ADVENT ~ CANTUS FIRMUS
PRIVATE EDITION (Barcode: 702987024726) ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1992 - 2006 Released: 2006

Every time an album like Cantus FirmusFind albums with this title by AdventFind albums by this artist lands in my lap a lot of questions pop up immediately. Since I consider myself quite knowledgeable in all matters Prog, the most intriguing one being “How came I’ve not heard about this band earlier, considering this is their 2nd album?” Mind you this happens very rarely and even more so when the album in question is as phenomenal as this one, almost unbelievably phenomenal. Let me start with a bold statement here: “This is one of the best Prog albums ever made!” I know many of my readers at this point start shrugging and say: “Here he goes again”. Let me try and explain (to the best of my ability) why I think this statement is 100 % true. Since this album was recorded in the 2000’s, the musicians had the benefit of perception of the Progressive Rock’s vast tradition accumulated during the genre’s 30+ years of history, thus being able to incorporate this insight in their creation. I emphasize the role of perception here (either conscious or subconscious) in contrast to an attempt to imitate, which of course makes all the difference. This album creates a perfect amalgam of the entire genre’s tradition up to that point (I mean the mainstream of the tradition centered on Symphonic Prog) and is in a sense a concise summary of the genre’s essence. In other words when asked (for the millionth time) “What is Prog?” I can now calmly say: “Listen to this album – everything you need to know about Prog is there.” Of course some influences on this music are immediately more obvious than others, the main one being Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist. Starting with the a cappella opening tune and the use of muliti-layered vocal harmonies throughout the album, the quirky rhythm changes and the devilishly clever concatenation of short themes into a continuous musical epic (like in the central 18+ minutes long tour de force piece here). Another thing is that in every respect (i.e. stylistically, sonically, conceptually, etc.) this album really belongs in the 1970’s. Not that is sounds dated (God forbid), but the fact that it was made in the 2000’s makes this entire venture a true miracle. Life is not fair of course, so just imagine this album released with Gentle Giant on the cover and I can assure you that it would have been considered one of the (if not the) best GG releases. Well, it has Advent on the cover, which should make no difference, but unfortunately it does. The only solace can be found in the fact that if one wishes to imagine how GG would have sounded in the 2000’s, all one has to do is to listen to this album. If you are a food connoisseur, this album is a French meal with a dash of YesFind albums by this artist as a starter, great Emerson, Lake & PalmerFind albums by this artist soup with main course a la Gentle Giant and a GenesisFind albums by this artist dessert. Add to this a vintage red vine full of talent, imagination, creativity and instrumental perfection and you get a perfect Prog meal called “Cantus Firmus”. A bit about Advent: They are an American quartet with a guitarist, two brothers who play keyboards and a drummer. One of the brothers is the lead vocalist and the other supplies the vocal harmonies (makes perfect sense). The double keyboards provide a rich, orchestral sound which plenty of opportunities to insert a multitude of interesting ditties, which require repetitive listening in order to be noticed and appreciated. The album includes bonus material recorded for but not included on the band’s debut release, which is every bit as strong as the rest of the album. There is no way to finish this but with another (shouted) question: “Where (and when) is the next album?!!!” Absolutely essential.

Recorded: 1996 Released: 1996

4th album by the extraordinary Hungarian group After CryingFind albums by this artist. It takes about 5 seconds to realize this is another masterpiece when you hear the choir opening this epic. Deeply involving and breathtaking music, which must be heard. All members of the group get ample opportunity to display their virtuosity here, with long instrumental passages and improvised sections. The compositions are all memorable and although complex, they flow naturally. What an experience!

AKINETÓN RETARD ~ 21 CANAPÉS
MYLODON 014 (Barcode: 4011222210258) ~ CHILE ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1998 - 2003 Released: 2003

3rd album by the sensational Prog / RIO band from Chile Akinetón RetardFind albums by this artist. Quite an unusual album (even for them) as it collects (as the title suggests) 21 short pieces of music, most between 1 and 2 minutes long, which were originally written as background music for 3 theatre performances staged in 1998, 1999 and 2003. It is not stated on the album if the music was recorded at these respective dates (I assume so) or is a re-recording of all these pieces done in 2003 (there is one additional piece dated 2000). Regardless of this little confusion, the music is overall absolutely brilliant, as is everything else they ever recorded. The jazz undertones created by the two sax players in the group and the unusual melody lines take the listener to uncharted territory, which is always a good thing. The earlier influences of King CrimsonFind albums by this artist and Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist are less evident here, which means the group arrived at a point where they have their own unique tonal language well in place. The album differs also from their other output by being more acoustic (using guest musicians playing violin and cello or even vocals for example) and atmospheric at times, which is surely a result of the music being written for theatre. If one disregards all the background information, this album can be regarded as a beautiful example of contemporary “minimal music”, as good as anything created earlier in this genre. Essentially brilliant!

AKINETÓN RETARD ~ AKRANANIA
MYLODON 004/ ROCK SYMPHONY 072 (Barcode: 7898217280727) ~ CHILE ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2001 Released: 2001

2nd album by the Chilean Avant-Prog / RIO band Akinetón RetardFind albums by this artist and a formidable successor to their breathtaking debut album. There is no doubt about Akinetón Retard being one of the most interesting new bands on the Prog / RIO scene and their extraordinary music bringing a hurricane of fresh ideas and approaches. It is extremely difficult to describe their music in words – it is often described as something in between Johnn ColtraneFind albums by this artist and Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist, which is one way of looking at it. The band is a sextet and it includes two saxophonists, which contribute the jazzy aspects. The rest of the band (guitar, bass, drums and percussion) is the rocky counterpart, but the music is of course neither jazz nor rock, as with most RIO bands. The compositions are devilishly complex and quirky, switching tempos and rhythms at breathtaking paste. Rather than trying to describe this music in more detail, let me just say this is essential stuff for anybody who likes adventurous and challenging music.

ALLMAN BROTHERS ~ EAT A PEACH (DELUXE EDITION)
MERCURY 987784 (Barcode: 602498778494) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2006

4th album by Allman BrothersFind albums by this artist and the first release following Duane AllmanFind albums by this artist`s tragic death. Originally released as a double LP, it contains 4 different sessions: studio recordings completed while Duane was still alive, studio recordings completed by the band without Duane, live recordings at the Fillmore East, recorded in March 1971 and included also on the Deluxe edition of the Fillmore East album and finally live recordings at Fillmore East, recorded in June 1971, which was Duane’s last live recording. In retrospect it is a magnificent album, full of brilliant performances and vital energy with a drop of bitter sadness of course. This is classic stuff, which deserves a permanent position in any decent music library. The new exquisite edition includes the entire June 1971 Fillmore East concert, released here for the first time. As the Allmans were first a foremost a live band, this new material is, as usual, a gold mine of musical thrills. Essential!

ALLMAN BROTHERS ~ LIVE AT THE ATLANTA INTERNATIONAL POP FESTIVAL
EPIC 510100 (Barcode: 5099751010029) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded just a few months (July 1970) before the legendary Fillmore gig, this is the Allman Brothers at the peak of their powers, playing their hearts out. Amazingly these two sets remained unreleased for such a long time, as in retrospect they rival the legendary Fillmore recordings both in sound and material quality. As a bonus, the almost half hour long Mountain Jam features a third guitarist - one Johnny Winter - which turnes this piece into an anthem of 1970`s guitar rock at its best. Absolutely essential not only for Allmans` fans, but in memoriam of the great times that are gone forever!

NEIL ARDLEY ~ MIKE TAYLOR REMEMBERED
DUSK FIRE 103 (Barcode: 5065001032011) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1973 Released: 2007

The short and tragic life of pianist / composer Mike TaylorFind albums by this artist, an eccentric genius fallen victim to mental illness / drug abuse, which proved self-destructive and led to his death at the age of 29, is surely worthy a script adaptation for a Martin ScorseseFind albums by this artist movie. Sometimes referred to as “the Syd BarrettFind albums by this artist of British Jazz”, Taylor had close ties with a relatively small group of musicians, like Graham BondFind albums by this artist and the members of his Graham Bond OrganizationFind albums by this artist, which included Jack BruceFind albums by this artist and Ginger BakerFind albums by this artist – soon to be founders of CreamFind albums by this artist. Many people will be surprised to learn that three songs co-written by Ginger and Mike appear on Cream’s Wheels Of FireFind albums with this title album (“Pressed Rat And Warthog”, “Those Were The Days” and “Passing The Time”). Another one of his superb songs – “Jumping Off The Sun” – was recorded by ColosseumFind albums by this artist and appears on several of their albums. Although known intimately by very few people at the time, the legend lives on and periodically the flame of interest is rekindled among the modern British Jazz fans, like in the case of reissue of his only two existing recordings: PendulumFind albums with this title and TrioFind albums with this title. Even fewer people are aware of the spectacular tribute album recorded by Taylor’s musician friends three years after his death. Recorded under the musical direction of another British Jazz legendary figure, composer / arranger / bandleader Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist, who discovered Taylor’s genius immediately and scored some of his compositions for the New Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist when Taylor was still alive. Unfortunately the concert, which was to feature NJO and Mike’s trio never materialized, since Taylor (already very ill at the time) simply missed the gig. Nevertheless Ardley continued to use Taylor’s music as part of the regular NJO repertoire and suggested to Denis PrestonFind albums by this artist, owner of the legendary Lansdowne Studios in London, where most of the pivotal modern British Jazz was recorded, to produce a tribute album to Mike Taylor’s musical genius. Preston, who recorded the two Taylor albums, needed no persuasion and funded the complex and costly project with no hesitation, considering it a most appropriate gesture. Ardley assembled a group of 20 musicians to record this project, sharing the scoring of the music for a large ensemble with others, who were close to Taylor and new him well, like Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist and Dave GellyFind albums by this artist. One of the tracks is based on a previously unreleased Taylor quartet recording, with the ensemble overdubbed on top of the original recording, which makes Taylor’s participation in this project almost “in person” as well as “in spirit”. The list of the participating musicians reads like the who’s who of modern British Jazz and includes among others: Ian CarrFind albums by this artist and Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist on trumpet, Chris PyneFind albums by this artist and David HorlerFind albums by this artist on trombone, Ray WarleighFind albums by this artist and Stan SulzmannFind albums by this artist on saxophone, Peter LemerFind albums by this artist and Alan BranscombeFind albums by this artist on piano, Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist and Ron MathewsonFind albums by this artist on bass, Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist on drums and of course the divine Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist on vocals. I can’t think of a more appropriate tribute than this one, full of love, dedication and music genius by all the people involved. Considering the fact that this album combines the genius of Taylor’s Jazz composition with the genius of Ardley’s Jazz scoring / arranging, we get (in mathematical terms) a genius squared result – a rare event indeed. Recommending this album would be somewhat similar to recommending someone to read some Joyce or see a van Gogh – completely superfluous. I’m sure you get the drift by now!

NEIL ARDLEY / IAN CARR / MICHAEL GIBBS / STAN TRACEY ~ WILL POWER
VOCALION 8412 (Barcode: 765387841225) ~ UK ~ Jazz

This stunningly beautiful album managed to stay on the top of my personal list for over 30 years now and I love it as much as I did the first time I heard it. It simply represents all the beauty, sophistication and intellectual quality of the British Jazz of the late 1960s / 1970s, perhaps more accurately and more concisely than any other one album. It documents a concert performed at London’s Southwark Cathedral, one of the many events dedicated to Shakespeare’s tercentenary celebrations, and presents four major works written by four great British Jazz composers: Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist, Ian CarrFind albums by this artist, Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist and Stan TraceyFind albums by this artist, dedicated to Shakespeare’s genius. The list of performers certainly resembles the “Who’s Who” of British Jazz at the time and includes: Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist and Pepi LemerFind albums by this artist – vocals, Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist – trumpet, Tony CoeFind albums by this artist – reeds, Paul BuckmasterFind albums by this artist and Colin WalkerFind albums by this artist – cello, Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist, John TaylorFind albums by this artist and Stan Tracey – keyboards, Ron MathewsonFind albums by this artist – bass, Tony LevinFind albums by this artist – drums and Trevor TomkinsFind albums by this artist – percussion. All the lengthy suites, although quite different from each other, are majestic and respectful to the great poet’s legacy, often touching on Elizabethan era motifs, even if ever so slightly. The ambience of the Cathedral adds to the overall effect and the magic of that performance if caught forever by this extraordinary recording. Everything that is so great about Jazz – composition, arrangement and performance – is unified here to produce that magical moment, which can never be repeated. I can’t imagine anybody not liking this, and although it’s by far no easy listening, the immediate magnanimity of this music is so apparent that repeated listening could only deepen the experience. Beyond essential!

