESOTERIC 2275 ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1970 - 1971 Released: 2011

This is the debut album by British avant-garde hero, saxophonist / composer Lol CoxhillFind albums by this artist. His activities over the years, sadly not often properly documented on record, show him as one of the most forward-thinking artists on the scene. His involvement with Rock and Jazz musicians alike show his versatility and complete disregard of conventions. A brilliant instrumentalist, Coxhill can truly move the listener and bring him to places rarely visited beforehand. This album, which collects many live performances and a few studio pieces, recorded over a span of one year, show Coxhill in charge of his element. The music is completely beyond classification, and probably extremely weird to an untrained ear, but to an avant-garde connoisseur this is heaven on earth. The original double LP was released on the legendary DandelionFind albums on this label label, co-owned by John PeelFind albums by this artist, and has been out of print for decades. Soon after the album was recorded, the group disintegrated into the this air, leaving behind this obscure Gem, that was hidden from the public eye for over two decades and re-discovered in the 1990s as an extra-rare collectors’ item. AFTER CRYING ~ CREATURA
PERIFERIC 201 (Barcode: 5998272708722) ~ HUNGARY ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2011

This is the 11th album by the great Hungarian Prog group After CryingFind albums by this artist and their first studio release after almost a decade. A work of epic proportions, the album brings us 23 short pieces, divided into four long suites. The overall scope of the rich instrumentation and the majestic music is absolutely stunning and again the group easily arrives at the top of contemporary Prog, leaving almost every other Prog group far, far behind. The six members of the group, playing a plethora of instruments between them and including three great composers are a formidable force. They are supported by fifteen guest musicians, sounding at times like a symphonic orchestra, both stylistically and sonically. The music is absolutely brilliant, from start to end, heavily influenced by Classical romanticisms, but sounding fresh and contemporary. Peter PejtsikFind albums by this artist is back at the cello, heartbreakingly squeezing those sad motifs, as he did on the bandīs early albums. The album also returns to Hungarian vocals, or rather recitation, which of course I always support. Hungarian might not be the most popular language on earth, but its original resonance suits this music perfectly. In short, this is a most welcome comeback and a great piece of music, which should give you a most pleasurable musical experience, if youīre into unusual and challenging stuff. If you hear differently (Iīve read some cold reviews), just know that some people have no clue whatsoever about music. Brilliance all over!

Brilliantly catching up on the "Bob DylanFind albums by this artist going electric" trend, they recorded a series of absolutely outstanding albums, which remain to this day some of the best music ever recorded on this planet. Using the US Folk tradition to the max, Dylan included, with clever and conscious lyrics and exquisite vocal harmonies, they added the electric guitars and spiced everything with their incredible talents and musical sensitivity. In time they incorporated Psychedelia and other influences (including Jazz), and pioneered other new developments themselves, which earns them a highly respected place on the pedestal of modern music. MILES DAVIS ~ LIVE IN EUROPE 1967 – THE BOOTLEG SERIES VOL. 1
COLUMBIA 94053 (Barcode: 886979405325) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1967 Released: 2011

The Miles DavisFind albums by this artist second quintet is often considered the ultimate Jazz ensemble of all times. With saxophonist Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist, pianist Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist, bassist Ron CarterFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony WilliamsFind albums by this artist as his partners, trumpeter / composer Davis was pushing music light-years ahead during the three and a half years this quintet existed (1965-1968). The studio albums recorded by the quintet (see "The Complete Columbia Studio Recordings Of The Miles Davis Quintet 1965-68Find albums with this title") are absolute masterpieces, which are totally timeless and unparalleled in their depth and perfection. However, it was on stage that this ensemble really created its best work. Sadly, the recorded legacy of live performances by this quintet is not very extensive and therefore this release, which brings us 3 CDs and a DVD of previously unreleased live material by this quintet, is worth its weight in gold to every Davis connoisseur. Recorded (and filmed) during the quintetīs European tour in October / November 1967, this music and the film were all captured within a period of eleven days, which means that we get a clearly focused picture of what they were doing at the time. After playing together for almost three years, the quintet was at the absolute peek of their creative powers, completely focused and intimately linked together by telepathic musical understanding. Listening to these live performance confirms all this, but also much more. It ultimately shows how creative these players were, even when performing a fixed set of compositions evening after evening. Davis, firmly in the lead, gives the cues to move from one composition to another or a change of tempo, but allows the individual musicians complete freedom. It is this freedom, which is the most striking and significant element omnipresent here, almost shocking in its power. Large portions of this music could be easily taken from a Free Jazz concert, even though the basic concept is still anchored in mainstream. Collective improvisations often have all five members of the quintet playing at different tempi, scales and themes at the same time, somehow miraculously making a perfect sense. Personally Iīve always found the young Tony Williams to be the most striking personality in this ensemble, with his perception of rhythm more radically different and innovative than the other quintet members. A careful listener will be able to hear Williams play four different rhythms simultaneously, each played by one of his limbs. This barrage of sound is the most striking drumming imaginable, and an almost mystical experience. It would be ridiculous to recommend this release, at it goes without saying that all modern Jazz listeners should find it absolutely essential and an obligatory part of their collections. Since the subtitle suggests that this is just the first in a series of previously unreleased Miles Davis recordings, all I can say is Halleluiah!

Recorded over a period of seven years, this album presents a series of compositions for electronic keyboards and a Jazz ensemble, merging ambient, electronic, Free Jazz and Improvised Music. The list of players reads like the who´s who of contemporary US Free Jazz / experimental scene and includes bassist Mark DresserFind albums by this artist, bass clarinetist Ned RothenbergFind albums by this artist, guitarists Henry KaiserFind albums by this artist and Elliott SharpFind albums by this artist and many other outstanding musicians. The music consists of electronic ambient layers, which serve as basis for the Jazz players to paint their improvisations on top. It is heavily atmospheric, magical and enthralling, pulling the listener deeper and deeper into the strangely beautiful world of sound created by the composer and the performers. Of course such music requires attentive listening, but as avant-garde as it is, it remains highly communicative, even to the lesser trained ears. This album proves that Nechushtan is a surprisingly versatile musician, with lots to offer, which means he should be closely followed as he keeps surprising us again and again. Great stuff!