GORDON BECK ~ EXPERIMENTS WITH POPS
ART OF LIFE 1001 (Barcode: 804640100126) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1967 Released: 2001

Pianist / composer Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist is one of the true forefathers of modern British and European Jazz; a pioneer and revolutionary in every sense and a giant musician, who managed to free himself from the boundaries imposed by the American Jazz tradition and take the music a step further to a new sphere. What is even more remarkable and amazing is the fact that in contrast to most British and European musicians, who took their emancipation from the rigors of the past towards Free Jazz and Improvised Music, Beck remained firmly within the seemingly “mainstream” form, playing melodically and in strict time, and yet so much “out there” that for people who are able to hear the difference it’s truly staggering. Beck first came to prominence when he joined the group led by British Jazz legend Tubby HayesFind albums by this artist in 1962 and remained with him for several years as his regular pianist, performing and recording some of the most remarkable albums in the British Jazz history. Since 1967 Beck started to record as a leader and his trio became the “house band” of the famous Ronnie ScottFind albums by this artist’s London club. By the end of the 1960s he took part in the development of the British Jazz-Rock Fusion, playing with Phil WoodsFind albums by this artist in the European Rhythm MachineFind albums by this artist and later with NucleusFind albums by this artist. He became increasingly involved with other musicians from the European scene, especially with many French Jazz players (an association that thrives to these very days). His extensive discography accumulated over the years, both as leader and sideman, is a formidable body of work, which stands out as one of the most consistently excellent and creative. This album was Beck’s second (out of three) release on the tiny independent Major MinorFind albums on this label label, which in time became one of the most sought after British Jazz collector’s items. For the recording Beck expanded his trio (Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist – bass and Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist – drums) to a quartet, with the addition of no other that guitarist John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, known at the time as “Johnny”. Apart from the fact that this is one of the very few early McLaughlin recordings, and therefore of immense historical value, the entire quartet is probably one of the strongest and most extraordinary European ensembles, pioneering the European approach of collective playing. McLaughlin’s brilliant arpeggios, Oxley’s prophetic time keeping away from time, Clyne’s innovative bass explorations and Beck’s flights all over the keyboard collectively create an new amalgam of sounds, taking the music to a new dimension, previously unexplored. How ironic, considering that the material consists entirely from Pop songs popular at the time (hence the album’s title), but in the hands of these players the music becomes truly experimental, as promised by the album’s title. The album’s producer Ray HorricksFind albums by this artist writes in the original liner notes: “This could be the most creative Jazz quartet album ever recorded in Europe… previous quartet recordings in London, or on the Continent, and including the best, have consisted of a rhythm section accompanying a leading soloist; whereas this one features a genuine collective development along lines which no other group, except Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist’s in America, has yet proceeded”. How perceptive and prophetic… Kudos to Paul KohlerFind albums by this artist of Art Of LifeFind albums on this label Records for bringing this timeless masterpiece back to circulation. This music, 40 years after it was recorded, sounds better and more exciting than most of what one hears in contemporary Jazz. Absolutely essential!

GORDON BECK ~ GYROSCOPE
ART OF LIFE 1003 (Barcode: 804640100324) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1968 Released: 2002

Pianist / composer Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist, one of the true forefathers of modern British and European Jazz, has been a source of inspiration and musical joy to Jazz connoisseurs since the 1960s. His formidable technique and more importantly overwhelming musicality are completely unique and unrivaled. This, his 4th recording as a leader, deserves a special notice for many reasons. Stylistically it is somewhat atypical to Beck’s usual output, as it marks his exploration of “free form” Jazz, which was enjoying a period of unparalleled prosperity in Britain at the time this album was recorded, with momentous recordings by other British piano giants like Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist, Keith TippettFind albums by this artist and others. However, in Beck’s case the “free form” remains somewhat tamed by his immense love of melody, thus creating one of the most formidable examples of early European “free form”, which even the most conservative Jazz listener can easily savor. This is Beck’s genius, but the credit must also go to his two partners: bassist Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist. The trio plays here in complete unity, with telepathic interplay and cohesiveness. Clyne is a monster player, incredibly melodic and with a sublime sense of rhythm and Oxley is a complete genius, the most intelligent and technically proficient drummer to come out of the British Isles. This is a marvelous opportunity to hear Oxley’s work at the time he was still playing “time”, although of course in his very special way of doing so, with the “time” being felt rather that actually played, since he is all over his kit doing stuff that is not recommended to be tried at home. This album was originally released on the tiny MorganFind albums on this label Records (owned by the famous Morgan Recording Studios in London) and disappeared from the shelves soon after, becoming one of the British Jazz most sought after collector’s items. The reissue on Art Of LifeFind albums on this label brings back to life a masterpiece of immense importance, which is an essential piece of the complex musical puzzle created in Britain by the end of the 1960s. I can’t imagine any serious British / European Jazz fan not having this momentous recording in their collection. Beyond essential!

BEE GEES ~ ODESSA (EXPANDED EDITION)
REPRISE 79886 (Barcode: 081227988661) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1969 Released: 2009

This magnificent box set includes the material recorded for the Bee GeesFind albums by this artist magnum opus "OdessaFind albums with this title", their 4th album recorded since their return to Britain and definitely their most ambitious effort ever. Originally released as a double LP, the album included a set of highly inspired compositions, lushly orchestrated and beautifully produced. Magnificent melodies, which were always the strength of the group, combined with heavy Psychedelic influences and of course their stunning vocal harmonies make this one of the most perfect Pop / Rock and even Prog works of the late 1960s. Unfortunately the group entered a period of personal hiatus following the recording of the album, creating negative publicity, which resulted in poor sales and lack of exposure to this album, which of course deserved much better. It also marks the end of the first period of the group´s career, which would be followed by several years of soul searching, with poor musical results, and eventually the complete downfall into the mindless disco music. Nevertheless in proper historic perspective the band´s 1960s output is the pinnacle of musical perfection and imagination, with this album being the crown jewel. Lavishly packaged in a velvet covered box, the 3 CDs include the stereo and mono mix of the original album and a whole CD of bonus material with alternate versions, outtake and other previously unreleased material. This is an instant collectors´ item and a wonderful testimony of the most inspired period in the music history. Essential listening!

SÉRGIO BENCHIMOL ~ A DROP IN THE OCEAN - AN OCEAN IN A DROP
PRIVATE EDITION ~ BRAZIL ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2004 Released: 2004

Once in a blue moon a completely anonymous album drops in my lap, leaving me completely awestruck. This is one of those rare and absolutely wonderful albums that renew my inspiration and my eternal quest for that kind of music. Brazilian multi-instrumentalist and composer Sérgio BenchimolFind albums by this artist (obviously Jewish with a Jarmulka on his head) presents here a suite of outrageous beauty, which mixes Prog, Jazz, World Music and Classical motifs, fascinating and uplifting from the first note played to the very last. The music is melodic and moves smoothly between one theme to another, with frequent rhythm changes and wonderful instrumental arrangements. Benchimol collected a great cast of musicians to play with him on the album, each and every one contributing their magic to the total result. COLUMBIA 499823 (Barcode: 5099749982321) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1968 Released: 2000

1st album from 1968 by this magnificent US group led by Al Kooper. A mixture of blues, psychedelia, rock and jazz, all beautifuly arranged and played, and of course some heartbreaking tunes - all together probably one of the most perfect albums of all times. The term `classic` is somewhat not strong enough for this. This album is the building foundation for an entire generation of music to follow.

JAN BOKSZCZANIN ~ KOMEDA INSPIRATIONS
ARMS 09 (Barcode: 5900238791082) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2010

This magnificent album is an astonishing tribute to the music of the great Polish composer Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist, the Godfather of Polish Jazz and one of the most important figures of the European Jazz scene. Organist Jan BokszczaninFind albums by this artist, born in Russia and living in Poland, famous for his Church Organ performances and recordings of Classical Music, undertakes here an unprecedented project of presenting the music of Komeda in a completely new light, transposing it into contemporary Chamber-Jazz, quite afar from it´s Jazz origins. Of course Komeda´s music is often played by Jazz musicians (sadly mostly only in his native country), but such ambitious undertaking, as presented here, has never been attempted so far. In retrospect, this project proves the true greatness and depth of Komeda´s music, which transpires as being beyond and above any genre classification. The album includes thirteen pieces of music, eight of which are original Komeda´s compositions and the rest are new pieces composed by contemporary composers, who were inspired by him and his music. Bokszczanin carefully assembled a group of instrumentalists, mostly Jazz players, which consists of trumpeter Robert MajewskiFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Pawel GusnarFind albums by this artist and Tomasz SzukalskiFind albums by this artist and flautist Ryszard BorowskiFind albums by this artist. Four of the tracks include vocals, performed by the excellent Grazyna AuguscikFind albums by this artist, who not only sings the song´s lyrics (written by Polish poetess Agnieszka OsieckaFind albums by this artist) but also adds some vocalese a la early Urszula DudziakFind albums by this artist. The album was recorded at the Reformed Evangelical Church in Warsaw, with the majestic sound of the organ serving as the base element of all the music, with the other instruments playing on top of this basic sound layer. The sensitive and intelligent arrangements were written partly by the participating musicians and partly by other contemporary Polish composers / arrangers. Overall this is obviously a work of love, admiration and respect, a tribute in the true meaning of the idiom. For people familiar with Komeda´s music, this is a revelation, for those unfamiliar with it; this is a heavenly gate which marks a great entry point towards it. It is a rare occasion indeed that an album gave me so much pleasure upon first listening and I´m sure to return to it repeatedly in the future. It goes without saying that I recommend this music to anyone with a pair of ears and some gray matter between them. If anything is essential, this is it!

GRAHAM BOND ~ SOLID BOND
COLLECTORS` CHOICE 2000 (Barcode: 617742200027) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1963 - 1966 Released: 2009

If there ever was a quintessential Jazz-Rock album, which practically not only is the first recorded example of the genre, but also defines it unequivocally, this is it! The music herein was initially released as a double LP for the first time in 1970, but it consists of two sessions recorded earlier by the legendary British saxophonist / organist / vocalist Graham BondFind albums by this artist, the earlier one in 1963 and the later in 1966. These two sessions, diametrically different and yet completely unified in spirit, present a miniscule window into the time-space continuum, which enables us to take a peek at the most feverish period in British music, where invention and pioneering breakthrough were happening on a daily basis. The first of these two sessions is not only the first recording of the emerging Jazz-Rock genre but also the recording debut of one of its future heroes, guitarist John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist. The Graham Bond Quartet, captured live in London´s legendary Klooks Kleek club consisted of Bond (on sax), McLaughlin, Jack BruceFind albums by this artist on acoustic bass and Ginger BakerFind albums by this artist on drums. They played a unique brand of modern jazz, which combined the elements of Free Jazz, Swing and Rock (or Rhythm and Blues), basically inventing the Jazz-Rock Fusion on the fly. Although the music is predominantly Jazzy, Baker´s rhythmic approach, Bond´s phrasing and McLaughlin´s scales all included clear Rock innuendos. During the period separating the first session and the second one, Bond formed the Graham Bond OrganizationFind albums by this artist, which recorded a couple of LPs in 1965 ("The Sound Of 65Find albums with this title" and "There`s A Bond Between UsFind albums with this title") and practically fell apart after Bruce and Baker left to form CreamFind albums by this artist. The second recording features another interim quartet with Bond (this time on organ), saxophonist Dick Heckstall-SmithFind albums by this artist, Bruce (who double-gigged between Cream and some Jazz activities) and the young and upcoming drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist. The music recorded during this session is already full-fledged Fusion, with Jazz being tightly incorporated with Blues, Rhythm and Blues and Rock, similar to the patterns perfected during the Organization days. Some of the material appears on the Organization recordings, other was new, but the overall quality is of course everlasting. Shortly after this recording Heckstall-Smith and Hiseman left Bond to join John MayallFind albums by this artist´s BluesbreakersFind albums by this artist and later formed the mighty ColosseumFind albums by this artist. In retrospect this album, although relatively little known by Jazz-Rock enthusiasts, is a holy grail of the genre and an essential piece of any serious music collection. Unavailable for years, the CD recent reissue is a major contribution to preservation of this superb musical achievement. Essential stuff!

BREAKOUT ~ BLUES
MUZA 940 (Barcode: 5907783499401) ~ POLAND ~ Blues-Rock

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2005

3rd album by Polish group BreakoutFind albums by this artist is one of the most influential albums, not only in Poland but in the entire Easter European music scene. Separated from the West by the Iron Curtain, Eastern European musicians and fans alike had little opportunity to hear album released "on the other side" and therefore relied primarily on whatever was available to them. Poland led the way in music in the 1960s and 1970s not only in Jazz, which flourished there, but also in Rock and Blues-Rock, as well as early Progressive Rock. Albums by NiemenFind albums by this artist, Poland´s most influential Rock / Prog / Jazz-Rock Fusion figure and later on also this album, served as the "musical bible" for generations of Eastern European musicians to study, copy and be inspired by. Breakout, led by vocalist / guitarist / composer Tadeusz NalepaFind albums by this artist, included also lead guitarist Dariusz KozakiewiczFind albums by this artist, harmonica player Tadeusz TrzcinskiFind albums by this artist, bassist Jerzy GoleniewskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Józef HajdaszFind albums by this artist. The lyrics were written by Polish poet Bogdan LoeblFind albums by this artist, who was the band´s resident lyricist. This album is a superb example of Blues-Rock, with absolutely stunning guitar work by Kozakiewicz, which resulted in it being referred to as the Polish version of the legendary John MayallFind albums by this artist´s "Bluesbreakers With Eric ClaptonFind albums with this title" album, being surely as influential as that seminal release. In retrospect the album lost absolutely nothing of its power and beauty and hopefully some Rock-Blues enthusiasts around the world will discover it eventually. Absolutely essential!

ARTHUR BROWN ~ THE CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN (DELUXE EDITION)
ESOTERIC 2178 (Barcode: 5013929727823) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1967 - 1968 Released: 2010

Only album by one of Britain´s most eclectic and often misunderstood recording artist, singer Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist and his first outfit appropriately called The Crazy World Of Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist, which to this day remains as one of the greatest early Prog / Psychedelic albums ever recorded. The group was basically a trio and included the brilliant organist Vincent CraneFind albums by this artist and drummer Drachen TheakerFind albums by this artist, Bassist Sean NicholasFind albums by this artist was used during the recording of the album, which also included brilliant orchestral arrangements done by Crane. One of the tracks of the album called "Fire" was released as a single and achieved an unexpected chart success both in UK and USA, bringing Brown and his mates a brief stardom status, but the band fell apart shortly after the album was recorded, sadly never realizing its full potential, which was truly amazing. Dominated by Brown´s frantic, but beautifully dramatic and virtuosic vocal delivery and Crane´s superb organ playing, based on Jazz influenced improvisations, the band sounded unlike no other band at the time. The music, written mostly by Crane with the exception of a couple Rock classics, is absolutely astounding and fits Brown´s lyrics perfectly. Brown´s delivery is theatrical and manic at times, but always sensitive and of outstanding quality. The album is a relic of the era and an absolutely essential listening experience. This deluxe edition adds a plethora of bonus tracks, many previously never released on record. An absolute masterpiece!

DAVE BRUBECK ~ TIME OUT (50TH ANNIVERSARY LEGACY EDITION)
COLUMBIA 39852 (Barcode: 886973985229) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1959 - 1964 Released: 2009

The fact that this album was destined to become probably the most famous Jazz recording, at least for non-Jazz oriented listeners (as well as one of the genre´s all time bestsellers), is one of world´s mysteries. After all, in spite of the seemingly "easy and pleasant sounding" impression this music makes on most listeners, it was in fact quite difficult and devilishly clever music, completely revolutionary and anything but "normal" by any standard. Pianist / composer Dave BrubeckFind albums by this artist and his crew: saxophonist Paul DesmondFind albums by this artist, bassist Eugene WrightFind albums by this artist and drummer Joe MorelloFind albums by this artist turned just about every Jazz rule upside down on this milestone recording, introducing odd / irregular time signatures, which were unthinkable up to that moment, classical chord structures, which previously belonged only in European Classical Music and multi-themed compositions, which were completely foreign to Be Bop clear and straightforward compositions. And yet, in spite all this "strangeness" the album was an instant hit; go figure? On the other hand however, Brubeck was far from being the only revolutionary figure on the American Jazz scene, with dozens of key musicians / composers breaking down barriers of previously impregnable limitations in Jazz, from the pioneers of Free Jazz on one hand to masters of Cool on the other. The greatest test of all, the test of time, applied to this album shows unequivocally that superb music lasts forever. This music is beyond time and any esthetic limitations, it´s forever young and inspiring and perhaps today, more then ever, listening to this timeless classic can save some of us from the havoc of bullshit being offered as music these days. This beautiful edition adds to the original album some live recordings at Newport Jazz Festival, recorded between 1961 and 1964, where this quartet flies through the music gracefully. The remastered sound of the original album and the live recording is spectacular. As if this would not be enough, a DVD is added, which includes a great documentary about making of this album as well as some live footage of the quartet. What can I say? Look up all the synonyms of the word "essential" and apply to this classic, timeless masterpiece!

GARY BURTON ~ LOFTY FAKE ANAGRAM / A GENUINE TONG FUNERAL
BGO 723 (Barcode: 5017261207234) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1967 Released: 2006

Vibraphonist / composer Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist is one of greatest American Jazz musicians, with a long and outstanding career and a massive body of work. He is also one of relatively few American Jazz artists, who can be considered as true originals, embracing the Jazz tradition but at the same time constantly expanding the horizons of the music and exploring the terra incognita of the genre. This album takes us back to the early days of Burton’s musical path, when he was leading probably the most forward-thinking Jazz quartet of the day. Together with guitarist extraordinaire Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist, bassist Steve SwallowFind albums by this artist and drummer Bob MosesFind albums by this artist, the quartet ventured into some of the earliest examples of Jazz-Rock Fusion, years ahead of their contemporaries. The two original LPs, although both recorded in 1967, are quite different from each other. On Lofty Fake AnagramFind albums with this title the quartet explores mostly a series of original tunes by Burton and Swallow, with finesse and elegance, but also with fire and passion. On A Genuine Tong FuneralFind albums with this title Burton combines forces with another great and unorthodox American Jazz representative, pianist / composer Carla BleyFind albums by this artist. The music is her first full-scale Jazz composition for a band, which she calls a “Dark Opera Without Words”. The “without word” part was to bee soon remedied on her next spectacular project, the first true modern Jazz opera Escalator Over The HillFind albums with this title, which included a libretto by Paul HainesFind albums by this artist. For the recording of this music the quartet was expanded to a small orchestra with Carla Bley on piano, Steve LacyFind albums by this artist and the brilliant Argentinean player Gato BarbieriFind albums by this artist on saxophone, Michael MantlerFind albums by this artist (Carla’s close partner) on trumpet, Jimmy KnepperFind albums by this artist on trombone and Howard JohnsonFind albums by this artist on tuba. The music is of course completely unique and unprecedented, with Bley’s masterly usage of orchestration to create moods and sonic vistas, all of it years ahead of its time. Together these two recordings provide a glimpse at the period when American Jazz was still bubbling with creativity and excitement. Brilliant and essential stuff!

JOHN CAMERON ~ OFF CENTRE
VOCALION 8409 (Barcode: 765387840921) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1969 Released: 2005

British composer / arranger / pianist John CameronFind albums by this artist is mostly known to the world for his pioneering work as a composer of film scores and arranger of countless albums, but in the late 1960s he was also an active Jazz player and his quartet played many gigs at the time and also managed to record this album, which remains to this very day as one of my all time favorites. Unfortunately this is almost the solitary session, which allows us to hear John’s exquisite piano work, and therefore it has also an immense historic importance. The quartet also included three absolutely marvelous players: saxophonists and flautist Harold McNairFind albums by this artist (one of the greatest talents of the British Jazz scene who passed away at a tragically young age), extraordinary bassist Danny ThompsonFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony CarrFind albums by this artist, who was a central figure on the British scene for many years. This album is special for many reasons, but I’ll mention just a few: first the absolutely brilliant compositions by John, with ingenious melodic lines and unusual time signatures – so typical of the British Jazz around that period; second the divine playing by Harold, whose flute work was second to none; third the level of musicianship displayed by all the players, which is absolutely stunning. Combined, all these factors contribute to making this album so special. Hearing it on CD for the first time, with the magnificent remastering by Michael DuttonFind albums by this artist, was a great experience and I’m delighted that this gem is available again to be enjoyed by the new generation of music lovers. JOHN CARTER / BOBBY BRADFORD ~ SEEKING
HATOLOGY 620 (Barcode: 752156062028) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1969 Released: 2006

This long overdue reissue of the legendary debut album by the quartet led by saxophonist / clarinetist / flautist / composer John CarterFind albums by this artist and trumpeter Bobby BradfordFind albums by this artist, with Tom WilliamsonFind albums by this artist on bass and Bruz FreemanFind albums by this artist on drums, is a tribute to the great era of American Jazz, when groundbreaking music was being created there on momentous scale. The quartet was operating under the cooperative name New Art Jazz EnsembleFind albums by this artist, typical of the period´s social / philosophical climate of unity and cooperation on one hand and high appreciation of individual expression and genius on the other. The music expands the tradition already established by Free Jazz pioneers like Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist, Eric DolphyFind albums by this artist and John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, but is completely unique and refreshing. Carter´s virtuosity (my favorite being his clarinet playing) and compositional skills place him immediately at the spearhead of the burgeoning musical revolution taking place at the time, a position he would firmly keep up for decades to come. The interplay between Carter and Branford is reminiscent of the superb dialogue between Ornette Coleman and Don CherryFind albums by this artist, but the level of telepathic conversation seems to be even more intimate. The most amazing aspect of the album is its total lack of aggressiveness; the music tickles the intellect constantly rather than banging the listener right on his head in an attempt to create a shock treatment affect, an approach often used by other Free Jazz / avant-garde players. As a result the music is listenable even to a less experienced Jazz enthusiast, who might find most of other Free Jazz experimentation too overwhelming or aesthetically shocking. In retrospect this album is a Jazz masterpiece in every respect and a worthy addition to every serious music collection. Having it available again is a true blessing and a new chance to get acquainted with a true lost treasure.

Led by brilliant trumpeter Bill ChaseFind albums by this artist, who came to fame as the lead trumpet in Woody HermanFind albums by this artist´s HerdFind albums by this artist, known to deliver some of the strongest high notes ever played on this instrument, and who also played with other orchestras led by such famous leaders like Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist and Stan KentonFind albums by this artist. By the late 1960s Bill Chase became somewhat bored by playing Big Band scores and decided to plunge full steam ahead into the invigorating world of Jazz-Rock Fusion. He collected a group of young but highly experienced young players, who shared his vision, creating the nine-piece band Chase. Signed with EpicFind albums on this label, the band recorded 3 brilliant albums, included here, before Bill Chase and three other members of the band tragically perished in a plane crash, putting an end to one of the most promising bands of the time. Chase included a four-trumpet front line, backed by a rocky rhythm section (keyboards, guitar, bass & drums) and a lead singer (Terry RichardsFind albums by this artist, who has a voice quite similar to David Clayton-ThomasFind albums by this artist). This unique lineup brings together the better of the two worlds – Jazz and Rock – creating a superb mixture, which only very few contenders seemed to possess. Most of the material is composed by Bill Chase, with a few classic songs getting a fresh arrangement. All three albums are equally brilliant, with the last one being the most mature and richly orchestrated, with expanded improvised solos and mostly instrumental. Bill Chase delivers several of his high-pitched solos, which leave the listener completely breathless. All in all listening to these albums in a row is an exhilarating experience, hitting right where it counts! This music aged extremely well and today, some 35 years after it was recorded, is still some of the best stuff you can let into your ears – absolutely essential!

CHICAGO ~ AT CARNEGIE HALL (IV)
RHINO 76174 ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

4th album (recorded 1971), and the first live recording. After releasing 3 consecuitive double LPs Chicago astounded the music world with the release of this 4 LPs set - the first ever in Rock. The beautiful packaging and the enclosed goodies (photos & posters) made this one of the most memorable albums in the history of Rock. The music includes selections from the 3 first albums, as well as new tunes performed here for the first time. The recording quality is simply breathtaking, especially in view of the fact that Carnegie Hall was built and designed for acoustic (mostly classical) music. Also the ability of the band to perform live the complex and lengthy compositions is truly amazing. This is undoubtedly one of the most important live albums ever recorded and this expanded reissue, which includes a whole CD worth of bonus material is a treasure not to be missed.

Recorded: 1967 - 2004 Released: 2011

America didn´t really need another Jewish Prophet… Zimmerman created enough mayhem as it was, protesting out loud, corrupting the youth and what have you. Just look what happened: the god-fearing American Folk music went electric and turned into Rock, to be followed by the Summer Of Love and later Woodstock! Sodom and Gomorrah! And on top of all this another Jewish poet / singer / songwriter arrives from the north and adds oil to the fire… The connection between Leonard CohenFind albums by this artist and Bob DylanFind albums by this artist is obvious; they both deal often with the same subject matter and similar modus operandi, cleverly crafting revolutionary ideology and dressing it up with music. In many respects Cohen arrived on the scene just after Dylan peaked, and whereas Dylan never managed to recreate the golden era of his youth, Cohen aged well, continuously producing new albums, which were always up to date, both musically and intellectually. This collected studio recordings are a staggering monument presenting Cohen´s talent. Everybody knows some of his songs, which in time became timeless anthems, but listening to these eleven albums chronologically and in full is a true mind-blowing experience. He is a Prophet, a Sage and a great Artist indeed and what is amazing is the simplicity and honesty of his artistic way, devoid of any trickery (studio or otherwise), with minimal orchestration and shunning unnecessary camouflage, just straight to the point riding on the strength of his expressive vocals and heartfelt melodies. In retrospect Cohen is a symbol of minimalism at its most effective. This box is a capsule of good taste, healthy mind and aesthetic symbolism of a time, none of which are to be found today anywhere. An absolute must and an essential piece of what we (still) call Culture, which is disappearing as these words are being written…

ORNETTE COLEMAN ~ BEAUTY IS A RARE THING: THE COMPLETE ATLANTIC RECORDINGS
RHINO 71410 (Barcode: 081227141028) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1959 - 1961 Released: 1993

This magnificent box set includes some of the most revolutionary music ever recorded on this planet. Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist’s music dropped on the jazz scene with the force of an atom bomb by the end of the 1950s. Although other great jazz pioneers, especially John ColtraneFind albums by this artist and Miles DavisFind albums by this artist, were already slowly approaching the free / avant-garde jazz idiom, Coleman’s bold and fearless attack on the conventional jazz form was completely radical and innovative, splitting the jazz community immediately into the pro and contra camps, with discussions as heated as they can get. Coleman was ridiculed and called bad names by critics and listeners alike, who failed to comprehend his prophetic statement, and it took many years before this music was widely accepted into the jazz canon and treated with the proper esteem. Recorded between May 1959 and March 1961 (less than 2 years!) this music includes all 9 Coleman’s albums released on Atlantic (The Shape Of Jazz To ComeFind albums with this title, Change Of The CenturyFind albums with this title, This Is Our MusicFind albums with this title, Free JazzFind albums with this title, Ornette!Find albums with this title, Ornette On TenorFind albums with this title, The Art Of The ImprovisersFind albums with this title, TwinsFind albums with this title and To Whom Who Keeps A RecordFind albums with this title), as well as previously unreleased material and selections from Gunther SchullerFind albums by this artist’s Jazz AbstractionsFind albums with this title featuring Coleman. As usual in such box sets, the music is presented in chronological recording order. As to the musicians, most of the music was recorded in quartet setting, with Coleman and trumpeter Don CherryFind albums by this artist as the permanent core of the group and various bass / drums rhythm sections, which included Charlie HadenFind albums by this artist, Scott LaFaroFind albums by this artist and Jimmy GarrisonFind albums by this artist on bass and Billy HigginsFind albums by this artist and Ed BlackwellFind albums by this artist on drums. The legendary “Free Jazz” session features a double quartet and includes Eric DolphyFind albums by this artist on bass clarinet and Freddie HubbardFind albums by this artist on trumpet. There is hardly any need to go into the description of the music itself - whole books have been written on the subject and the music is indescribable anyway. What is important however, is the fact that any respectable jazz collection could never be considered comprehensive if it didn’t include this music. Absolutely essential!