ADAM BALDYCH ~ MAGICAL THEATRE
ELITE 001 (Barcode: 885767685468) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2011

The violin holds a very special position in the history of modern Polish Jazz, and except for France, no other European country can pride itself in such splendid heritage as far as the use of violin in Jazz is concerned. The first generation of modern Polish Jazz musicians includes three distinguished Jazz violinists: Michał UrbaniakFind albums by this artist (born 1943), Zbigniew SeifertFind albums by this artist (born 1946) and Krzesimir DębskiFind albums by this artist (born 1953). Each of these virtuosi and exceptional composers made his mark not only on Polish Jazz, but also on European Jazz and World Jazz scenes. Of course each of these three musicians offered a unique and very individual approach to violin, all being innovators and pioneers: Urbaniak contributed greatly to the development of Jazz-Fusion and Jazz-Funk, Seifert to modern and Free Jazz and Dębski to the amalgam of Jazz and contemporary Classical music. Adam BałdychFind albums by this artist (born 1986) is of course a member of a different generation; one might even say a child of a very different era. His predecessors lived and created under the Socialist regime, which of course was far from enabling the freedom of expression and the opportunities to study and develop musical talents, and their life was a story of constant struggle with reality. Bałdych grew up in a "new" Poland, liberated, democratic and full of opportunities. That does not mean, of curse, that his life and his path to success was an easy one. Considered a child prodigy, Bałdych started his performing and then composing careers very early on, which explains his extremely impressive biography at the age of 25. The list of awards, notable performances, composing credits and recordings could easily satisfy a musician twice his age or more. And yet Bałdych considers this album a pivotal point of his career and although not his recording debut, this is certainly a new begging, hopefully of an international career. Recorded with his band called Damage ControlFind albums by this artist, "Magical TheatreFind albums with this title" is certainly an album, which should expose him to the worldwide audiences. Bałdych composed six of the eight compositions present here and co-composed one more, with the last being composed by the bandīs keyboardist. The band includes gifted young players, who provide him with excellent support and execute his complex compositions with grace and panache. Full of youthful spirit and energy, the album flows beautifully from one track to the next, changing moods and atmospheres, but always remaining fascinating. There are no dull moments here, no boring parts and no fillers – just one continuous flow of entrancing music, which keeps the listener captivated. Of course regardless of how good the performers might be, the primary strength of this album lies in the music contained herein. Bałdychīs compositions are simply spot on and his unique ability to amalgamate the Jazz tradition, the Polish romanticism and the contemporary sound techniques works perfectly. An experienced listener will be able to discover many delicate musical hints and references in this music, especially in Bałdychīs solos, but surely anybody able of enjoying good music will find here starlight qualities. Iīm sure that Michał, Zbigniew and Krzesimir would be proud of the continuator of their splendid heritage. What remains is to hope that as many music connoisseurs as possible will eventually discover this gem and hold it dear to their hearts. I certainly hope it does happen, big time, as it is well deserved!

TOMASZ STANKO ~ TOO PEE
NEW EDITION 87025 (Barcode: 614511738224) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1993 Released: 2005

This is a reissue of the album originally released under the title "Suite TalkFind albums with this title" on the ITMFind albums on this label label, which captures the wonderful meeting between the Polish Jazz trumpet virtuoso / composer Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist and two German Jazz players: reedman Michael RiesslerFind albums by this artist and bassist Manfred BründlFind albums by this artist. The trio performs a set of eight original compositions in a wonderful atmosphere of mutual respect, conversation and above all listening to each other. Stankoīs "sharp" trumpet and Riesslerīs "soft" bass clarinet harmonize beautifully, with Bründlīs bass providing the pulsating rhythmic support. These players are all completely open to every musical possibility, that the music they make is a magnificent expression of freedom, without being chaotic or messy. After all this is Free Jazz and Improvised Music, but with an openness towards melody and self-imposed restriction toward form. Stanko is in top form, with renewed energies, which characterize his early 1990s output, revitalized and as always exceptionally creative. Itīs excellent to have this superb album back in circulation and anybody who missed it the first time around should definitely avoid the same mistake again. Brilliant stuff!

TOMASZ STANKO ~ BALLADYNA – THEATER PLAY COMPOSITIONS
GOWI 16 (Barcode: 786497093526) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1994 Released: 1994

This little-known album by Polish trumpeter / composer Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist contains the music he wrote for the theatre performance of the tragedy "Balladyna" written by Polish playwright Juliusz SlowackiFind albums by this artist. Not to be confused with Stanko´s pivotal album also entitled "BalladynaFind albums with this title", recorded almost two decades earlier and released on ECMFind albums on this label. The album presents the complete theatre soundtrack for the play, consisting of 23 tracks ranging in length between half a minute to over five minutes. The central theme is repeated many times in different renditions, arrangements, tempi and instrumentations, creating a beautiful and often chilling atmosphere. The music stands on it´s own as a completely valid piece of music, which can be enjoyed separately from the theatre performance it was intended for. The performers include Stanko´s quartet members: pianist Marcin WasilewskiFind albums by this artist, bassist Slawomir KurkiewiczFind albums by this artist and drummer Michal MiskiewiczFind albums by this artist, as well as saxophonist Tomasz SzukalskiFind albums by this artist, vocalist Ewa WanatFind albums by this artist and percussionists Piotr WolskiFind albums by this artist and Zbigniew BrysiakFind albums by this artist. In retrospect this is an important piece of Stanko´s recorded legacy, similarly to his other soundtrack compositions, which show his rare ability to write wonderful atmospheric music. This is a must to all Stanko connoisseurs, although deleted since many years with (so far) no prospects for a reissue.

ANDRZEJ PRZYBIELSKI ~ SESJA OPEN
PRIVATE EDITION ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2005 Released: 2011

The fact that this is the only recording session as a leader by the great Polish Jazz trumpeter / composer Andrzej PrzybielskiFind albums by this artist is truly shocking, especially since it was only released recently following his tragic and untimely death in February 2011. Although Przybielski took part as a sidemen in numerous Polish Jazz recordings, his tragic life story ridden by a plethora of personal issues (mental instability, drug addiction, sociopathic behavior and reclusion) is equivalent to the amount of misfortune found in a Greek Tragedy, making him a rare bird and an outsider, known almost exclusively only by other Polish Jazz musicians. And yet, he was a true musician´s musician, as his genius was usually appreciated only by those, who were able to understand how great his talent truly was. In retrospect Przybielski had only one peer on the Polish scene, the great Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist, even if their respective careers were so diametrically different. Przybielski´s tone, phrasing, speed and inventiveness, clarity, consistency and versatility are so amazing, that (again in retrospect) his existence is not only Polish Jazz best ever kept secret, but a phenomenon worthy of a worldwide attention. This album, recorded almost by accident, was supposed to present Przybielski´s regular quartet led by him in the last years of his life with vibraphonist Karol SzymanowskiFind albums by this artist, bassist Grzegorz NadolnyFind albums by this artist and drummer Grzegorz DaronFind albums by this artist. However the vibraphonist could not take part in the session and was replaced at the last moment by saxophonist Yuriy OvsyannikovFind albums by this artist. The recording consists of eight original compositions by Przybielski, brilliantly executed by the quartet, mostly in a Free Jazz mood, but with clearly stated melodic themes and completely coherent rhythmic support, which keeps it well inside the realm of music most Jazz enthusiasts are able to enjoy. Of course "hearing is believing" in this case, so until you do you have to take my word for it – but it probably will be one of the best Jazz trumpet performances you ever experienced. Of course one mustn´t miss Przybielski´s "De ProfundisFind albums with this title" with the Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist (also released posthumously). I personally take a huge pride in the fact that Przybielski played on my production of "The Book Of JobFind albums with this title", which gave me the personal delight to watch him play at first hand. The album was released by a foundation, dedicating the proceeds to a production of a multimedia album about the life and Art of Andrzej Przybielski – only 500 copies of this album were pressed (´nuff said!).