JOHN COLTRANE ~ THE CLASSIC QUARTET: COMPLETE IMPULSE! STUDIO RECORDINGS
IMPULSE! 280 (Barcode: 011105028028) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1961 - 1965 Released: 1998

If there was ever a box set that includes the most quintessential music recorded in the 20th century, this is it! If we lived in an ideal world, this icon would be present in every household on earth, replacing the many religious / political / pseudo-cultural and empty icons so many people worship blindly. Sadly we don’t live in such a world and the only solace is that Coltrane’s music touched millions of people around the globe and shaped the way of thinking and inspired the way of playing of countless musicians over time. Not enough, but still quite an achievement, for which one should be grateful to the technology of sound recording. Let me say this again (as repetition is this case is hardly redundant): If I were to head the SETI project, I’d have this music beamed out to deep space indefinitely, hoping that if we ever get to the Encounter of the Third Kind, the sentient beings out there might have a better opinion of our species than the average Homo Sapiens might project. Back on earth; this lavish set includes all the music the legendary Coltrane Quartet (with McCoy Tyner – piano, Jimmy Garrison – bass and Elvin Jones – drums) recorded for Impulse! between December of 1961 and September of 1965. It includes the complete 8 studio albums the Quartet recorded (“Coltrane”, “Ballads”, “Crescent”, “A Love Supreme”, “Plays”, “Transition”, “Sun Ship”, “First Meditations”) and the studio tracks of 4 other albums, which also included live tracks (“Impressions”, “Live At Birdland”, “Kulu Se Mama”, “Infinity”). In addition various previously unreleased tracks and tracks released on compilation albums are included. All the tracks are presented in strict chronological order (by date of recording), which enhances the value of the set immensely, as the listener is able to follow the rapid transition process Coltrane’s music was taking during this period. It is almost impossible to believe that it is the same Quartet that recorded the first tracks in the set and the last ones. The visionary drive that pushed Coltrane to the limits (and beyond) of human ability to express emotions and intellect in the form of musical creation is plainly evident here. Coltrane’s impulse (how appropriate) to expand the borders of known musical vocabulary seems to completely engulf the other members of the Quartet, as these tracks are as much Coltrane’s as the Quartet’s. The telepathic interplay between the musicians and the process of constant challenging each other is an essential ingredient of this music, which takes it to a higher plane. The bonus tracks shed light on the entire process of development and clear many unanswered (up to the time this was released) riddles and gaps in the continuity of the process. Obviously the material released during Coltrane’s life was only partial and suffered from corporate decisions as to what and how was released. This set puts the record straight (no chaser). To summarize; this is one of the best introspective releases ever done (of the best music ever recorded). The set is lavishly packaged in a sturdy metal case and includes a 100-page book with exquisite photos and intelligent liner notes. Add to this over 8 hours of heavenly music and you get the Mother of all box sets and a collectors’ item that is virtually priceless. Still thinking about this?

JOHN COLTRANE ~ THE COMPLETE 1961 VILLAGE VANGUARD RECORDINGS
IMPULSE! 232 (Barcode: 011105023221) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1961 Released: 1997

When this music was recorded in November of 1961 I was only 10 years old and yet it changed my life forever. Living in (Socialist) Poland, my access to contemporary (at the time) jazz originating in the US was pretty limited and the only beacon of light was the daily Willis ConoverFind albums by this artist’s radio jazz program on Voice Of America, beamed from across the Iron Curtain. Millions of Eastern European listeners would risk freedom (listening to VOA was a criminal act then) to gain freedom, myself included. These broadcasts changed the life of countless people and particularly in Poland would eventually be a dominant factor in the process of forming a burgeoning and extremely fruitful local jazz scene. Many hours of my early childhood were spent with myself standing on a conductor’s podium (e sledge), in front of an imaginary orchestra playing inside the enormous radio (a pre WW II antique). Since classical music was less censored and sponsored by the Establishment, it was there for us to enjoy most of it of very high quality. I remember listening for hours at end to the annual Chopin competition, which was Poland’s most prestigious music event, getting to know his music inside out before I even knew anything about him. My Mother encouraged my “conducting” aspirations warmly, supplementing them with occasional background information. But the discovery of jazz and its strange convoluting patterns and unfamiliar rhythms was a revelation. I just couldn’t get enough of it and every new artist or piece of music was an instant bliss. By the time I was about to hear John ColtraneFind albums by this artist for the first time I was already familiar with the music of Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist, Count BasieFind albums by this artist, Charlie ParkerFind albums by this artist and Dizzie GillespieFind albums by this artist (thanks to Mr. Conover). Conover, in contrast to many of his peers (who were stuck in be-bop or some earlier jazz sub-genre for the rest of their lives), was remarkably open-minded and understood the genius of Coltrane and his visionary contribution to the development of the Jazz Art form. He therefore featured every new Coltrane album as soon as it was released. So here I was, 10 years old, some time in early 1962, listening to the Village Vanguard sessions – an experience equivalent to a 10,000 Volts electricity shock. My life would definitely be never the same again. I hope these personal reminiscences don’t put you off too much, but I just couldn’t resist the temptation. Taking the time-travel express to now here are my comments about this music from a “45 years later” point of view. In 1961 Coltrane left AtlanticFind albums on this label (his second label, PrestigeFind albums on this label being the first) and signed a contract with Impulse!Find albums on this label, the new and ambitious jazz label run by producer Bob ThieleFind albums by this artist, where he would stay for the rest of his life. Coltrane was already following a path (mostly subconsciously) which would lead him to the edge of the known jazz explorations and beyond. His monumental Atlantic albums like Giant Steps and My Favorite Things were just a glimpse of things to come. Coltrane felt that Thiele would allow him to speed up the process of reaching the quest of musical enlightenment by allowing him total artistic freedom and supporting him all the way and he was of course right. The extensive volume of music recorded for Impulse! in the span of almost 7 years right up to his death would become the most important musical legacy of the 20th Century, so innovative and groundbreaking that it is still a mystery to many contemporary listeners and musicologists today. Coltrane’s first recording for Impulse! (in the spring of 1961) would be the Africa / Brass sessions, an ambitious project involving a large ensemble of the most gifted players on the scene (Freddie HubbardFind albums by this artist, Booker LittleFind albums by this artist, Eric DolphyFind albums by this artist and many others) – see The Complete Africa / Brass SessionsFind albums with this title album, another essential Coltrane release. These sessions introduce several new elements in Coltrane’s music, like Far-Eastern motifs, African rhythms and other ethnic influences. In November of 1961 Thiele decided to record Coltrane live, using the 4 nights booking at the NY club The Village Vanguard (where many jazz albums were recorded live) for this purpose. The booking was for a John Coltrane Quintet and it was only natural that the Quintet would include Eric Dolphy, whom Coltrane knew, respected and played with earlier. The legendary Quartet (with McCoy TynerFind albums by this artist, Jimmy GarrisonFind albums by this artist and Elvin JonesFind albums by this artist) was not entirely crystallized at the time, so Coltrane and Thiele decided to expand the line-up (on some takes) to include an oud player (Ahmed Abdul-MalikFind albums by this artist) and alternative bassist (Reggie WorkmanFind albums by this artist) and drummer (Roy HaynesFind albums by this artist). Since this music was recorded for a future release Thiele (as any produce would do) recorded several takes of each tune, some with an alternating line-up. This 4CDs box set includes all the music that was recorded during these four days (mind you not all the music that was played, as some of it was not recorded hence the “complete” being not entirely true) in the exact order it was recorded. This music was to be released later on two albums (Live At The Village Vanguard and The Other Village Vanguard Tapes) as well as parts of other albums (Impressions) and collections. Collected here together for the first time, this is a monumental piece of jazz history and an unforgettable musical experience. Coltrane’s circular breathing technique and his “wall of sound” approach are clearly evident here for the first time in their full glory. The comparison of the different versions of the same tunes are both fundamental and clairvoyant examples of the “one time experience” that every jazz performance essentially is. The power, the vision, the super-human strength of will of the Master and Prophet (please excuse the almost religious references) that Coltrane was, are here for us, his disciples, to discover, study, revere and bequest to future generations. This box set is something one has in one’s record collection for life. It is not only timeless, but also constantly evolving in parallel to one’s private (musical) evolution. Listening to it time after time (especially after a long period of abstention) will be revealing and constantly surprising. It is a superb example of great Art, which keeps alive for eternity, adopting itself to the changing cultural surroundings, and therefore being truly eternal. I can’t imagine anybody, who calls himself a music lover, not owning this music, as naive as this might sound, since I believe there is something in it for everybody. Beyond essential!

JOHN COLTRANE ~ THE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION: THE COMPLETE ATLANTIC RECORDINGS
RHINO 71984 (Barcode: 081227198428) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1959 - 1961 Released: 1995

This magnificent Box Set compiles everything John ColtraneFind albums by this artist recorded for AtlanticFind albums on this label – his second long-term recording stint with a label following his PrestigeFind albums on this label period and preceding his final years on Impulse!Find albums on this label. The first 6 CDs include all the 10 Coltrane’s LPs released on Atlantic (Giant StepsFind albums with this title, Coltrane JazzFind albums with this title, My Favorite ThingsFind albums with this title, Bags & TraneFind albums with this title, Olé ColtraneFind albums with this title, Coltrane Plays The BluesFind albums with this title, Coltrane’s SoundFind albums with this title, The Avant-GardeFind albums with this title, The Coltrane LegacyFind albums with this title, Alternate TakesFind albums with this title), but the material is organized in chronological order (by session). The 7th CD adds over an hour of never before released material. All this music was recorded over a period of just over two years (January 1959 – May 1961), but it includes some of the most pivotal Jazz recordings ever. The Atlantic period is a superb document of transition for the Jazz Giant. Stylistically it presents the steady move from Be Bop and Hard Bop to Free. Instrumentally it shows the shift from tenor saxophone to soprano saxophone. It also reveals the process of crystallization of Coltrane’s great classic quartet (see The Classic Quartet: Complete Impulse! Studio RecordingsFind albums with this title), whereas by October of 1960 three quarters of the quartet (with McCoy TynerFind albums by this artist on piano and Elvin JonesFind albums by this artist on drums) were already in place and only the bassist Jimmy GarrisonFind albums by this artist was to join soon after. Two of the sessions present here are collaborations with other co-credited Jazz Giants: “Bags & Trane” with the great vibraphonist Milt JacksonFind albums by this artist and “The Avant-Garde” with legendary trumpeter Don CherryFind albums by this artist. The music is of course divine – absolutely nothing I can say about it would ever come close to the experience of actually listening to it. This music influenced every Jazz musician and Jazz lover on earth and left a mark on contemporary music, which has no equals to this day. It also shows Coltrane as a great composer for the first time, with some of his greatest melodies like “Giant Steps” and “Naima”. His interpretation of “My Favorite Things” is of course probably the most commonly known Jazz anthem ever. This sublime music is an integral part of Art’s cannon and an everlasting evidence of human (or perhaps super-human) genius. Absolutely essential!

COMUS ~ SONG TO COMUS - THE COMPLETE COLLECTION
CASTLE 1121 (Barcode: 5050749411211) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1970 - 1974 Released: 2005

This extraordinary album is one of the most anticipated reissues in the history of Prog. It includes all the material recorded by ComusFind albums by this artist, which includes their two albums: First UtteranceFind albums with this title (recorded 1970) and To Keep From CryingFind albums with this title (recorded 1974), two singles by the group and another single by Roger WoottonFind albums by this artist – the band’s main writer and singer. There is also one previously unreleased song recorded for the debut album. It is the debut album, which brought the band the cult status as one of the strangest and most interesting bands in the Prog history. It remains to this day a timeless masterpiece and deserves a place in the pantheon of Prog. The material, the weird vocals and superb playing is years ahead of anything that was recorded at that time. A mixture of horror, folk, avant-garde, theatrics and pure genus, definitely a unique musical creation, which is now available again after 35 years of dormancy. The second album is of course not nearly as good as the debut, recorded under pressures from the record label to produce “commercial” material. Nevertheless having the entire output by Comus in one beautiful release is bliss incarnate. An absolute must!

CHICK COREA ~ COREA.CONCERTO
SONY 61799 (Barcode: 5099706179924) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 1999 Released: 1999

What a fantastic and sadly overlooked album! Recorded in 1999 with his group OriginFind albums by this artist and the London Philharmonic OrchestraFind albums by this artist, this is Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist’s first “serious” flirt with classical music. Combining jazz and classical music is not new per se, but the results over the years varied between banal and brilliant. Fortunately this one belongs to the latter category. Corea proved over the years his amazing versatility in the jazz genre, composing and performing in every sub-genre between free jazz and fusion. This time he steps beyond the strict jazz field and shows that he can do it splendidly. The album includes two major works (each in three parts): his already “classic” composition Spain arranged for sextet and orchestra and the Concerto No. 1 for piano and Orchestra. The music is of course typical Corea, but the orchestral parts bring reminiscences of Gershwin’s classical works and works of the French Modernists. Of course the entire work is original and intricate enough to provide the listener with immense pleasures. The recording quality is superb, with each instrument heard distinctly and in full range. Special merit goes to Avishai CohenFind albums by this artist’s bass contributions. Most warmly recommended and essential for Corea’s fans!