Britton, who also sings the lead vocal parts, composed most of the music, and he certainly can spin a tune. HOUR OF THE SHIPWRECK ~ THE HOUR IS UPON US
PRIVATE EDITION (Barcode: 796873052016) ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2007 Released: 2008

This is a stunning debut album by the US Prog band Hour Of The ShipwreckFind albums by this artist, led by multi-instrumentalist / composer Richie KohanFind albums by this artist, who composed all the music and wrote the lyrics. The album is a very ambitious project involving rich and complex arrangements, intricate instrumental parts and a big choir (a real one, not a synthesized one). The result works out remarkably well and the album is a delight from start to finish. Although obviously Prog, it could be a great movie score and clearly expands beyond the usual straight-ahead Prog. The music is somewhat mystical and full of tension, but at the same time very lyrical and melodious. The balance and the well applied contrast between the ambient and the more Rocky passages works out very all. Kohan´s vocals are perfectly suited for this kind of music and as a result this is one of relatively few Prog albums where the vocals are not a nuisance. Altogether this is a complete surprise, coming out of nowhere, and a major piece of musical history for the genre, which unfortunately was completely missed and passed by the Prog crowd. Well now´s the time to remedy your error!

HALF PAST FOUR ~ RABBIT IN THE VESTIBULE
PRIVATE EDITION (Barcode: 779289400428) ~ CANADA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2008 Released: 2008

This is an absolutely brilliant debut album by the excellent Canadian Prog group Half Past FourFind albums by this artist, fronted by female vocalist Kyree VibrantFind albums by this artist. Except for the singer, the three other members of the band are all from ex-USSR (Russia, Ukraine – via Israel, Moldova), now living in Canada. Vibrant has a background in Jazz, which is pretty apparent in her singing. All the band members play several instruments, allowing them to create very versatile musical vistas and rich instrumental arrangements. Although the music is kept in strict "song" format (the album includes 13 songs, none of which exceeds 8 minutes), the music is as progressive as it ever gets, with quirky harmonic and rhythmic changes, sophisticated melodies and first class instrumental work. The album is not only excellent on its aesthetic values but it is also an absolutely delightful listening experience, which is most warmly recommended. Do yourself a favor and get this one ASAP!

This is the 2nd album by the excellent Norwegian Prog band Magic PieFind albums by this artist. The band is a sextet, with the usual guitar / keyboards / bass / drums lineup, fronted by two lead vocalists, which enables them to use a lot of vocal harmonies. The music is beautifully melodic and the long tracks allow for extended instrumental passages, which are executed elegantly and with a lot of passion. In some respect the band is similar to the Swedish band The Flower KingsFind albums by this artist, at their best, but manages to avoid being repetitious and excessive, like the FK often are. The title track is a five-part suite lasting almost 50 minutes. This is a very impressive follow up to their great debut and another example of the Scandinavian Prog, which rarely disappoints. CHARLES LLOYD / MARIA FARANTOURI ~ ATHENS CONCERT
ECM 2205/06 (Barcode: 602527678337) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2011

A meeting of two musical Colossi: legendary US saxophonist / composer Charles LloydFind albums by this artist and no less legendary Greek singer Maria FarantouriFind albums by this artist, known worldwide not only a Greeceīs first Lady of song but also as her countryīs voice of conscience and political activism. Farantouriīs association with Greek national composer Mikis TheodorakisFind albums by this artist since the 1960s has placed her both in the centre of the countryīs cultural life and its political struggle for liberty. Lloyd and Farantouri developed a close personal friendship over many years, which resulted in exposing him to Greek culture, history and of course music. Slowly they collected material they could perform together, which eventually let to this magical evening of music, captured live in the footsteps of the Acropolis. The participants include also the members of the Charles Lloyd quartet: pianist Jason MoranFind albums by this artist, bassist Reuben RogersFind albums by this artist and drummer Eric HarlandFind albums by this artist and two Greek musicians: Socratis SinopoulosFind albums by this artist on lyra and Takis FarazisFind albums by this artist on piano. Together these seven Artists create a universe of music so beautiful and aesthetically fulfilling that it leaves the listener completely awestruck and overwhelmed. Of course the marriage of Jazz with other forms of music like Folklore, World Music or Classical is quite common these days, but some of these attempts definitely work better than others. This one works wonderfully and presents not only a perfect amalgam of different musical traditions but also a perfect marriage of music and words, or in more global sense a cultural melting pot of rare magnitude. Thousands of years of human history, from ancient Greece to now, and thousands of miles linking Africa, Europe and America, all come together here, symbolizing the universality of the human culture, which knows no borders, no nations and no disparity. In the world completely obsessed with total decadence and complete lack of any values, cultural and moral, people who are able to make such artistic statement as this one should be cherished and applauded and I humbly join the ones who do just that. A strikingly beautiful piece of music!

JOHN SURMAN / JACK DEJOHNETTE ~ INVISIBLE NATURE
ECM 1796 (Barcode: 044001637629) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2000 Released: 2002

Twenty years after recording their previous duo project ("The Amazing Adventures Of Simon SimonFind albums with this title") for the ECMFind albums on this label label, British saxophonist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist and US drummer / composer Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist meet again for a live recording of almost completely improvised music, captured herein. Both these musicians have already established their status as Giants of modern music, which means they need not to prove anything anymore. This music is made for the pleasure (intellectual and emotional as one) of making music together and confirming the bond of musical friendship. The nature of Improvised Music makes it a priori more difficult to identify with than composed music. The process of the on-the-fly invention and creation can be extremely egocentric and intimate. But these two musicians magically create instantaneous music, which is communicative and immediately likeable, at least to well trained listeners. This album should be considered a true musical gem of rare quality by anybody with enough aesthetic integrity to listen to it open-mindedly. Surman´s virtuosity is simply spine-tingling and clearly time seems to flow in a parallel universe as far as he´s concerned, as he remains completely untouched by it. For me listening to this music evokes deeply emotional reaction, every time, confirming yet again my opinion that Surman is surely one of the very few prophetic musicians still among us. Beyond essential!

CHICK COREA / STEFANO BOLLANI ~ ORVIETO
ECM 2222 (Barcode: 602527796925) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2011

Pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist is obviously very fond of the great Art of piano duets; over the years he pioneered this highly demanding and difficult performing act with such piano luminaries like Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist, Friedrich GuldaFind albums by this artist, Nicolas EconomouFind albums by this artist, Gonzalo RubalcabaFind albums by this artist and recently Hiromi UeharaFind albums by this artist. This live recording of the duet with the great Italian pianist / composer Stefano BollaniFind albums by this artist is the latest chapter in this long saga. They perform twelve pieces, which include three co-composed improvisations, one original tune each and the rest are standards. The performance is stellar, from start to finish, as expected. Both players are obvious virtuosi and their mutual respect and understanding turn the two pianos into one instrument, which is grander that the sum of its parts. This album marks the return of Corea to the legendary ECMFind albums on this label label after many years – a most welcome event. There is no real need to add much more here; those familiar with Coreaīs previous duo recordings will be surely delighted again, those unfamiliar with this great musical Art form should try it out – the sooner the better. Delightful stuff!

GARY PEACOCK ~ VOICE FROM THE PAST - PARADIGM
ECM 1210 (Barcode: 731451776823) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1981 Released: 1990

This great album by US bassist / composer Gary PeacockFind albums by this artist is a milestone achievement in his extensive career. Recorded with an all star quartet with Polish trumpeter Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist, Norwegian saxophonist Jan GarbarekFind albums by this artist and his life-long partner drummer Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist, the album presents six extended pieces, all composed by Peacock, beautifully executed by the participants. In retrospect this is one of the pivotal albums, which summarize the 1970s, which was perhaps the most creative period for Free Jazz, expanding upon the seeds planted a decade earlier by the pioneers of the genre. Most Jazz musicians in the 1980s were to return to the "roots", with modern mainstream experiencing a remarkable renaissance. But this album is still very much rooted in the Free Jazz tradition, with creative group improvisation and telepathic interplay are the main ingredients. Stankoīs input is simply breathtaking, which confirms the fact that he was at that time at one of his creative peaks. But all the musicians play incredibly well and the session displays creative fire of rare magnitude. In retrospect this is definitely on of the strongest albums of that period, sadly rarely mentioned as such. Brilliant stuff!

Wonderful album indeed - Peacock is somewhat reminiscent of Barre Phillips on this (eg, Mountainscapes, w/John Surman). For me it is completely timeless, and does not sound like a throw-back to the 70s or any other specific time.

CHICK COREA ~ SEPTET
ECM 1297 (Barcode: 042282725820) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 1984 Released: 1985

This remarkable album by pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist marks his first full-scale entry into contemporary Classical music. It includes his five-part suite for septet (piano, string quartet, flute and French horn) and another shorter piece, originally composed for guitarist Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist. The septet consists of Classical musicians and includes flautist Steve KujalaFind albums by this artist, who also recorded a duo album with Corea ("VoyageFind albums with this title"). The music, although intended as contemporary Classical, hints clearly to the composerīs Jazz background, both rhythmically and melodically. Beautifully performed, with some exceptional flute solos, this is a piece of music that is worthy of habitual revisits, satisfaction guaranteed. A must to Jazz-Classical Fusion fans and Corea connoisseurs!

TOMASZ STANKO ~ CHAMELEON
METAL MIND 0401 (Barcode: 5907785027404) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1982 Released: 2006

This albumīs title is perhaps the most concise and precise description of its contents. With the 1970s behind him Polish trumpeter / composer Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist takes a sharp turn off the path he followed previously as the leader of the local Free Jazz / avant-garde scene and as other musicians before him (or like a chameleon) entered the world of Jazz-Rock Fusion. The album was recorded in Athens in 1982 and reminded unreleased until 1989 (by that time Stanko was already moving to the next phase of his career), when it was finally released by a small independent Greek label. But chronologically this is the first recording of Stankoīs 1980s "new" style, preceding "C.O.C.X.Find albums with this title". The setting is a trio with guitarist Apostolis AnthimosFind albums by this artist (of SBBFind albums by this artist fame), who also plays bass, drums and percussion and young keyboardist Janusz SkowronFind albums by this artist, who uses the electronic devices to create beautiful sound vistas. The music is (as always with Stanko) absolutely stunning and quite different from his earlier work. Here we can hear the "easier" or happier side of Stanko, with almost cheerful melody lines and relatively simple rhythmic approach. Letīs make no mistake however; this is still Stanko at his best, with his unmistakable personal way of making music, virtuosic blowing and genius musical concept, all this in a slightly more accessible wrap up. Of the eleven tracks on the album seven were composed by Stanko and four are credited to the trio, as much of the music was actually created on the fly in the studio. In retrospect this is definitely one of the most memorable Stanko albums and an absolute must to all his numerous fans. Just grab it!

Stanko does play beautifully on this album, and as a budding completist I donīt actually regret buying the album, but I have to say that the other instrumentation often leaves a lot to be desired, being more Pop (and occasionally TV-Schmaltz) than Jazz-Rock

TOMASZ STANKO ~ TALES FOR A GIRL, 12
POLONIA 046 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1991 Released: 1995

With the 1980s over, Polish trumpeter / composer Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist enters the next decade with another pivotal recording, which marks yet another about face change with the return to "classic" Jazz, as defined by Stankoīs unique talent. This incredible album is basically a solo trumpet recording, an extremely bold and difficult project for the artist, which truly emphasizes his genius in full. Accompanied only by keyboardist Janusz SkowronFind albums by this artist, who produces layers of atmospheric background, Stanko blows with full might presenting thirteen brilliantly concise pieces of music, which are simply mind-blowing. His virtuosity as a performer is demonstrated here perhaps more vividly than on any other Stanko album, certainly any of his previous recordings up to that one. His lyricism and incredible power of expression are overwhelming and the totality of his music is unparalleled. Although solo recordings (in Jazz or other types of music) are usually quite difficult for the less experienced listener, this album is so powerful that is able to mesmerize any listener sensitive to music. This album is the mark every other trumpet album should be measured against, a work of pure genius and an absolutely essential piece of Art in any sense of this word. Stunning!