CHICK COREA / HERBIE HANCOCK ~ AN EVENING WITH CHICK COREA & HERBIE HANCOCK
POLYDOR 835680 (Barcode: 042283568020) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1978 Released: 1988

The 1978 acoustic piano duet tour of Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist is documented on two albums – this one and the ColumbiaFind albums on this label companion album (also called An Evening WithFind albums with this title). Fortunately Chick & Herbie played so much music during their concerts that the two (both double vinyl albums originally) have no parallel tunes on them, except for the signature tunes: “Maiden Voyage” and “La Fiesta”, which get a completely different treatment on each release. This means that, as the music on both albums is absolutely divine (see my comments on the other album), they are both absolutely essential and constitute in fact a non-separable document. There is a slight difference in the choice of material on both releases, with this album including more complex and “freer” pieces with plenty of opportunities for both players to demonstrate their complete command of the instrument and more “unusual” playing techniques. On a side note: the tour was arranged not only to enable the two incredible musicians to enjoy each other’s company and inspiration, but also to “give the finger” to the horde of critics, which brutally dismissed Chick’s & Herbie’s 1970’s electric / fusion work, accusing them of betrayal towards the jazz Art Form and doubting their artistic integrity (which of course was a heap of nonsense). The performances included on these two albums prove how totally wrong they all were. Unfortunately two tracks on this album were edited (shortened) to enable the release of this material on a single CD (an artistic crime, that should be punishable by beheading the corporate decision-makers). Therefore a proper reissue of this album is still due – hats off to Columbia for not making the same stupid mistake.

CHICK COREA / JOHN MCLAUGHLIN ~ FIVE PEACE BAND LIVE
CONCORD 231397 (Barcode: 888072313972) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2008 Released: 2009

Pianist Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and guitarist John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist are both icons of contemporary music. Their activities in the last 40 years span such a vast spectrum of music that only a very few other musicians on this planet can be counted their equals. Corea and McLaughlin both played a crucial role in the revolutionary Miles DavisFind albums by this artist ensemble that gave us "In A Silent WayFind albums with this title" and "Bitches BrewFind albums with this title", and then continued to explore and revolutionize Jazz and Fusion, each with his own numerous ensembles. Although they have performed over the years occasionally as a duo, no formal recordings were issued of these meetings (some of their playing can be heard on the momentous McLaughlin Montreux box set). Therefore the forming of the Five Peace BandFind albums by this artist, initiated by Corea after his last Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist reunion tour, is a first time the two Masters play together in a regular band. Of course one immediately assumes that the band should sound as a combination of Return To Forever and Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist, but since the early days of Fusion are long gone, Five Peace Band´s concept is completely up to date and modern. With saxophonist Kenny GarrettFind albums by this artist, bassist Christian McBrideFind albums by this artist and drummer Vinnie ColaiutaFind albums by this artist the band is an incredible music making machine, offering the listener an orgy of sound, beautiful expanded improvisations and sophisticated compositions. Most of the material was written by Corea and McLaughlin, but they also pay tribute to their former boss Miles Davis by including some of his music, with another ex-Davis band member Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist present as a guest. There is little need to recommend this album flamboyantly, as any serious music lover surely understands the magnitude of this recording. This is a dream come true and an absolutely essential piece of music!

The result is a beautiful conversation of two Masters, both technically and aesthetically awe inspiring. The music on this album was written by Coryell and Catherine, but they also play one Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist composition (on this track the German piano giant Joachim KühnFind albums by this artist appears as a guest) and a striking version of a Django ReinhardtFind albums by this artist tune. Eric ClaptonFind albums by this artist, Jack BruceFind albums by this artist and Ginger BakerFind albums by this artist created a complete new level of Rock expression, building upon the Blues tradition, turning the volume knob to the max and most importantly adding the element of improvisation, enabling them to extend the 3 minutes song format into half an hour epics. MILES DAVIS ~ AT CARNEGIE HALL: THE COMPLETE CONCERT
COLUMBIA 65027 (Barcode: 5099706502722) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1961 Released: 1998

It’s good to see that record companies sometimes are able to get a grip and correct the mistakes of the past. ColumbiaFind albums on this label has certainly tried its best to do justice to the magnificent recorded legacy of Miles DavisFind albums by this artist and this album is a part of that effort. This album assembles the complete Miles Davis Quintet / Gil EvansFind albums by this artist Orchestra concert recorded on May 19, 1961 at the Carnegie Hall, putting everything at the original recording order without editing or dubbed applause (the music included here was previously available on two separate albums: Miles Davis At Carnegie HallFind albums with this title and More Music From The Legendary Carnegie Hall ConcertFind albums with this title). This album is of course a perfect companion to the sublime Columbia 6 CDs box set The Complete Columbia Studio RecordingsFind albums with this title, especially as the concert was the first time Miles performed with the Gil Evans Orchestra live. 1961 marked an extremely busy and productive year for Miles. Following the departure of John ColtraneFind albums by this artist and Bill EvansFind albums by this artist, the “first” legendary Miles Davis Quintet was history and Miles quickly organized a new Quintet, which was to be his vehicle for an interim period of about two years, until the “second” legendary Quintet was to rise like a phoenix and take Jazz places never dreamt about. The “interim” Quintet included excellent and experienced players: Hank MobleyFind albums by this artist – saxophone, Wynton KellyFind albums by this artist – piano, Paul ChambersFind albums by this artist – bass and Jimmy CobbFind albums by this artist – drums (the last two were remaining members from the “first” Quintet). These players followed their leader with skill and devotion, creating some of the best modern jazz on record. Just one month before this concert the Quintet recorded a magnificent live album In PersonFind albums with this title (which is now available as a 4 CDs box set In Person Friday And Saturday Nights At The Blackhawk, CompleteFind albums with this title). The studio album Someday My Prince Will ComeFind albums with this title was recorded just a couple of months before the Carnegie concert recording. The next (and last) studio recording with Gil Evans (Quiet NightsFind albums with this title) was just months ahead. Looking back at this period it becomes plainly evident that Miles was already “miles ahead” in his mind, looking for a new vehicle and a new direction, which would commence shortly with the formation of the new Quintet and the groundbreaking new album ahead (Seven Steps To HeavenFind albums with this title). That of course makes this music no less magnificent, as Miles was destined to be “in transition” for the duration of his entire career. It remains here, recorded for posterity, for us mortals to enjoy (almost 46 years later), loosing absolutely nothing of its relevance and eternal beauty. Miles of course was one of the very few artists, who made a statement with every note they played. As such, these notes are a source of inspiration and joy for those who love this music. Essential!

COLUMBIA 775150 (Barcode: 886977515026) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1969 Released: 2010

Almost every music lover on this planet is aware of the fact that this is a monumental piece of music, one of the pillars of modern Jazz Art Form and way beyond. I have lived with this music for 40 years now, since the day it was first released and I opened the gatefold double LP to place the vinyl on my record player, starting a musical journey that would last a lifetime. Now, while playing this new edition of the album, I feel the same kind of excitement and elation that always accompanies me when this music is playing. In the years that passed I´ve written extensively about Miles DavisFind albums by this artist and the "Bitches BrewFind albums with this title" album, so I won´t repeat myself. Suffice to say, that for me this is a masterpiece of extraordinary proportions, which gets better with time. I´d like however, to expand on the subject of how this edition compliments "The Complete Bitches Brew SessionsFind albums with this title" box set, making it clear that having just one of these two editions is simply not enough. First and foremost, this edition includes the version of the album as originally released on the double LP set 40 years ago. This particular version was elaborately edited, spliced, mixed and cooked by producer Teo MaceroFind albums by this artist, which was often dramatically different from the music actually recorded in the studio by the musicians. Regardless of the fact if one likes or agrees to what Macero did with the music, this is what the world knew as "Bitches Brew" until the appearance of the box set. The box set does not include any of these particular collages and therefore they are parallel, but far from identical. In addition, this edition includes six previously unreleased pieces of music; the first two being alternate takes from the actual sessions not included in the box set (which makes the "complete" part of the box set´s title redundant) and the other four being single edits from the album (previously unreleased on CD) – yes ColumbiaFind albums on this label did make singles for the radio from this album – imagine that! If all that is not enough, this set also includes a DVD with the Miles Davis quintet (Miles, Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist, Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, Dave HollandFind albums by this artist and Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist) filmed in Copenhagen in November 1969 shortly after this prophetic music was recorded, which alone is worth the price of the entire set. So here we have it – another essential piece of recorded history that everybody simply has to have.

MILES DAVIS ~ IN PERSON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHTS AT THE BLACKHAWK, COMPLETE
COLUMBIA 87106 ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded live on April 21-22, 1961, this superb Box Set presents the Miles Davis Quintet performing at the San Francisco’s Blackhawk club. Miles has just lost John Coltrane as a member of his (so-called) first great Quintet, which lasted for almost five years. Coltrane’s replacement, saxophonist Hank Mobley, faced an almost impossible task of filling the shoes of the departed Giant, but as these recording prove beyond any doubt, he was up to the challenge and ready and with the brilliant rhythm section consisting of Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums this particular Quintet turned out to be one of the most intense, hard-swinging and brilliant ensembles ever led by Miles. Although short-lived, it is documented on this momentous recording for posterity. When presented with great music the best thing a producer can do is to start the tape rolling and keep it rolling. This is exactly what this recording is all about – a complete record of the music as it happened during those two nights, no fiddling around, no editing, no splicing – 100 % proof great Jazz. The entire ensemble delivers an unbelievable explosion of attack and bravado, Miles plays some of his best solos ever, Mobley counter-attacks with ferocious, yet highly melodic improvisations of his own and the ever-so-elegant Kelly mixes his romantic harmonies and intense vamping behind the horns. Chambers and Cobb provide the rock solid, yet highly imaginative pulsation driving the entire ensemble like a chronometer and managing the intricate rhythm changes with precision and elegance. This is Jazz at its best – ass kicking and inspired. Thank God for the invention of the tape recorder – as I was 10 years old when this magnificent music was recorded, I would have solemnly missed this music if it was lost forever – now I can enjoy it as if it’s happening right now. In the 45 years since this music was recorded, it lost absolutely nothing of its aesthetic and intellectual value; en contraire it sounds so much better when compared to the endless oceans of musical boredom surrounding us in the form of (most) contemporary musical feeble-mindedness. Absolutely essential food for the mind and soul.

MILES DAVIS ~ LIVE IN EUROPE 1967 – THE BOOTLEG SERIES VOL. 1
COLUMBIA 94053 (Barcode: 886979405325) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1967 Released: 2011

The Miles DavisFind albums by this artist second quintet is often considered the ultimate Jazz ensemble of all times. With saxophonist Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist, pianist Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist, bassist Ron CarterFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony WilliamsFind albums by this artist as his partners, trumpeter / composer Davis was pushing music light-years ahead during the three and a half years this quintet existed (1965-1968). The studio albums recorded by the quintet (see "The Complete Columbia Studio Recordings Of The Miles Davis Quintet 1965-68Find albums with this title") are absolute masterpieces, which are totally timeless and unparalleled in their depth and perfection. However, it was on stage that this ensemble really created its best work. Sadly, the recorded legacy of live performances by this quintet is not very extensive and therefore this release, which brings us 3 CDs and a DVD of previously unreleased live material by this quintet, is worth its weight in gold to every Davis connoisseur. Recorded (and filmed) during the quintet´s European tour in October / November 1967, this music and the film were all captured within a period of eleven days, which means that we get a clearly focused picture of what they were doing at the time. After playing together for almost three years, the quintet was at the absolute peek of their creative powers, completely focused and intimately linked together by telepathic musical understanding. Listening to these live performance confirms all this, but also much more. It ultimately shows how creative these players were, even when performing a fixed set of compositions evening after evening. Davis, firmly in the lead, gives the cues to move from one composition to another or a change of tempo, but allows the individual musicians complete freedom. It is this freedom, which is the most striking and significant element omnipresent here, almost shocking in its power. Large portions of this music could be easily taken from a Free Jazz concert, even though the basic concept is still anchored in mainstream. Collective improvisations often have all five members of the quintet playing at different tempi, scales and themes at the same time, somehow miraculously making a perfect sense. Personally I´ve always found the young Tony Williams to be the most striking personality in this ensemble, with his perception of rhythm more radically different and innovative than the other quintet members. A careful listener will be able to hear Williams play four different rhythms simultaneously, each played by one of his limbs. This barrage of sound is the most striking drumming imaginable, and an almost mystical experience. It would be ridiculous to recommend this release, at it goes without saying that all modern Jazz listeners should find it absolutely essential and an obligatory part of their collections. Since the subtitle suggests that this is just the first in a series of previously unreleased Miles Davis recordings, all I can say is Halleluiah!

MILES DAVIS ~ SEVEN STEPS: THE COMPLETE COLUMBIA RECORDINGS OF MILES DAVIS 1963-1964
COLUMBIA 90840 ~ USA ~ Jazz

This is the 3rd chapter in the Columbia’s epic series of Miles Davis Box Sets, which is a monumental reissue project of recordings by the most important Jazz musician of the 20th century. Recorded mostly live during 1963 & 1964, the music documents the so-called in transition period of Miles between his two legendary Quintets. Miles was, as always. In search of the next step he wanted to take musically and was searching for the right musicians who could accompany him in his journey. Therefore, although this set includes music performed by a constantly changing line-up, the crystallization of the second great Quintet is well documented here, with Ron Carter (bass), Tony Williams (drums), Herbie Hancock (piano) and finally Wayne Shorter (sax) gradually joined his group. All the other musicians playing with Miles here (George Coleman and Sam Rivers on sax, Victor Feldman on piano and Frank Butler on drums) were admirable of course, but somehow lacked the special chemistry Miles required from his players. The music contained here was originally released on the following albums: “Seven Steps To Heaven”, “In Europe”, “My Funny Valentine”, “Four & More”, “In Tokyo” and “In Berlin”. As usual, a plethora of previously unreleased tracks and tracks released on other albums and various compilations is also included, all present in full chronological order. All of the material is painstakingly remastered and sounds superbly. Of course all this stuff is heavenly and although the musical progress here is slow, every note played by Miles is absolutely right on. There is a lot of tension in the air as Miles tests the ground for the next leap, pushing his musicians to the limit. The youngster Williams re-defines the meaning of Jazz drumming here, with more freedom and space than ever heard before, even with the parallel Free Jazz drummers. Hancock’s highly evolved musicality and deep sense of melody is already quite evident and Carter’s powerful and precise bass cements the entire concept together. This stuff is as essential to any Jazz lover as air and water are to his physical existence. The box packaging is as lavish and extravagantly beautiful, as all the other items in this series, with extensive liner notes, detailed discography and many superb photographs.
A special note to collectors:
The initial release of all the Miles Davis Box Sets in this reissue series is packaged in an exquisite metal-bound (except chapter 5 which is cardboard-bound) frame housed in a hard cardboard CD-sized slipcase (except for chapters 1 & 8 which have a metal slipcase). Once the initial release is sold out, the CDs are repackaged in a tall-box digipack book format. Naturally the tall-box issues have a much lower retail price tag. All the initial release CD-sized issues become priceless collectors’ items in time.

MILES DAVIS ~ SKETCHES OF SPAIN (50TH ANNIVERSARY LEGACY EDITION)
COLUMBIA 43949 (Barcode: 886974394921) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1959 Released: 2009

It is extremely hard to believe that this masterpiece is half a century old! Hearing it today reveals therefore that trumpeter Miles DavisFind albums by this artist and arranger / conductor Gil EvansFind albums by this artist were both visionaries, in addition to their supreme musical sensitivity and revolutionary approach to music expansion. Combing Jazz with non-Western Classical music, in this case the magnificent "Concierto de Aranjuez" by Joaquin RodrigoFind albums by this artist (originally a concerto for guitar and orchestra, arranged for trumpet by Evans), was a bold step and one of the first examples of Jazz-World Fusion. Sure enough some American critics and fans hated it from day one, using the "usual" intelligent argument: "This is not Jazz". But Jazz it was, a magnificent new form of Jazz, where the lyrical composition and brilliant (and not less lyrical) interpretation by Miles just fit together like a dream. The muted trumpet played by Miles turns into a magical / mystical mythological flute, luring the listener into the music, completely intoxicated by the sound. I could go on and on about the music, but what´s the point, just grab it and listen. The original LP was extended for this special addition with a whole second CD of bonus material, including studio outtakes and the only live performance of this music with Davis and Evans. Totally essential!

MILES DAVIS ~ THE CELLAR DOOR SESSIONS 1970
COLUMBIA 93614 (Barcode: 827969361429) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2005

It would be incredibly presumptuous to write any kind of serious musical review of this music in a limited format, so I’ll only stick to the very basics here. The music contained in this set was recorded live on December 16-19, 1970 in a dinky little Washington, DC club called “Cellar Door”. Why would Miles play in such a venue at all remained a mystery (one of many around Miles’ life and work), as he could easily sell out any concert hall in the US. In retrospect it now becomes obvious that Miles simply wanted a sort of limited exposure live recording opportunity to record his new band, which was yet another change of direction in his career. Following the groundbreaking Bitches BrewFind albums with this title and Jack JohnsonFind albums with this title sessions, Miles decided to strip down his ensemble to the bare minimum and concentrate on a more rock / funk oriented sound. Miles was always intensely attentive to everything that was happening around him musically and his frequent performances at the Fillmore venues exposed him to scores of rock bands, which enjoyed immense popularity with the crowds. Miles concluded that he could easily play music, which would be as acceptable to the rock crowds as the rock music they were accustomed to, hell he could do it better! This sessions prove that he was absolutely right. For the new group Miles kept Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist on electric piano, since Keith was already at ease with rock oriented material he played in his earlier stints. He also kept Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist on drums, as John could rock better that any of the rock drummers around, considering his immense talent and technique. The saxophone spot was taken by Gary BartzFind albums by this artist (Steve GrossmanFind albums by this artist was having serious drug-related problems), a young and extremely capable player who sounded remarkably similar to John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, but felt comfortable with the funky rhythms. The biggest change (and surprise) was the bass spot, which Miles assigned to the tender MotownFind albums on this label (yes – the Jackson 5Find albums by this artist!) electric bassist Michael HendersonFind albums by this artist. Henderson’s pulsating funky rhythms set the essence for these sessions, not only serving as a rock solid foundation upon which the musicians are free to develop their improvisations, but also being the glue that keeps the music together. The quintet of Davis, Bartz, Jarrett, Henderson and DeJohnette play on all the 6 CDs in this set. The Brazilian percussionist Airto MoreiraFind albums by this artist joins the quintet on the 3rd day (expanding it to a sextet) and is heard on 4 CDs. Moreira’s contribution to Miles’ music deserve a chapter in itself - in these sessions he skillfully adds color and polyrhythmic accents, always with taste and precision. On the last day the group is extended to a septet with John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist joining in on his fire blazing electric guitar, like there is no tomorrow. This truly turns the whole ensemble into the “greatest fucking rock band you ever heard”, to quote Miles. McLaughlin is in his usual great form, which means he is just way ahead of anything else done at that time on guitar. What about Miles himself? Let me just say that he plays some of his best notes ever on these sessions, full of vigor, passion and inspiration. What else can I say here? This music is beyond comparison, beyond criticism, beyond all the bullshit people say about music… If you didn’t hear it you simply don’t exist - musically that is ;).

The sessions took place between August 1969 and February 1970 and the term "revolutionary" does not even begin to describe the music. MILES DAVIS ~ THE COMPLETE COLUMBIA STUDIO RECORDINGS OF THE MILES DAVIS QUINTET 1965-68
COLUMBIA 90925 (Barcode: 827969092521) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1965 - 1968 Released: 2004

This is the 4th chapter in the ColumbiaFind albums on this label’s epic series of Miles DavisFind albums by this artist Box Sets, which is a monumental reissue project of recordings by the most important Jazz musician of the 20th century. This set presents the complete studio output recorded by the legendary quintet between January 1965 and June 1968, which included Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist (tenor saxophone), Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist (piano), Ron CarterFind albums by this artist (bass) and Tony WilliamsFind albums by this artist (drums). During this three and a half years period this quintet was the most important jazz ensemble in the world and also the most stable musical environment Miles ever enjoyed, which enabled him to push the boundaries of music ever further, slowly changing the face of jazz from the bee bop and hard bop traditions into the free style Fusion, which was to emerge as the next step of his visionary path. The sessions included here were released on the following albums and compilations: E.S.P.Find albums with this title, Miles SmilesFind albums with this title, SorcererFind albums with this title, NefertitiFind albums with this title, Miles In The SkyFind albums with this title, Filles De KilimanjaroFind albums with this title, Water BabiesFind albums with this title, Circle In The RoundFind albums with this title and DirectionsFind albums with this title. As to the music – anything I can say here will be completely banal in view of the sheer genus of this masterpiece. MILES DAVIS ~ THE COMPLETE IN A SILENT WAY SESSIONS
COLUMBIA 90921 ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1968 - 1969

This is the 5th chapter in the ColumbiaFind albums on this label’s epic series of Miles DavisFind albums by this artist Box Sets, which is a monumental reissue project of recordings by the most important Jazz musician of the 20th century. This set presents the complete sessions which originally resulted in the In A Silent WayFind albums with this title album. The material was recorded over a 6 months period (September 1968 through February 1969) and clearly shows the new direction Miles was shifting into, after his legendary second Quintet was expanded and a new circle of musicians was selected by the Master to take with him the journey into the (then) unknown territory (Joe ZawinulFind albums by this artist on keyboards, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist on guitar, Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist on electric piano and Dave HollandFind albums by this artist on bass). Tony WilliamsFind albums by this artist on drums, Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist on sax and Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist on electric piano stayed from the second Quintet and also play on these sessions, which means that Miles used three keyboards players simultaniously in some takes. The music is much more spacey, atmospheric and further removed from the strict Jazz format, clearly pointing towards the Fusion explosion, which was to errupt on Bitches BrewFind albums with this title - the next revolutionary album. This is some of the best music ever created on this planet and absolutely essential!

MILES DAVIS ~ THE COMPLETE JACK JOHNSON SESSIONS
COLUMBIA 86359 ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1970

This is the 7th chapter in the ColumbiaFind albums on this label’s epic series of Miles DavisFind albums by this artist Box Sets, which is a monumental reissue project of recordings by the most important Jazz musician of the 20th century. Recorded between February and June 1970 this monumental document defines “Electric Jazz” – anything recorded since, be it Jazz, Rock or Fusion, has its roots here. These almost five hours of music remained mostly unreleased till this set was issued, as the original A Tribute To Jack JohnsonFind albums with this title album contained less than 10 % of the music included herein. Although a few other “cooked” albums included snippets of this music (Live-EvilFind albums with this title, Get Up With ItFind albums with this title, DirectionsFind albums with this title and Big FunFind albums with this title) they were never available in their full form. By the time this material was recorded Miles’ approach to creating music changed dramatically: he was more of a captain giving the crew a general direction as to where he wanted to go, ratter that a navigator concerned with the exact details as to the course taken. An enormous amount of freedom was granted to the stellar collection of participants (Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist, Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist, Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist – keyboards, Steve GrossmanFind albums by this artist, Bennie MaupinFind albums by this artist, Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist – saxes, Dave HollandFind albums by this artist, Ron CarterFind albums by this artist, Michael HendersonFind albums by this artist – bass, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, Sonny SharrockFind albums by this artist – guitar, Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist, Gene PerlaFind albums by this artist – drums, Airto MoreiraFind albums by this artist, Hermeto PascoalFind albums by this artist – percussion) and for the first time Miles promoted John McLaughlin to be the primary soloist, much more dominant than his trumpet. McLaughlin of course was up to the job and presents some incredible guitar playing, firmly establishing the electric guitar as the leading instrument in instrumental music for the years to come. His fearless ventures into the uncharted territory of Fusion and even Rock would become a beacon for generations of guitar players, a source of inspiration and a vital learning tool. The unrestrained, almost jam-like atmosphere of the sessions inspired all the participants to search for the best they could achieve and the resulting music is simply phenomenal. This is visionary and groundbreaking, Promethean and pioneering musical creation, an absolute must to any Jazz fan that takes his music seriously..

MILES DAVIS ~ THE COMPLETE ON THE CORNER SESSIONS
COLUMBIA 06239 (Barcode: 886970623926) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1972 - 1975 Released: 2007

This is the 8th (and apparently the last) chapter in the ColumbiaFind albums on this label’s epic series of Miles DavisFind albums by this artist Box Sets, which is a monumental reissue project of recordings by the most important Jazz musician of the 20th century. Recorded between March 1972 and May 1975 this the music includes everything Miles recorded for Columbia before his 5 years of retirement from recording due to health problems, before resuming his career in 1980. The inventory is pretty amazing: 4 years, 16 sessions, 21 musicians and over 6 hours of groundbreaking music, which although rarely given credit for it, changed to face of music for years to come. Incorporating Funk, Fusion, World Music, Rock, Soul and of course Jazz, this music re-defined the basic conceptions of the musical universe. Anything recorded later on this planed could be traced back to some extent to these sounds, be it Hip-Hop, Rock, Electronic and Ambient Music, House, and Dance, including of course contemporary Jazz and Fusion. The music is completely groove oriented, with very little (and often without) melody, with a loose and completely atmospheric jamming over a repetitive and hypnotic rhythms, created masterly by bassist Michael HendersonFind albums by this artist, continuing the direction initiated on The Cellar Door Sessions 1970Find albums with this title. Miles on trumpet, Dave LiebmanFind albums by this artist, Carlos GarnettFind albums by this artist and Bennie MaupinFind albums by this artist on saxes, Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist on keyboards, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, Reggie LucasFind albums by this artist and Pete CoseyFind albums by this artist on guitars, Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist and Al FosterFind albums by this artist on drums and quite a few other players contribute to this heavenly music, under the Master’s spiritual leadership. The music included here appeared in various edited forms on the albums: On The CornerFind albums with this title, Big FunFind albums with this title and Get Up With ItFind albums with this title, but most is heard here for the first time. It is almost impossible to describe how far out and pioneering this music is. It presents not only a completely new sound and approach to performing music, but also a new way to create music as a flow of the subconscious creative process. Over 30 years after it was recorded, it still sounds revolutionary and poignant, as it undoubtedly will continue to sound in the days to come. I can’t imagine anybody who calls himself a music lover not to own this music and listen to it periodically to recharge his or her emotional batteries. Beyond essential!