TOMASZ STANKO ~ C.O.C.X.
POLONIA 088 (Barcode: 5904542687888) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1983 Released: 2008

This great album by Polish trumpeter / composer Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist marks his entry into the second period of his career, which is an almost complete about face in comparison to his earlier work, which was mostly associated with Free Jazz. During the next decade (1980s) Stanko will record primarily with young musicians, often associated with Rock rather than with Jazz, creating a unique (as always) brand of Jazz-Rock Fusion. This album, recorded in a quartet setting with guitarist Apostolis AnthimosFind albums by this artist (of SBBFind albums by this artist fame), bassist Witold SzczurekFind albums by this artist and percussionist Jose TorresFind albums by this artist, presents a series of beautiful melodies, which are performed in a pretty straight-forward manner, with Stanko and Anthimos exchanging licks and improvising on top of a steady rhythm section work. Hardcore Free Jazz / avant-garde enthusiasts might find this music "strange" and simplistic, but honestly it is far from being trivial at any point. It is simply different, and Stanko, as an artist, should be without doubt allowed some slack to move forward and change direction, same as Miles DavisFind albums by this artist and others did. His trumpet playing is a s virtuosic as always, and nothing beats Stanko playing a ballad – absolutely nothing! At the time of its release the album was received coldly and reluctantly by most of the local critics, who used the weathered "going commercial" arguments, without truly understanding the nature of the change. In retrospect this album is a valuable addition to Stankoīs musical heritage, which has very few competitors. Brilliant stuff!

TOMASZ STANKO ~ A I J
POLONIA 103 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1982 Released: 1997

This magnificent album by Polish trumpeter / composer Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist includes the rest of the music recorded at the same session, which produced the superb "Music 81Find albums with this title" album. As with all great and prophetic Jazz Masters, Stankoīs music was evolving constantly and by the time this session was recorded in 1982, he was ready to leave behind the avant-garde / Free Jazz / experimental music, which dominated his first period (late 1960s to late 1970s) and gradually move forward towards new things, which would include mostly Jazz-Rock Fusion and Jazz-Electronic experiments, which of course were all as advanced and adventurous as anything else he made earlier. That second period, which lasted roughly the whole decade of the 1980s, is well documented by the albums released during that time, each and every one of them indisputably a masterpiece in retrospect. This interim session between Stankoīs first and second period is especially interesting, as in many respects it both summarizes the first period and clearly leads the way towards the next. The music is surprisingly "straight-forward" (if such description is at all possible in connection with Stankoīs music) and conventional. Performed by a classic quartet with pianist Slawomir KulpowiczFind albums by this artist, bassist Witold RekFind albums by this artist and the fabulous drummer Czeslaw BartkowskiFind albums by this artist, it moves stylistically somewhere between John ColtraneFind albums by this artistīs early 1960īs quartet and Miles DavisFind albums by this artist second quintet, mixing clear melody lines with complex improvisations. The performances are absolutely stellar, with Stankoīs trumpet shredding the air, beautiful and extremely sensitive piano work a la McCoy TynerFind albums by this artist, strong and steady bass and virtuosic drumming, which not only drives the music forward but also adds endless flamboyant ornamentations. Of course in retrospect we know now that Stanko was to return to a similar format a decade and so later with his superb quartet, but at the time this music was completely unprecedented on the Polish scene. There are very few Jazz albums worldwide, which come close to the perfection and vision of the music herein, therefore this is definitely an absolute must for any serious Jazz connoisseur, Polish Jazz collector and anybody with a pair of open ears. Beyond essential!

TOMASZ STANKO ~ WOLNOSC W SIERPNIU
FIRE 001 (Barcode: 5907587611009) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2005 Released: 2005

This magnificent album by Polish trumpeter / composer Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist includes the music commissioned by the Warsaw Rising Museum, which accompanies the permanent exhibition. The heroic and tragic struggle to free the Polish Capital from the Nazi occupation in August of 1944 is to this very day a pivotal episode of modern Polish history, in many respects unresolved (morally and politically) to this very day. The bold decision to bestow the task of composing the music played at the museum upon Polandīs most distinguished Jazz composer is surely unusual and highly commendable. Stanko, of course, had little trouble to produce a masterpiece, which consists of a six-piece suite for Jazz combo and string orchestra. The participants are all Polish Jazz heroes, starting with the members of Stankoīs regular quartet at the time: pianist Marcin WasilewskiFind albums by this artist, bassist Slawomir KurkiewiczFind albums by this artist and drummer Michal MiskiewiczFind albums by this artist. Additional players include Stankoīs veteran partners: keyboardist Janusz SkowronFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Tomasz SzukalskiFind albums by this artist and guitarist Antymos ApostolisFind albums by this artist (who plays only percussion here). Another old friend, keyboardist Wojciech KarolakFind albums by this artist, is responsible for the string orchestra arrangements, played by the Polish Radio String Orchestra. The music, as always with Stanko, is absolutely breathtaking, from start to finish, performed brilliantly by all the musicians involved. Stankoīs trumpet, with its distinctive and unique sound, soars vigorously and caresses gently, both with the same magic quality only he seems to be able to produce. Overall, this is definitely one of the finest Stankoīs later period albums and an essential peace of European Jazz. An absolute must!
Side Note: Itīs a great pity that this album as now out of print and absolutely impossible to find. A repress is desperately in order!

TRIO SHALVA ~ RIDING ALONE
PRIVATE EDITION (Barcode: 884501440813) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2011

Trio Shalva consists of three Israeli Jazz musicians living in the US: pianist Assaf GleiznerFind albums by this artist, guitarist Koby HayonFind albums by this artist and drummer Nadav Snir ZelnikerFind albums by this artist. This is their debut recording as a trio, presenting a tribute to Israeli music, which is an integral part of their cultural heritage. Of the nine tracks present on the album, six are Israeli standards / evergreens and three are originals (two by Hayon and the title track by Gleizner). In contrast to Hayon´s excellent debut album "GeminiFind albums with this title" released a year earlier, on this album he plays mostly bass guitar (with a few acoustic guitar parts), which basically makes Trio Shalva a piano trio with the pianist naturally being the main soloist. But the trio works as a close-knit unit with a lot of mutual respect, listening and complimenting each other. The approach is basically mellow, with emphasis on melody, but the improvisations are interesting and the level of musicianship excellent at all times. Most importantly they manage to avoid being trivial, which is always the greatest danger, when playing standards. The album is appealing both to relatively inexperienced Jazz listeners, who can follow the melodic lines, and the connoisseurs, who can enjoy the sophisticated arrangement and the intricate tricks of the trade. The sound and recording quality are also excellent. Overall this is a very aesthetically pleasing album, which only gets better with repeated listening. Warmly recommended!