This is the 1st chapter in the ColumbiaFind albums on this label’s epic series of Miles DavisFind albums by this artist Box Sets, which is a monumental reissue project of recordings by the most important Jazz musician of the 20th century. Recorded between October 1955 and March 1961 the music includes everything Miles recorded for Columbia with his legendary first quintet and sextet. The music included here appeared on the albums: ’Round About MidnightFind albums with this title, MilestonesFind albums with this title, Kind Of BlueFind albums with this title and Someday My Prince Will ComeFind albums with this title, as well as on numerous compilation albums released later. There is little that I need to say about the music herein, as almost every Jazz lover is acquainted with at least the “Kind Of Blue” album, being the most widely sold Jazz recording of all times. The combination of the geniuses of Miles and Trane turn these sessions into a fundamental and quintessential Jazz experience, which serves as a model for all generations of Jazzman to come. Both of them were constantly on a spiritual quest to expand both their performing skills, taking them beyond the humanly possible, as well as crossing musical planes uncharted and visionary. Although created by humans, this music is worthy of Gods and should it have happened a few thousands of years earlier, it would be probably heard on the mount Olympus. MUZA 445 (Barcode: 5907783494451) ~ POLAND ~ Classic Pop

Recorded: 1967 Released: 1999

This is the most famous Polish album of all times, an extraordinary musical achievement revered all over the world in spite the fact that it is sung in Polish, which makes the lyrics accessible only to people speaking that language. The apparent power of the music crosses language barriers with its awe-inspiring intensity and expressiveness, similar to the music of Edith PiafFind albums by this artist, Jacques BrelFind albums by this artist and other famous troubadours, balladeers and chansonniers. The music, written by famous Polish composer Zygmunt KoniecznyFind albums by this artist, one of the most important composers in post WWII Poland, is absolutely marvelous, combining many different European music traditions, both of Western and Eastern European origin, providing a perfect match to the poetry, which serves as the song´s lyrics. The poetry is mostly modern, written by the country´s most talented and expressive minds, including my favorite Polish poet Julian TuwimFind albums by this artist. Outstanding Polish singer Ewa DemarczykFind albums by this artist performs these songs with such transcendent power and skill, theatrical dynamics and incredible vocal quality, that each and every one of them becomes an instant classic, all marvelous and brilliant. Combined together on one album they create a musical masterpiece rarely paralleled elsewhere, proving again that great music can be created outside of the mainstream, both musically and geographically. In the 43 years that passed since this album was recorded it lost absolutely nothing of its beauty, excellence and power and perhaps serves as yet another piece of evidence about the decadence and loss of direction we experience in music in recent times. This expanded edition of the original album includes a second CD with similar material recorded by Demarczyk four years earlier and issued as a single, which today is one of that rarest collector´s items in the Polish discography. Absolutely essential listening!

ISLAND 984992 (Barcode: 602498499283) ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock

Recorded: 1966 - 1973 Released: 2007

This lavishly and lovingly produced box set collects all existing (audio & video) BBC recordings by Folk-Rock heroin Sandy DennyFind albums by this artist, who was not only one of the most distinctive voices of the Golden Age but also a superb songwriter. This collection spans from 1966 to 1973 and covers her solo career, which was before and after her being a member of StrawbsFind albums by this artist, Fairport ConventionFind albums by this artist and FotheringayFind albums by this artist. Most of the material included here presents Sandy as “naked” as a singer can appear – just her hair-raising vocals and acoustic guitar or piano (only a few tracks include other backing musicians), which of course is for the best as she never really needed anything more. Her angelic and deeply penetrating voice and her theatrical ability to express the lyrics are so powerful that the experience is almost unparalleled. Most of the songs are her own (music & lyrics) and just a few are her arrangements of traditional folk material. The DVD includes the only footage in existence of Sandy performing. The set also includes beautiful photographs and excerpts of Sandy’s diaries. Sandy’s tragically premature death in 1978 put an end to her exquisite input to the world of music and she is sadly missed. I don’t think anything more needs to be said here – this is absolutely brilliant stuff, beyond essential for anybody who truly loves music and a must in any decent music collection.

Recorded: 1970 - 1971 Released: 2011

I guess there´s not much left to say about this iconic album, considering the oceans of words already spilled on the subject. Post CreamFind albums by this artist / Blind FaithFind albums by this artist guitarist / vocalist Eric ClaptonFind albums by this artist moved over the pond and embraced American music: Blues (which was always his primary love), Country and Rock And Roll. Playing with American musicians Clapton seemingly changed his approach from the highly improvisational, endless and incredibly loud solos he used to play with Cream, to concise, almost simplistic brief solo moments, lots of vocals and lots of melody. For some it was a "new" Clapton, but for people with keen hearing Clapton was still playing the Blues, same as he did in the YardbirdsFind albums by this artist years ago and same as he did with Cream, slightly disguised / Americanized but basically honest and consistent with his past. And then of course the presence of Duane AllmanFind albums by this artist, the legendary guitar hero of the Allman BrothersFind albums by this artist and Southern Rock in general, which turns this album into what it truly is – a conversation between two Giants, which in Rock happens only once in a blue moon. So what do we have here: nice but not sensational music, mostly Blues based, superb guitar playing, great support from a great rhythm section and a lot of Magic, which turns this into one of the greatest Rock albums of all times. Of course it could have never been repeated and even if Duane did not meet his Maker soon after, this kind of miracle happens only once, so let´s be happy with what we have. The additional CD includes some great previously unreleased material, some live / some studio, including the sessions for the second, never finished album and other goodies. Did I say essential? Hell YES!

The albums are remastered and packaged in album replicas (mini-sleeves), housed in a cardboard box, and with the price tag of a double album this is a tremendous bargain as well. Essential!

TELARC 83481 (Barcode: 089408348129) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2000 Released: 2000

This magnificent album by Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist was his 3rd release on the prestigious TelarcFind albums on this label label. It is certainly one of the highest achievements in his illustrious musical career and a masterpiece of rare beauty. Accompanied by his World Sinfonia group and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Di Meola presents a beautiful suite, which mixes jazz, fusion, Latin, Tango, Middle-Eastern and classical influences together, creating a whole new genre by itself. The music was mostly composed by Di Meola, but he includes three compositions by his Mentor Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist as part of his uninterrupted (since the early 1990s) commitment to pay tribute to his music. The orchestral arrangements are one of the most organic and suitable attempts to combine classical orchestra with a jazz ensemble ever attempted. DREAMS ~ DREAMS / IMAGINE MY SURPRISE
BGO 940 (Barcode: 5017261209405) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1970 - 1971 Released: 2010

The fantastic US Jazz-Rock ensemble DreamsFind albums by this artist, which unfortunately recorded only two albums, both included here, was one of the best examples of the American branch of Brass-Rock, a relatively short-lived sub genre of Jazz-Rock, which also included such superb ensembles like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist, ChaseFind albums by this artist and a few others. Dreams originated in NY and had a somewhat flexible lineup of associated musicians, but the importance of these two albums is mainly due to the fact that they provided a debut recording opportunity to some of the genre´s most iconic figures: brothers -Michael BreckerFind albums by this artist (saxophone) and Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist (trumpet) - and drummer Billy CobhamFind albums by this artist. Other Dreams members were already established figures on the scene, like bassist Doug LubahnFind albums by this artist (DoorsFind albums by this artist), guitarist John AbercrombieFind albums by this artist and keyboardist Don GrolnickFind albums by this artist. Other group members were keyboardist / guitarist Jeff KentFind albums by this artist, trombonist Barry RogersFind albums by this artist, vocalist Edward VernonFind albums by this artist, bassist Will LeeFind albums by this artist and guitarist / trumpeter Bob MannFind albums by this artist. Musically the group mixed genres freely, with Jazz, Funk, Rock and Soul adopted at will and beautifully arranged to create some of the most memorable sounds of the period. The music is just perfect; although spontaneous and improvised, every note is just exactly where it belongs, every drum beat precisely on time, every phrase brilliantly placed, every tempo change and every instrumental solo and above all the overall interplay are just what a music fun needs – pure genius. It is hard to believe that a bunch of young musician was capable of producing such magnificent music, but then on the other hand considering that Dreams seeded Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist, Brecker BrothersFind albums by this artist and many other heroes of the Jazz and Fusion scene, perhaps one should not wonder. I own both these albums since the day they were released and have listened to them repeatedly over the years, always enjoying myself immensely and it was me who suggested to BGOFind albums on this label to reissue them – I´m glad they did! Now many more potential listeners have the opportunity to hear them as well – enjoy as this is essential stuff!

JULIE DRISCOLL / BRIAN AUGER / TRINITY ~ STREETNOISE (DELUXE EDITION)
CASTLE 980 (Barcode: 5050159198023) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Originally released in 1969 as a double LP, this was to be the last cooperation between Julie and Brian (well not really, as they re-united for another album years later). This is undoubtedly one of the best proto-Prog releases of all times and one of the best 1960s albums. Julie`s expressive vocals are just heartbreaking and Brian`s jazzy hammond is unsurpassed. The material - a mixture of originals and covers - is very well selected and includes the unforgettable ode dedicated to the tragic Czech uprising (Czechoslovakia), which was brutally put down by invading armies of the Soviet block. Over the years this album lost absolutely nothing of its strength and beauty. Definitely an essential listen!

GEORGE DUKE ~ MY SOUL–THE COMPLETE MPS FUSION RECORDINGS(MOST PERFECT SOUND EDITION)
MPS 751504 (Barcode: 602517515048) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1971 - 1976 Released: 2008

US keyboardist George DukeFind albums by this artist is one of the most colorful and versatile figures on the Jazz-Rock Fusion scene. His career stretches ways back to the mid-1960s and lasts to this very day. Starting as a classic Jazz pianist, Duke gradually moved from straightforward Jazz into Jazz-Rock Fusion, abandoning the acoustic piano in favor of the electric one and later adding a myriad of synthesizers to his workshop. His stints with Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist, Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist (twice) and Cannonball AdderleyFind albums by this artist (where he replaced Joe ZawinulFind albums by this artist) in his formative years influenced his musical path tremendously and it was Zappa who pushed him towards using synthesizers and exploring new musical vistas. Duke’s development and gradual change of style and musical vocabulary was brilliantly captured on his recordings for the legendary German MPSFind albums on this label label. His connection with MPS was quite accidental and recording for a small European label was quite unusual for US Artists at the time, but in retrospect Duke couldn’t have made a better decision, as the label allowed him total artistic freedom, which was almost impossible to achieve on the US scene. He recorded a total of nine albums for MPS, seven of which are collected in this superb box set. His first recording for MPS dating from 1966 was still very much a classic Jazz affair, which stylistically does not belong to his Fusion period, was not included here (perhaps a correct decision as far as the title goes, but as it is still unavailable on CD, it would be nice to have it reissued as well). The last recording for MPS, a solo keyboards project, is also omitted, for contractual bullshit reasons, as it caused a big legal dispute at the time, with Duke changing labels from MPS to EpicFind albums on this label. That album was reissued as “The 1976 Solo Keyboard AlbumFind albums with this title” on the Wounded BirdFind albums on this label label (the original MPS title was “The DreamFind albums with this title”). However, the remaining seven albums (“SolusFind albums with this title” and “The Inner SourceFind albums with this title”, which were released together as a double LP, “Faces In ReflectionFind albums with this title”, “FeelFind albums with this title”, “I Love The Blues, She Heard Me CryFind albums with this title”, “The Aura Will PrevailFind albums with this title” and “Liberated FantasiesFind albums with this title”) recorded between April 1971 and January 1976 are included in their entirety, beautifully remastered. These four CDs include such an immense amount of music, which is so versatile stylistically and conceptually, that it constitutes a tremendous and essential document of the era. As far as Duke’s playing and even more importantly his compositional skills, this is a beautiful portrait of an Artist, which every fan and music lover will cherish. The players on the sessions present here constitute a long list of some of the best Jazz and Fusion musicians active at the time, too long to be included here. For the inquisitive listeners let me just mention that even Frank Zappa is present (albeit incognito) on two tracks, as are many members of his Mothers Of InventionFind albums by this artist. There is something for everyone here and overall this box set is one unadulterated, intense plateful of fun and musical ingenuity. Absolutely essential!

3rd and 4th albums by brilliant UK Blues group Aynsley Dunbar RetaliationFind albums by this artist, led by legendary drummer Aynsley DunbarFind albums by this artist and including some of the greatest musicians of the period, like Victor BroxFind albums by this artist (vocals, guitar & keyboards), Jon MorsheadFind albums by this artist (guitar), Alex DmochowskiFind albums by this artist (bass) and Tommy EyreFind albums by this artist (keyboards). Following the release of the first two albums, the group asked John MayallFind albums by this artist to produce their 3rd release and the resulting album is one of the greatest British Blues masterpieces of all times. The extraordinary vocals by Brox (deep throaty baritone), superb guitar and keyboards solos and fantastic rhythm section, combined with excellent songwriting just all come together to create a stunning album, which strangely enough us relatively unknown to most British Blues fans. Unfortunately by the time the 3rd album was released, the group was already falling apart, with Dunbar moving ahead to create his (also short-lived) "Blue WhaleFind albums with this title" project. The 4th album was a contractual commitment and was recorded partly after Dunbar left, with Brox assuming the leadership for a while. The resulting album is not as strong as its predecessor, but considering the abilities and talent of the musicians involved, it is still (in retrospect) quite good, certainly better that many other efforts recorded at the time. This is essential document of British Blues, an absolute must to any fan of the genre.

BILL EVANS ~ ALBUM (EXPANDED EDITION)
COLUMBIA 64963 (Barcode: 5099706496328) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1971 Released: 1996

The history of jazz is crowned by a small pantheon of stellar figures, which are (more or less) unequivocally accepted as the most prominent contributors to the development of the genre. Miles DavisFind albums by this artist and John ColtraneFind albums by this artist are members of that exclusive club and so is Bill EvansFind albums by this artist, the most influential jazz pianist ever. Since Evans’ biography is available from many sources, I won’t go into it here, so here are just a few personal comments: Although Evens played in a variety of settings, he surely deserves the title of inventor of the piano trio, a format in which most of his exceptional work was done. Over the years Evans led a series of legendary trios with the most eloquent bass and drums players, primarily noticeable for the phenomenal and telepathic level of interplay between the trio members. His (fortunately) numerable trio recordings are not only a document of his exceptional sensibility and lyricism as a player and composer, but also cornerstones of musical collaboration. Starting from the first trio (1959) with Scott LaFaroFind albums by this artist and Paul MotianFind albums by this artist and up to the last moments of his life (1980) with Marc JohnsonFind albums by this artist and Joe La BarberaFind albums by this artist, the trio recording have always been the safest bets on musical delight one might ever take when buying a jazz album. This particular album, recorded with legends Eddie GomezFind albums by this artist on bass and Marty MorellFind albums by this artist on drums, is very important in Evans’ history. It includes his first contributions on the electric piano (a custom-made version of the Fender Rhodes), which he will explore more extensively later in his career. It also includes exclusively his own compositions, as opposed to his treatments of jazz standards, which were earlier the bulk of his recording material. This was the first of the only two albums Evans recorded for ColumbiaFind albums on this label – the other (“Living Time”) still awaiting a proper reissue. I can’t imagine anybody who loves jazz (or in fact anybody who loves music) ignoring this album, so if you still don’t have it – now is your chance. Absolutely essential!

His superb technique, but even more importantly his exceptional feel of melody and lyrical expressionism are unmatched. His favorite format was the piano trio (piano, bass & drums) and the majority of his very extensive recorded legacy is in that format. This album is a prime example of the trio format (with Eddie GomezFind albums by this artist - bass and Elliot ZigmundFind albums by this artist - drums). An absolute must!

Following the departure of Grech (to form Blind FaithFind albums by this artist) and later King, they were replaced by bassist John WeiderFind albums by this artist and multi-instrumentalist Poli PalmerFind albums by this artist respectively. Palmer´s contributions on vibraphone, flute and piano expanded the band´s sound considerably, adding subtle Jazzy nuances to the already intricate musical amalgam the band produced. Chapman´s unique vocal qualities, which had absolutely no rivalry on the British scene, combined with the superb instrumental backing turned Family into an absolute marvel, which has stayed unchallenged for the last 40 years. The new lineup recorded the two albums included here in rapid succession, using 4 live tracks on the second album to speed up the recording process, which ultimately turned out to be the only live material ever formally released by the band. FLASH ~ FLASH
ESOTERIC 2166 (Barcode: 5013929726628) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2009

1st album by the brilliant British Prog band FlashFind albums by this artist, formed by founding member of YesFind albums by this artist, guitarist Peter BanksFind albums by this artist, after he left the band following the recording of their first two albums. The band also included another ex-Yes member keyboardist Tony KayeFind albums by this artist, lead singer Colin CarterFind albums by this artist, bassist Ray BennettFind albums by this artist and drummer Mike HoughFind albums by this artist. In many respects Flash was what Yes should have become, at least in my opinion. Banks didn´t like the change of direction Yes were following, which although brought them fame and fortune, was for many of the early fans of the band (myself included) a huge disappointment. The pomposity and pretentiousness that Yes displayed in the years to follow was often pretty sickening and Banks was able somehow to predict that. Therefore the forming of Flash was a great joy at the time, as it truly followed in the footsteps of the two first Yes albums ("YesFind albums with this title" and "Time And A WordFind albums with this title"), which to this day are my favorite albums by the band. What makes Flash such a great band? Well, it certainly had all the right ingredients, both in its personnel, as far as musicianship is concerned and musical approach, following the development of the Prog movement in the right direction. Great melodies, brilliant performances, a balance of influences ranging from Jazz to Pop, all incorporated just at the perfect measure. This album has no weak moments, no unnecessary fillings, in short no bullshit whatsoever. Everything is just perfect as far as Prog is concerned. Over the years I enjoyed listening to this album countless times, never ever being disappointed and in time it actually grew stronger on me, surely in view of the realization, that they don´t make them any more. Essential music for body and soul!

2nd album. To create a follow up to the sensational debut album is usually a very tough task for any group, but Fleetwood Mac seemed to have no problem with recording another masterpiece. With the dual lead guitar talents of Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer, who also wrote most of the music (which meant they didn`t need to play any blues standards), there was plenty of talent and enthusiasm to go around. On this album they added piano (Christine Perfect, later to be McVie, `stolen` from the rival blues group Chicken Shack) and a small horn section. This is timeless music.

FLEETWOOD MAC ~ PETER GREEN`S FLEETWOOD MAC
BLUE HORIZON 516443 ~ UK ~ Blues

1st album from 1968. Peter Green`s ride to the top of the UK blues revival of the late 60`s was swift and almost Hollywood like. When the young Jewish lad was chosen by John Mayall as a replacement for Eric `the God` Clapton as the lead guitarist for the Bluesbreakers, blues fans were all shook up. But it took just one legendary album with Mayall to kick Green to stardom. When Green left Mayall to form Fleetwood Mac with two other Bluesbreakers alumini (Mick Fleetwood - drums and John McVie - bass), the expectations were extremely high. Fleetwood chose to record for the Blue Horizon label owned by legendary blues producer Mike Vernon. The debut album recorded in late 1967 was released in 1968 to overwhelming applause from the blues community and has been considered a classic ever since. Essential!

ISLAND 5306090 (Barcode: 600753060902) ~ UK ~ Blues-Rock

By the time FreeFind albums by this artist were recording their 3rd album the combined talents of singer Paul RodgersFind albums by this artist, guitarist Paul KossoffFind albums by this artist, bassist Andy FraserFind albums by this artist and drummer Simon KirkeFind albums by this artist, aided by the experience of grueling touring and fast-rising popularity with the crowds inspired the group to take the crucial decision to produce the new album by themselves. In retrospect this was probably the factor which turned Free from just another white Blues band into Blues-Rock Superstars. Fraser & Rodgers, who were in charge of writing the bulk of the band’s material, took their writing just a tiny notch away from the Blues roots towards Rock, apparently just the right step which made their popularity explode overnight. With the “All Right Now” single charting (soon to achieve a permanent seat on Rock’s Pantheon of evergreens) and constant demand for live gigs, the band was riding the wave of success, which in a very short time will lead to their ultimate destruction (as it did to almost every other band eventually). But right at that time they definitely were at their peak, producing a classic album, which will be never rivaled by any other group in that genre. The secret of this album’s greatness lies with the simplicity and “less is more” approach. Having written some great melodies the band did nothing to muddle the raw material and executed it perfectly, using some great riffs. Fraser’s bass lines are pure genius, pointing the music in the right direction, Kirke’s guitar licks create just the perfect fillers, avoiding lengthy solos which did not fit the bill here and Rodgers’ soulful vocals and his unparalleled understanding of the Blues place him immediately on the top of his class. This Deluxe Edition is a tribute to this outstanding album. Out of the 30 tracks (on 2 CDs) only the first 7 come from the original album, the rest being a plethora of studio, radio and live recordings, some previously unreleased. There is a lot of repetition here with 8 versions of “All Right Now” and 7 versions of “Fire And Water”, but they are all quite different and shed a lot of light on the band’s creative process. This album, combined with the ForeverFind albums with this title DVD, which spans the same time period, is a great document of the era, when music was the epicenter of Western Culture, lamentably long time gone. Essential to all Free fans of all ages, even if they already own the original album.

MICHAEL GARRICK ~ BIG BAND HARRIOTT
JAZZ ACADEMY 10 (Barcode: 5036098005080) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2004 Released: 2004

Jamaican by birth, British saxophonist / composer Joe HarriottFind albums by this artist was one of the brightest stars of early European modern Jazz scene. Harriott moved to Britain in 1951 and soon became one of the most prominent saxophone players in the country. Initially a Bebop player, Harriott soon moved away from the traditional approach to Jazz and started experimenting with Free Form Jazz, being one of the pioneers of Free Jazz in Europe. Tragically and prematurely dead at the age of 44 (in 1973), Harriott’s immense contribution to British and worldwide Jazz was sadly recognized only many years after his passing. He recorded relatively few solo albums, but each of those is a true masterpiece. In the mid-1960s he was a member of British pianist / composer Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist’s superb quintet, recording several groundbreaking albums with him. He was also a great pioneer of the World-Jazz Fusion and a co-founder of the Indo-Jazz ensemble with violinist / composer John MayerFind albums by this artist. Harriott was not only a great musician, but also a very insightful, open-minded individual. He was resentful for the disregard towards European (or rather any non-US) Jazz by American critics and music lovers, which the following quote clearly demonstrates: “I would like to see Jazz grow and absorb all other idioms and not be treated as if it were an isolated Art Form… I also have a pet hate that one couldn’t think for oneself unless one emigrated to a place like the United States.” On his gravestone the following epitaph is engraved: “Parker? There’s them over here can play a few aces too…” Michael Garrick of course never forgot neither Harriott nor his exquisite music. This album is a greatest homage one musician can pay to another – revitalize his music and bring it again to the attention of those, who might have never heard it. Garrick says about this album in his liner notes: “This is not so much Joe Harriott revisited as Joe Harriott reborn, re-embodied into a broader dimension.” The album includes twelve Harriott compositions, lovingly scored and arranged by Garrick for a Jazz Big Band, which includes some of the best Jazz players in the British Isles, including veteran drummers Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist and John MarshallFind albums by this artist. The last track is a special requiem composed by Garrick in Harriott’s memory. Harriott’s brilliant music indeed sounds reborn here and although transformed, it retains the free spirit originally intended by the composer. A brilliant and essential album!

MICHAEL GARRICK ~ COLD MOUNTAIN
VOCALION 8415 (Barcode: 765387841522) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1972 Released: 2006

Pianist / composer Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist has been an icon of British Jazz for the last five decades. His exquisite touch on the keyboards, deep lyricism and unparalleled inventiveness as a composer characterize his entire legacy over time, which has very little rivalry or precedence. This album presents Garrick in the most intimate (and my favorite) Jazz format – the piano trio – with Dave GreenFind albums by this artist on bass and Trevor TomkinsFind albums by this artist on drums. Garrick, as usual, wrote all the music, which is sublime from start to finish. His playing is also absolutely marvelous, full of lyricism and humorous spark, virtuosity and inspiration. The rhythm section provides solid and sympathetic support at all times, and overall this is one of my favorite piano trio recordings ever. Garrick manages to concentrate his enormous abilities as a player and composer on this album, which was recorded at a peak of his 1970s activity (the album Home Stretch BluesFind albums with this title was recorded at the same session). There is nothing more that needs to be said here except that if you don’t own this album, you have a huge gap in your musical education. Essential!

MICHAEL GARRICK ~ PROMISES
VOCALION 8440 (Barcode: 765387844028) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1965 Released: 2008

Following the release of “October WomanFind albums with this title”, British pianist / composer Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist and his quintet were asked to record a new album soon after. Unfortunately the original quintet member, trumpeter Shake KeaneFind albums by this artist, left UK to join the Kurt EdelhagenFind albums by this artist’s radio Big Band in Germany – one of the best Jazz Orchestras on the continent – where he was to stay for the next four years. Garrick swiftly recruited a replacement, turning to his “half boss” (in the Don RendellFind albums by this artist / Ian CarrFind albums by this artist quintet) trumpeter Ian Carr to step into Keane’s shoes with a few days notice just before the recording. Since his writing was becoming more complex and elaborate, Garrick also expanded his quintet into a sextet with the addition of saxophonist / clarinetist Tony CoeFind albums by this artist. Legendary saxophonist Joe HarriottFind albums by this artist, bassist Coleridge GoodeFind albums by this artist and drummer Colin BarnesFind albums by this artist, the original quintet members, completed the lineup. The album includes all original music, composed by Garrick, with the exception of one arrangement of a George GershwinFind albums by this artist tune. Of the 10 tracks present, 7 are played by the sextet and 3 by a piano trio, where bassist Dave GreenFind albums by this artist replaces Goode. The music is absolutely marvelous, with Garrick’s writing reaching maturity and self-confidence. The performances are stellar, with Harriott playing perhaps more beautifully than on any other album. The entire album is complete uninterrupted musical bliss from start to finish and a remarkable example of early European Jazz of the highest quality. Even the most dedicated Garrick followers will have to admit that this is definitely one of his best achievements, a magic moment captured for posterity for us to enjoy and revere. Essential stuff!

VIRGIN 5099951968328 (Barcode: 5099951968328) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1970 - 1975 Released: 2008

This monster box set brings back to life the bulk of early recordings by the British band GenesisFind albums by this artist, which is of course synonymous with Progressive Rock genre and includes their 2nd to 6th albums: "TrespassFind albums with this title", "Nursery CrymeFind albums with this title", "FoxtrotFind albums with this title", "Selling England By The PoundFind albums with this title" and "The Lamb Lies Down On BroadwayFind albums with this title". Once the Genesis lineup stabilized (starting with the 3rd album) the band produced a remarkable body of music, which now, almost four decades later, still consists of the defining elements of the genre. Even if Genesis were not truly groundbreaking or innovative, and considering some extravagancies and annoying aspects of over the top theatrics by the band´s lead singer Peter GabrielFind albums by this artist, this music lost nothing of its remarkable quality and majestic aura. There is no point going into the detailed description of the music or its historic importance as a row model for countless musicians the world over, suffice to say that this is an essential piece of musical history, which deserves to be preserved for future generations, which this box set attempts to do. It includes 7 CDs and 6 DVDs: The original five albums are presented on 6 CDs (the last album was a double LP and is a double CD), remastered and remixed from the original studio tapes. The 7th CD includes bonus tracks recorded during this period, both studio and live, which is a holy grail for any Genesis fan. All CDs are hybrid CD / SACD format. The 6 DVDs present the albums in the advanced 5.1 surround sound mix and a plethora of video material captured during this period and recent interviews with the band members. Exquisitely packaged in a luxurious box (same format as the other 2 box sets with their later recordings), this limited edition is sure to disappear from the market in matter of weeks, same as the previous box sets. Need I say essential?

GENTLE GIANT ~ FREE HAND (35TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION)
DRT 00350 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

7th album (recorded 1975), it ranks among the best achievments by this group and certainly is the group`s last perfect album. The steady quintet line-up, performing extensively over the period of 2 years, gives them a new dimention of perfection and interplay which reaches its peak on this recording. The compositions are brilliant, as always, and the album sounds today as fresh as it did upon its release. Exceptional and essential music.