PIOTR ORZECHOWSKI ~ PIANOHOOLIGAN
PRIVATE EDITION ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2011

Polish pianist / composer Piotr OrzechowskiFind albums by this artist is at the moment the youngest Polish Jazz piano star. Tenderly aged 21 he already has an impressive CV, which many much older musicians could envy, which includes winning several competitions both as instrumentalist and composer. Classically trained, he discovered Jazz as a teenager and has been active on the Jazz scene since. His nickname "Pianohooligan" is quite appropriate for his disregard of music conventions, which he does not hesitate to break at every possible occasion. This incredible debut demo recording, presents him both as a pianist and composer, in the most difficult setting as a solo performer. The music included starts with a prelude by Johann Sebastian BachFind albums by this artist, continues with an eight-part scherzo composed by Orzechowski, followed by a Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist tune and finally concludes with a fugue by Dmitri ShostakovichFind albums by this artist. This strange collage of musical pieces makes perfect sense when performed by Orzechowski, even though at the first glance one might wonder what all this music has in common. His incredible virtuosity and individuality, as well as his great sense of melody, harmony and rhythm manage to produce a coherent musical experience, which brigs the listener many moments of bliss and supreme musical joy. The attempt to fuse Classical music and Jazz in this case works beautifully, proving yet again that great music is cross-genre and universally aesthetically perfect. The treatment of the Classical pieces is genuinely sublime and the original music is masterfully crafted. Overall it is a great album from start to finish and honestly quite scary, considering the age of its creator. For people of such talent sky is the only limit!

JAN JARCZYK / JOHN STETCH ~ SMOKED PIANOS
GAD 002 (Barcode: 5901549197013) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2007 Released: 2011

Polish pianist / composer Jan JarczykFind albums by this artist, who lives in the US & Canada since the late 1970s, is fondly remembered as member of the original Zbigniew SeifertFind albums by this artist quartet, where he played alongside Seifert in the late 1960s / early 1970s, contributing some of his compositions to the quartet´s repertoire. The wonderful early recordings by the Seifert quartet ("NoraFind albums with this title") were released on the same GadFind albums on this label label, which also released this album. Jarczyk continued his Jazz career in the US & Canada as educator, first at the Berklee Collage of Music in Boston and later at McGill University in Montreal. He also continued to perform and release Jazz albums. Jarczyk met Canadian (of Ukrainian origin) pianist / composer John StetchFind albums by this artist twenty years prior to this recording, when Stetch was one of his students. He invited Stetch to play with him a series of concerts in a piano duet setting. These concerts, which were organized to celebrate Jarczyk´s 60th birthday, were recorded and this album now brings these recordings to a wider audience. Of the seven duets included here three were composed by Jarczyk, one by Stetch, one co-composed by the two players and two are standards. The material presents a versatile setting, from ballads to up-tempo compositions, which allows the players to stretch out and exchange licks along the way. The deep empathy, understanding and mutual respect between the two musicians is obvious and plays a major role in the overall music-making / love-making ambience. Although both players are clearly highly talent performers, the duo is stronger that the sum of its individual parts. Stylistically the music moves between straight-forward melodic modern Jazz to mostly improvised stretches, so there are no dull moments here. For piano lovers, this is heavenly stuff, well worth having and of course returning to. Warmly recommended!

Recorded: 2009 Released: 2009

This is the debut recording as a leader by Israeli drummer / composer Ziv RavitzFind albums by this artist, who is one of several Israeli Jazz musicians, which managed to earn respect and admiration on the worldwide scene and become a highly sought after studio figure. His superb ability to play in highly versatile settings as well as his unusual open-mindedness and virtuoso performances justify his reputation completely. His numerous recordings with some of the Jazz most well known names, both in Europe and the US, are all excellent examples of his great talent. His drumming is perhaps the best ever synthesis of the Jazz tradition and the Middle East rhythmic heritage. This wonderful album presents Ravitz in an intimate setting with just two musicians: pianist Omer KleinFind albums by this artist and trumpeter Avishai CohenFind albums by this artist. Of the eleven tracks on the album, ten are Ravitz original and one is an Israeli standard. A female vocalist (Mika HaryFind albums by this artist) guests on the last track. The music is excellent from start to finish, as are the performances. Strongly influenced by his Israeli musical heritage, as the title suggests, Ravitz unwinds his melodies emphasizing the rhythmic patterns, which are absolutely thrilling and fascinating. The music is very subtle, presented in duo or trio format, which enables the listener to hear every note and leaves no margin for error. In retrospect this is one of the best Israeli Jazz albums recorded in the first decade of the 21st Century, which sadly slipped unnoticed under the radar, but it is not to late to discover it now – and discovering it is highly recommended for any connoisseur of great Jazz. WOJTEK JACHNA / JACEK BUHL ~ NIEDOKONCZONE KSIAZKI
AUDIO TONG 14 (Barcode: 859706101586) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2011

This wonderful album by the Polish duo: trumpeter Wojtek JachnaFind albums by this artist and drummer Jacek BuhlFind albums by this artist, is a superb example of how Jazz reinvents itself and updates itself constantly thanks to new and talented musicians. Of course the concept of the trumpet-drums duet in Jazz is not completely unusual, with the legendary Don CherryFind albums by this artist / Ed BlackwellFind albums by this artist album "MuFind albums with this title" being an early example. Originally released in 1969 that double LP was a revolutionary step forward, redefining and expanding the genreīs borders. In the course of history several other noticeable trumpet-drums duet albums were also recorded. This album, as mentioned above, updates this concept thanks to the new technology available today, which allows electronically generated ambient vistas to be incorporated into some of the tracks, but basically itīs up to the two players to create the substance. The music, although mostly improvised and close to the Free Jazz movement, has a strong melodic content and atmospheric / ambient feel about it, which is characteristic of movie soundtracks. Buhlīs ability to play the drums as a melodic instrument (as opposed to a purely rhythmic one) is truly remarkable. His extended solo passages never cease to amaze as far as inventiveness and sensitivity are concerned. Jachnaīs minimalism, combined with his complete command of his instrument is highly effective and artistically sublime. Their duets are wonderful example of two musicians listening to each other at all times, giving up their egos in order to achieve a fusion of their powers and a higher level of unity. This is definitely one of the most interesting Polish Jazz albums Iīve come across lately and I canīt imagine any true Jazz enthusiast not finding this album worthy of their attention. Great stuff!

IDO BUKELMAN ~ THE DOOR

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2011

This is the second solo recording by Israeli guitarist / composer Ido BukelmanFind albums by this artist, one of the most prolific musicians on the local Free Jazz / Improvised Music scene. In contrast to his ensemble recordings or those with the EFTFind albums by this artist trio, where he mostly plays electric guitar, on his solo albums Bukelman opts for the acoustic guitar, adding also banjo and some percussion on this one. Of the eleven tracks on this album, all composed by him, the last six are connected into a suite, which gives the album its title. In comparison to his previous solo album ("SoloFind albums with this title"), recorded just a few months earlier, this album is much more relaxed and "well behaved", with clear melodic content popping out between and behind the freely improvised passages. Of course this is still very much Improvised Music, very personal and complex, which presents quite a challenge to the listener, but the overall effect of this album is definitely less stressful and estranging. With four albums recorded and released in less than a year Bukelman emerges as a major talent of the local scene, one that deserves to be followed carefully, open-mindedly and openheartedly as a source of some serious musical experiences. Hopefully there will be an audience open-minded enough to enjoy and appreciate this music.

EHRAN ELISHA / HAROLD RUBIN / HAIM ELISHA ~ EAST OF JAFFA
OUTNOW 006 (Barcode: 7290011216009) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2011

This brilliant album is a document of a completely improvised recording session involving three great musicians: drummer / composer Ehran ElishaFind albums by this artist, legendary clarinetist / composer Harold RubinFind albums by this artist and Ehranīs father pianist Haim ElishaFind albums by this artist. The music consists of a series of trio and duo spontaneous improvisations, with Rubin and his clarinet strongly in the limelight as the most dazzling musical personality in the room. After all Rubin is almost singlehandedly responsible for the existence of the Israeli Free Jazz / Improvised Music scene and his genius is unparalleled on the worldwide scale. This is a superb example of such music at its best, which is characterized by the overall feeling that the music was carefully arranged and rehearsed before the recording, where in fact if wasnīt at all. Rubin leads the way by suggesting his charming melody lines, which are then masterly supported by Ehranīs sensitive drumming and Haimīs delicate piano phrases. His ability to weave these incredible melodies out of thin air, which are full of the sadness and joy of Jewish spiritual music, Middle Eastern twists and turns and Rubinīs own inventions is always absolutely stunning, even for someone like myself, who has experienced it firsthand for almost thirty years now. The fact that Rubin is not widely known as one of the greatest Jazz musicians that ever walked on this planet is an absolute crime of ignorance. This album might as well serve as a textbook example of what Free Jazz / Improvised Music is all about: individual genius, the ability to combine individuality into group unity, telepathic exchange of ideas on the fly, mutual respect and empathy and a bit of divine intervention, which makes it all happen at a certain place at a certain time. We mere mortals should be only grateful that the music was captured for posterity, for us to enjoy. An absolute must!

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2011

This is the debut solo recording by Israeli guitarist / composer Ido BukelmanFind albums by this artist, one of the most prolific musicians on the local Free Jazz / Improvised Music scene. In contrast to his ensemble recordings or those with the EFTFind albums by this artist trio (also released on the great OutNowFind albums on this label Recording label) where he mostly plays electric guitar, on this album Bukelman opts for the acoustic guitar, except for one track on which he adds electronics. The music is very difficult to describe and belongs to the extreme avant-garde personal statements, which are incredibly difficult to access and assess. If anybody reading this is familiar with the work of the great British guitarist Derek BaileyFind albums by this artist, one of the Godfathers of the Improvised Music movement, then this might be a starting point. This does not mean of course that Bukelman is imitating Baileyīs work, as that would be an oxymoron, but stylistically and sonically the content of this album belongs in the same sphere. Obviously this is a very personal music and the question if it is communicative and transferable to the listener remains open and is largely up to the listener himself. Improvised Music is, after all, a very individual expression of a momentary inspiration. One should of course commend the Artist first for making such individual and unconventional statement and that for bringing it out in the open for others to experience. Hopefully there will be others open-minded enough to enjoy and appreciate this music.

EHRAN ELISHA / ROY CAMPBELL ~ WATCHING CARTOONS WITH EDDIE
OUTNOW 004 (Barcode: 7290011216979) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2008 Released: 2011

This wonderful album by drummer Ehran ElishaFind albums by this artist and trumpeter Roy CampbellFind albums by this artist is a sort of tribute to the early Free Jazz Giants like Don CherryFind albums by this artist, Ed BlackwellFind albums by this artist, Bill DixonFind albums by this artist and others. Elisha and Campbell collaborated and recorded together in the past and their musical dialogue if full of mutual friendship, respect and admiration. All the music on the album is composed or co-composed by them. The title track refers to the fact that Elisha, while being a student and later a friend of the legendary drummer Ed Blackwell, often watched cartoons with the master in order to relax before the lessons. Of course the concept of the drums-trumpet duet in Free Jazz is not completely unusual, with the legendary Ed Blackwell / Don Cherry album "MuFind albums with this title" being an early example. Originally released in 1969 that double LP was a revolutionary step forward, redefining and expanding the genreīs borders. In the course of history several other noticeable drums-trumpet duet albums were also recorded. The idea behind this album is an imaginary double LP project, which embodies a series of imaginary duets between Blackwell and other Free Jazz Giants. Both Elisha and Campbell are already established names on the scene and Free Jazz connoisseurs most probably already came across their work – if not itīs about time to remedy that mistake. Elishaīs ability to play the drums as a melodic instrument (as opposed to a purely rhythmic one) is truly remarkable. His extended solo passages never cease to amaze as far as inventiveness and sensitivity are concerned. Campbellīs minimalism, combined with his complete command of his instrument is highly effective and artistically sublime. Their duets are wonderful example of two musicians listening to each other at all times, giving up their egos in order to achieve a fusion of their powers and a higher level of unity. I canīt imagine any Free Jazz enthusiast not finding this album worthy of their attention. Great stuff!

EFT ~ EFT
OUTNOW 003 (Barcode: 7290011216948) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2011

The Israeli experimental trio EFTFind albums by this artist (Electro Free Trio), which consists of guitarist Ido BukelmanFind albums by this artist, electronics manipulator Daniel DavidovskyFind albums by this artist and drummer Ofer BymelFind albums by this artist, released its debut album recently on the excellent OutNowFind albums on this label label. Probably the most adventurous music ensemble on the local scene, the trio presents a completely unique amalgam of Noise, high power distorted Rock, Jazzy improvisations and a plethora of electronically generated sounds, all these spontaneously created during a process of telepathic musical conversation. Although basically belonging to the Improvised Music genre, the music is somewhat different from the typical IM setting, which usually originates in Jazz, as it is more related to Rock and its experimental area. Of course the nature of such personal and intimate music is often completely impenetrable and remains valid mostly to its creators. The music presented here, although often difficult and definitely nontrivial, manages to be communicative to those, who are ready to make the intellectual effort and open their ears and minds. One must of course commend the courage and determination of these young musicians to create such highly distinctive music, risking alienation and misinterpretation by critics and audiences alike. Itīs great to have such music recorded and released, against all odds, and hopefully in time the circle of connoisseurs able and willing to make an intellectual effort it requires will steadily grow. This is an album definitely worth investigating, especially for those more adventurous listeners out there!

YONI KRETZMER ~ OVERLOOK
OUTNOW 002 (Barcode: 7290011216986) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2009 Released: 2011

Israeli saxophonist / composer Yoni KretzmerFind albums by this artist is one of the most prolific musicians on the local Free Jazz / Improvised Music scene. In addition to his musical activities Kretzmer recently combined forces with two other Israeli musicians (guitarist Ido BukelmanFind albums by this artist and guitarist Yair YonaFind albums by this artist) and together they launched a new Israeli record label, called OutNowFind albums on this label Recordings, dedicated to releasing their own music and other more ambitious and less commercial musical ventures, which otherwise would have very little (if any) chances to see the light of day at all. The label released its first six albums recently, of which this is the second one. Kretzmer, who leads several different ensembles, recorded this album with his quartet, which also includes bass clarinetist Nitai LeviFind albums by this artist, bassist Shai RanFind albums by this artist and drummer Haim PeskoffFind albums by this artist. The music, all composed by Kretzmer, is a prime example of contemporary Free Jazz, which is still very much linked with the Jazz tradition. The musical conversations between the two reedmen / soloists, which are prominent throughout the album, are the basis for extended individual solos. The rhythm session is an essential part of the collective improvisation and continuous stability, although enjoys a fair measure of musical freedom as well. The overall atmosphere of the album harks back to the early heydays of the genre, with Albert AylerFind albums by this artist and Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist spiritually present in the recording studio. The leaderīs virtuosity is plainly evident from the very opening of the album and never ceases to amaze the listener. It is heartwarming to see such level of overall musicality on the local Israeli scene and although many of our musicians share their time between Israel and the European / American scene, they are after all "ours". With such players around, the Israeli Free Jazz / Improvised Music scene is alive and kicking with hardly any inferiority complexes around. This is a superb piece of music, from start to finish and an absolute must to every Israeli Free Jazz connoisseur!

IDO BUKELMAN ~ CRACKED SONG
OUTNOW 001 (Barcode: 7290011216955) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2011

Israeli guitarist / composer Ido BukelmanFind albums by this artist is one of the most prolific musicians on the local Free Jazz / Improvised Music scene. In addition to his musical activities Bukelman recently combined forces with two other Israeli musicians (saxophonist Yoni KretzmerFind albums by this artist and guitarist Yair YonaFind albums by this artist) and together they launched a new Israeli record label, called OutNowFind albums on this label Recordings, dedicated to releasing their own music and other more ambitious and less commercial musical ventures, which otherwise would have very little (if any) chances to see the light of day at all. The label released its first six albums recently, of which this is the first one. Bukelman, who plays both acoustic and electric guitar, records in various settings, which include both solo and ensemble performances. This album finds him as a leader of a quartet, which includes his regular trio members: bassist Assaf HakimiFind albums by this artist and drummer Udi ShlomoFind albums by this artist. Cellist Yuval MesnerFind albums by this artist joins them to form a quartet. The music, all composed by Bukelman, is surprisingly "well behaved" relatively to a Free Jazz setting, with clear melody lines stated throughout the improvisations. Although thereīs plenty of freedom for the musicians to express their personal statements, the compositions are noticeably structured, which of course makes the music more accessible to a less experienced listener. In spite its free-spirit character, this music is far from being alienated from the Jazz tradition, which is one of its merits. The level of performances, interplay and personal statements is truly excellent throughout. Bukelmanīs electric guitar sometimes ventures into Jazz-Rock territory with a slight scent of the free side of John McLaughlin, which I mean as a compliment considering my well known sympathy towards McLaughlin artistry. Mesnerīs cello, excellent as always, paints a calmer atmospheric background and the rhythm section makes a superb effort to glue everything together, which is successful indeed. Altogether this is a first rate Free Jazz album, which most "regular" Jazz enthusiasts should enjoy as well. This level of musicianship, personal courage and dedication to the music is a heartwarming and one can hope that the future of noncommercial and artistic music in Israel has a new perspective in the hands of a new generation, which will take it further. This is brilliant stuff, not to be missed!

LIGHT COORPORATION ~ RARE DIALECT
RER ARS2 ~ POLAND ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2011

This debut album by Polish ensemble Light CoorporationFind albums by this artist is a stunning revelation of musical genius present among the new generation of European musicians. Led by guitarist / composer Mariusz SobanskiFind albums by this artist, who composed all the music, the ensemble also includes saxophonists Michal FetlerFind albums by this artist (baritone and alto) and Michal PijewskiFind albums by this artist (tenor), violinist Robert BielakFind albums by this artist, bassist Tom StrukFind albums by this artist (fretless bass) and drummer Milosh KrauzFind albums by this artist. Keyboardist Marcin SzczesnyFind albums by this artist sits in as a guest musician. The music is a completely unique brand of RIO / avant-garde Prog, which is deeply rooted in the beginning of the movement (Henry CowFind albums by this artist) but successfully updated to contemporary standards, both sonically and conceptually. Superbly matched and combined acoustic sounds of the reeds and electronic distortion from the guitar and keyboards, hypnotic rhythmic patters (similar to the Zeuhl movement) and dark melodic vistas create an overwhelming effect, which is completely fresh and unparalleled. Considering the fact that these are very young individuals and this is their debut recording one must wander about the possibilities of these gifted musicians in the future. No wander the prestigious ReR label released this album worldwide, especially since this kind of material suits their catalogue as a glove. On the bandīs site we can learn that their performances are usually accompanied by screening of video material, which seems highly appropriate, as this music has a very strong atmospheric / ambient content as well, which is usually ideal to be combined with visual material. But listening "only" to the music is also an immensely powerful and invigorating experience of rare magnificence and depth. I listened to the album for three consecutive times, being completely enchanted by it. Iīm pretty sure the same will happen to most of the listeners. Of course such music requires repeated listening sessions to be discovered and uncovered in depth – as all great music does. It is rather obvious that this music is well beyond being recommended – it would (literally) be a crime if any serious music lover, regardless is heīs a Prog or Jazz or RIO or Zeuhl fan if he was to miss this album! Such gems are so rare, that we must make everything in our power to make the world listen, especially since I canīt recall hearing such great music in a very long time! This is a brilliant piece of intelligent music - chapeau Mariusz & co.
